However, I really like it for the Islanders. Barzal has had too much weight to carry, and adding Horvat as a #2 down the middle, could really free up Barzal and have a huge impact on the Isles overall.
They might play Barzal on the wing with Horvat on a #1 line.

We'll see - they aren't that far out:

7) PIT +8
8) BUF +7
9) WAS +6
10) NYI +3

Not hard for the Islanders to catch that +7/+8 level, and if any of those teams cool off (someone always does)...

Maybe - which also removes some responsibilities from him

It's just the amount of teams they have to climb over, and the top end personnel on Pittsburgh and Washington are better than what NYI has, even with Horvat. Probably comes down to goaltending and there I don't see much advantage among any of them.

Seems like they are in the exact same position as the Flames, unlikely to make the playoffs but still in the mix. They are three points back of the Capitals but they win the tiebreaker. Flames are 3 points back of the Oilers but the Oilers win the tiebreaker. There are a couple other teams that the Flames could catch, unlike the Isles but the Isles have the benefit of winning the tiebreaker against Pittsburgh and Washington. Should be an interesting finish. Sorokin gives them a chance to go on a heater, having a stud goalie is a positive for them compared to teams like the Pens and the Sabres.

There's also the point that although they've been bad this year, the Panthers at 1 point back and equal GP are actually a much better hockey team than the Islanders and the smart money would be bet on the Isles finishing behind them.

I think Jarry is as good as Sorokin.

But the teams above the Flames are more iffy to maintain. The Kraken may well fade a lot. The Kings could too. Vegas will go as far as Logan Thompson can carry them. And the Oilers are no good. Moneypuck still has Calgary at 83% to make it (above LA, Vegas, and the Avs). NYI at 12%.

Yeah, I was including Fla in my consideration as a team NYI has to beat in that cluster.

Islanders definitely aren't done adding just to push them into the playoffs. Not a great strategy for longevity, or ever becoming a contender but for some reason they'd rather be a wild card team.

Wouldn't that just result in them giving up the ~16th overall pick for the privilege of being stomped in the first round by the Bruins?

The thing with the Islanders is that they have Ilya Sorokin. He's good enough to potentially go on an insane run en route to the finals.

When you have an elite goalie, sometimes all you need is to barely make the playoffs.

You can argue that this is what led to the Flames delusional/mediocre endeavors from 2008 to 2014.
But present-day Sorokin (92.3% in a league with an average around 90.6%) is a lot better than post 2007 Kiprusoff (91.0% in a league with an average of around 91.3%).

It's not like the Oilers are in the last spot. come on now the Flames have far more teams they can pass and aren't giving up games to everyone

This. The difference is Sorokin. That is why the Isles are OK with just barely making the playoffs.

That appears to be what they want.

A day later and I am still okay with the deal. The pick is either a solid upper mid 1st round pick in a super deep draft or, possibly, a flyer for a higher pick the following year. Every other team in on this was going to offer a later first round pick and the other parts were going to be about equal (middle 6 young winger and a top prospect). Unless it turns out Shane Wright was actually on the table this was the right deal, even if it feels underwhelming.

Yeah but that just goes to show how bad the team is when their goaltender is all-world and they are a .500 team. They are on the exact same pace as last season but at least last season they had the excuse of starting the season on that brutal road trip. It certainly looks like Trotz wasn't the issue and the team just isn't that good.

Keep in mind their division is ridiculously strong, easy to look like a .500 team in that division but still be a good team.

I don’t think there is any doubt of that.

Brazal with less responsibility will start scoring more.
