I've never thought about this before but actually I think we should be encouraging people to use "I rest my case", provided that they understand what it means is "I have nothing further to submit"... or in other words, "I will now shut up about this subject immediately."

Kids' iPad (which gets a ton of daily use, naturally) fell off the couch on to carpet, in an OtterBox. Screen is dead. You can still hear audio from notifications or whatever else but the screen just won't go. I tried all the recommended repair functions, full restore through iTunes, everything, but it's gone. Sigh. At least I got my $300 of Danielle Smith-bux yesterday. Easy come, easy go.

Example:
OP: “I’ve noticed people eating more cheeseburgers, and I think people who eat cheeseburgers are actually Hitler youth.”
Response: “Cheeseburgers are usually pretty affordable so it probably has more to do with inflation and the expanse of lower income people than it does a sudden rise in Hitler youth.”
OP: “I rest my case.”

Lionel Hutz: "And with that your honor, I rest my case."
Judge: "You rest your case?"
LH: What!? No, I mean, I just thought that was a figure of speech! Uh, I mean, case; closed.

The 'Definition of Insanity' thing is one I find pretty funny on a lot of levels.
First of all, by attributing that quote to...whoever, call it Marcus Aurelius if you want, is an 'appeal to authority' fallacy in order to usually, attempt to cement a point that is shaky on its own.
Secondly, doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result on the face of it is pretty stupid.
Case in point <-see what I did there?? Ha! Anyhow, Glen Gulutzan. Just same thing over and over and over again in the faith, not reason but 'faith,' that it would eventually work.
Narrator: "It didnt."
However, the same concept essentially relies on the belief that all externalities and contributing factors remain static, the 'ceteris paribus' fallacy of the belief that if one variable changes all others will remain the same.
Which is a special kind insanity all of its own.
In reality one could attempt something over and over again and reasonably anticipate a different result if external factors relating to the scenario have changed in a manner to make a different result more likely.
However, by the same token just getting a 'different result' does not necessarily indicate that the result would be 'success.'
It could just as easily induce the endeavour to fail even harder. Nobody says that all changes in variables are positive and would optimize scenarios.

Well, it's called practice. You do the same thing over and over and you get better at it.
The "definition of insanity" that people quote is the dumbest thing I've heard, and incredibly annoying.

We’re not talking about the game, we’re talking about practice?
Edit: I rest my case.

We were away for three months. Our house sitter was supposed to start our cars every couple of weeks. It got bitterly cold and she didn’t start the cars and the batteries died and froze. Now I have to replace two batteries for $400.

I cringe every time I here "You know what the definition is?" I pray it's a joke and there will be a funny one liner to follow but it never happens.

To be fair starting them without actually driving them and getting them up to temp is going to do more harm than good anyway.
I always suggest taking batteries inside if I'm leaving for an extended period in the winter

This, starting them briefly only drains them further, you'd have to let it sit idling to charge back up via the alternator. Next time just put tenders on them.

a while ago, one of the topics discussed on cp was a car battery booster (used to jump start a vehicle with a dead battery). a few pm's with DoubleF and i was all hooked up on amazon and waited until black friday and ordered a couple for my wife's and my vehicles.
i know it's a kind of lame present, but i saved it for christmas since i had no clue what to get my wife (we've been married 20+ years). once i explained what it was she was actually really happy with it (yea for me! ha! ha!)
fast forward to today.... i get a call from her "my car won't start"
my immediate response was "awesome! you can try the battery jumper i got you for christmas!"
wife "ummmmmm"
me "it's super easy to use! i put the instructions in the storage container with the jumper... you connect the jumper cables to the one end of the jumper, hit a button and you should be good to go to jump the car!"
wife... nothing but crickets
me "hello?"
wife "the jumper isn't in the car"
me "yes it is, i put it in the back of your car on boxing day"
wife "i took it out of my car this past friday and put it in the house"
me "what? why?"
i don't even know what her excuse/reason for removing it from her car was, all i knew was that i had to leave work early to get her car going so she could take our daughter to dance.
oh.... and when i got home i found her battery jumper and left it right in the center of the front entrance so she'd feel shame as she opened the front door! ha! ha!
needless to say - it's back in her car!

a little update....
we got my wife a new battery and installed it yesterday. this morning she drops the kids off at school and since it's a day off for her she heads into town to do a few errands. after her first stop she texts me - my car won't start. ugh. she sends me a little video of her gauges being wonky. a quick google search says that's a result of a low powered battery - weird... maybe the new battery is a dud??
no problem - she has the booster.... but then i learn "i took it out becuz i had a brand new battery and it should be fine". ok... now i'm choked... and she knew it!
she opted to call a tow truck instead of having me leave work AGAIN. the tow truck driver gets to her, sees the wonky gauges, pulls out a battery booster and whammo - her car starts. that was $100. the battery booster sitting in our house... $105. yea - i'm sooo not impressed.
she went and got her new battery checked and sure enough - it's a dud... so now we're onto another battery... but the booster is finally back in her car!

Hahaha! I mean, this is pretty funny. You know what's coming next...
"I took it out of the car, because there's no way I'd get another dud battery!"
