Even if they re-sign Horvat the future doesn't look that great for Islanders.
By the time next season starts:
Anders Lee: 33 - $7.0M
Brock Nelson: 32 - $6.0M
Josh Bailey: 34 - $5.0M
JG Pageau: 31 - $5.0M
Kyle Palmieri: 32 - $5.0M
So they already have 5 forwards over 31 that are locked up to $28M. Horvat will be 28 years old and will probably require at least $8M to re-sign. IMO it may take more because what incentive does he have to re-sign with the Islanders before UFA unless it's an overpayment.
So you'd have at least $36M tied up into 6 forwards that are 28 years or older - not sure that is a recipe for success.
And now also no 1st round picks in 2020, 2021, 2022, or 2023. They had no second round pick in 2020, and traded their second rounder in 2021. People complain about Treliving trading picks - look at Lou.

For me its, are they good enough to make this deal? If he re-signs is not an automatic win if the contract is not a good one. Horvat career year going into this year is 61 points. What he gets will matter as they aren't a top team so giving up that many assets is a risk and then overpaying to keeps is a risk.
Walks and getting overpaid hurt the Isles. If the contract is reasonable, then they did very well as he is a very good player.

They also gave Barzal $9.15 mil. I'm not convinced that Horvat gets that much less? Maybe more? He is a 2-way center who is having a 90-point season. I'm thinking 9+ not 8+.

Maybe the Isles view the next month as a negotiating window.
I he won’t resign, they flip him at the deadline (hello Seattle).
Doubt they would get the same value, but stranger things have happened…

Canucks did okay for a rental.
They received a young productive third liner, a solid prospect and a 1st. Can't really expect much more.

That should strike fear in our hearts if Sutter comes anywhere near the GM chair again.
Pray for us world.

They fall out of it they could flip him and retain salary (Canucks have less cap space) and get more. But I don't think this is why they did the deal.

I doubt they’d get more than the gave. Downgrade on the 1st for sure and Raty is a decent prospect.

Seems like a really good price for Horvat, but I really don't understand why a team like the Islanders would do it

Horvat was so close to being able to afford a down payment on a house in Vancouver, then he gets shipped off to New York. Thoughts and prayers.

Isles must have a deal in place to sign Horvat, otherwise this is bad for them.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

It’s a good deal for Vancouver.
Worsens their team, and the 1st can become unprotected if the Isles do better this season. If not, then they get an unprotected 1st that could become a lottery pick. The only person keeping the Isles from losing more games is Sorokin.

Personally, I think this is a great deal for Van.
-I think Raty has top six potential
-I think Beauvillier is one of the more underrated wingers in the game. He is a burner who shows up in big games. I wouldn’t be surprised if he sees a major bump outside the Isles system.
-first has likelihood to be a mid round pick

I'm with Scorp on this one. Raty has great upside. He really stood out in the world juniors. Good size, good skating, good puck skills. Vancouver got pretty good value IMO.
