He'd also provide some flexibility to deal Hanifin for a nice package at the 2024 trade deadline without impacting the defense if it becomes clear that Hanifin doesn't want to re-sign

Fair enough, I could be way low and maybe I dont watch Arizona enough and could be worth that and more. But the injury issues where he can never play a full season. And we're just not even sure where we are picking this season and from most acounts a #15-20 pick this season is like a 7-10 most other seasons and the prospect cupboards are already bare.
We better make sure that is the player that would make this team an absolute contender and has a good chance of staying healthy before we fork out this years 1st ++.

Agree. Although Kylington + Tanev is some kind of pairing where the sum is greater than the parts. The two of them conjures up memories of a tearful scene from Jerry Mcguire.

Tanev tends to make his partners better. Gio and Kylington for sure.
Kylington is top 4 with Tanev. With, say Weegar or Zadorov? Who knows.

Exactly. I would go into playoffs with Weegar and Z as the “bottom pairing” any day. Unreal set of 6 defenders for playoff grind.

I think Tanev MADE Kylington. Not sure if OK is a legit top-4 or not.

Nah, that's wrong from watching Kylington closely. Tanev really helped him become a better player statistically as he allowed him to flourish in terms of offensive puck carrying (which this team sucks so badly at). But Kylington was still an offensive, play driving D-man that was really finding his NHL game last season. He looked better with Tanev (as most D-men do) but he's a great, up and coming NHL talent. Tanev aided, he didn't make.
He's exactly what this team needs right now.

Unlikely Kylington can just step in and be as good as his best ever season after 8 months off

OK wasn't perfect defensively either, but he brought speed and transition
a skilled puck carrier with blazing speed would bring a lot of good to this team's overall game right now. in fact, that may be the precise missing ingredient right now (aside from our players shooting at league average)

Sorry, that wasn't my point with that post, I was just replying directly to the comment above that suggested he was only good because of Tanev. He'll need major conditioning when he comes back to get back to where we has.

I should clarify my earlier Kylington comment- I meant that more from a Sutter perspective. I've always liked, and even defended OK's game, but I wonder if Sutter would've given him the shot if it weren't for Tanev. Tanev did for Kylington what he did for Hughes in Vancouver- he helped erase their shortcomings, giving them more freedom to do their thing.

More like they complemented one another. Tanev is great at shot suppression and positioning, but not as good at exiting the defensive zone with possession, at getting back to break up an odd man rush, or at generating scoring chances in the offensive zone. Kylington is good at those things, all of which are greatly lacking on the Flames' current D corps. We have a great deal of difficulty exiting the D zone with possession, the high D never gets back in time to help out with odd man rushes (resulting in a much higher percentage of those opportunities scoring and hence a low SV%), and the only contribution the D are making to generating scoring chances is to make shots from the point (although a few have been sneaking into the slot as late trailers in the past few games). Our D corps are just as different without Kylington as they are without Tanev, just in another way.

I’m aware of each of their skillsets, but you are underselling Tanev a bit. He makes as good a first pass as anyone, is good with the puck, and put up almost 30 points last year. Nobody can tell me that Tanev wasn’t the perfect partner for OK last year, and that he would have looked as good with anyone else. Ask Quinn Hughes what Tanev did for hin.
If Kylington were to return, I highly doubt it would be Weegar playing with Z on the third pair, it will probably be Kylington-especially considering how effective the Tanev/ Weegar pairing has been. They quietly have some of the best metrics in the league.

All the Chychrun talk is perplexing, signed to a nice contract till 2025, has lots of talent on both sides of the puck and teammates love him.
Injury issues the last couple of years but why would Arizona want to trade him? has he asked for a trade?

I said he was top 4 with Tanev and not otherwise. He’s not a top 4 guy on his own, though he’s (when in shape) better than any 6 right now.
I think people are forgetting exactly why he missed time in the past. He was manhandled in the D zone. And offensively he can skate but it’s not like he was putting up huge points.

Yeah but when you have high expectations for Hanifin, you end up disappointed
The top form Kylington is just as good as the average Hanifin.
The top form Hanifin maybe at another level but we rarely see that

Hanfin is under appreciated. Guys a workhorse. And still of good age. Flames have nothing in the system remotely close to his level.

Think id shoot for Tanner Jeannot instead. He plays a power forward game, is cheaper salarywise. Having a bit of a down year this year but would be less of a gamble than Anderson who's older. If the Preds would even let him go that is.
