I think that deal could have been had in the last offseason, we have to add a lot now. The other thing, Hanifin is highly overrated here…. He isn’t worth as much as everyone thinks

I never understood the fascination with Josh Anderson. Good, but not great production and unreliable due to injury.
It cost us a 1st rounder get Montreal to take a similar, but better player, with an expiring contract. If Montreal wants to trade Anderson, they should be adding a sweetener to any team willing to take on the contract.

I've been more than impressed with Pelletiers usage and his ability to fit in. I have little doubt that Coronato can do it better and sooner.
Next season can't come soon enough because if the Flames play this right, Coronato will join for the final push this year, and then next year we have a whole platoon of youth coming in adding some of that hutzpah a lot of us would like to see with an injection of youth.
I'd wager we will have all of the big 4 prospects on the main roster next year, Pelts, Coronato, Zary and Wolf. Wolf bouncing back and forth.
IMO, if Tree is making moves, he's going after another RFA RHS fw. And then a d prospect or two.
In fact I bet the Flames draft heavy on D in this draft.
|
Agree with a lot of this. I would be a bit surprised though of Wolf is a regular next year. Certainly, he gets the call if there are injuries and he may get a spot start if the flames are well in, or out, of the playoffs at years end but I think he’s got another year or two of near full time AHL duty.
Could also see Zary spend most of next season with the Wranglers. Coronato is interesting. Do the Flames sign him as early as the end of the NCAA playoffs and get him in a game this season to burn an ELC year? Does he even want to sign??
I think Pelletier is full time next year and possibly Coronato. Zary and Wolf the year after

The only thing I look forward to next season is Lucic won't be on the team.

There are lots of reports out there that they have turned down a first with no retention so it's tough to say.

The cap situation next year will likely accelerate Zarys call up. Same with Coronato. Flames are going to need cheap cheap cheap skill to ice something competitive.
That is of course unless Tree or whoever decides to make some sacrifices.

Well, I don’t think we know what the cap will be next year. Sounds like it may only go up by a million once more but even if that is the case I would be a bit surprised to see the Flames enter next year with four core pieces headed towards UFA status (Toffoli, Backlund, Hanifin, Lindholm). I think it’s likely one or two are on the move this offseason. So the cap crunch may not be as sever as it looks like it might be right now.
Pelletier seems like he should be there as a regular next year and Coronato has leverage. Zary and Wolf may have to wait. Especially Wolf.

This Flames team should not be buyers. The only way they should trade for a player is if its a good, young, cost-controlled player. Don't give up futures for a team that doesn't have a bright future.

Seravalli says he thinks Luke Schenn will go to the Flames. I could easily see that too.

With his low cap hit , I think a bunch of teams will be vying for him. Won’t be surprised if he gets a 3rd round pick in return.

The problem with trading top-4 D like Hanifin is that there's no Phillips/Pelletier types on D in the AHL waiting for a chance to replace them.
With no Hanifin, it's 3 of Stone, DeSimone, Mackey, Gilbert, and one of them is playing top-4.
Does Kuznetsov still project to be an NHLer? 5 or 6 at the NHL level?

From an article in The Athletic today. Q&A with Brad Treliving where he's asked about the deadline and the team's position. (Emphasis is mine)
"Well, it certainly plays a role. If you’re a team that’s in the playoffs, and solidly in the playoffs, you’re looking to add. If you’re not, you probably aren’t. You can’t ignore where you’re at, right?
As I’ve said before, especially lately — I don’t even know what lately is — the last number of years, the trade deadline has become such a rental market. A lot of times, people don’t have a lot of space and all the rest. This year, we’ve got some space. But you certainly have to take stock of where your team’s at."
If you have a subscription I strongly suggest reading the entire, albeit brief, interview. The tone is interesting but I may be reading too much into it. Especially the portion related to his own contract.

Maybe the Flames with some cap space can help broker a couple deals for team in the East and collect a couple extra picks if they're still on the fringe.

Why do I get the feeling the team that wins the Luke Schenn sweepstakes will come out as the loser of the trade?

I read that and think he's adding.
He'll add someone who will stay with the team though, not a rental.
