New York could have signed Horvat for free in a few months if they wanted to. That's a lot to bet on a 20% chance to make the playoffs (via 538,) and then what? A waste of eight days against Boston?
|
That is not a lot to not have to negotiate against a bunch of other teams in UFA. The Islanders will throw a boatload of cash at him and he will sign there. So it is really locking down a #1 C just hitting his prime plus a chance to make a run at some playoff revenue. For a mid 1st and two meh players that is pretty damn good.

They'll still throw a boatload of cash at him after he can hear other offers. If I was Horvat, I'd want to hear them.

They don't, which is why it's insane some Canucks fans expected a Bowen Byram esque player.

I do wonder what Demko would get in a trade

Zary and Pelletier are 2 years older. Huge difference.

The Islanders obviously want Horvat to centre Brazal.
Should be a great match.

20 year old Pelletier scored 62 points in 66 games his AHL rookie year. Definitely better than what Räty has produced so far in the A. But AHL numbers don’t always tell the whole story so we’ll see if he can develop into a top 6 forward in the NHL.

Players with size typically take longer than players that play a speed game. Doesn’t mean he is better than Pelletier but got to give him a bit more time

Why would he risk that though? With the cap being what it is he might get less. We have seen that play out before.

Well that isn't true at all, the NHL is full of players that made an impact right away that have size.

What's the risk? New York willing to overpay on June 30 and then rescinding the offer on July 1, then nobody else willing to overpay?
It's possible, but unlikely. You're 28 and going to cash in for the only time in your life; at least listen to some offers and don't get your mind blown by the first one you see.

It doesn’t matter what anyone tries to project Raty at. The truth is he’s a Canuck now and therefore no good.

It’s nice to see things come full circle. Lou traded the pick that became Horvat for Cory Schneider, now maybe they can play together.

Again, he is 19 playing in the AHL.
At that age, Pelletier was still in junior.

Imagine tying your team to Miller and then having to trade Horvat or lest him walk.

FWiW, I'd have traded both of them.

Man, how did Miller become so cancerous so quickly
or was this happening for a while under the radar
his current contract looked pretty appealing last summer

A 'mid-round first' like it's nothing. That's Backlund, Coronato, Pelletier, Larkin, Chychrun, Alex Tuch, Zadorov, Pulock, etc. etc.
And this draft is supposed to be deep. You've got a heck of a chance to pick up a good player for years, in exchange for 30 games of Bo Horvat. And they can still do whatever they want with the two players they got.
