^^ $9M qualifying offer (for Meier) kills any chance of it not being a rental. And paying out the nose for that rental isn't worth it for this team.

Is there any actual confirmation of these wild and oddly specific speculations from that poster? No clue who they are if they’re some trusted source already.

Only way it makes sense is if the Flames know they can re-sign him for less than his QO. But of course that raises cap issues for next year. I'd certainly take a Meier over Mangiapane. But how realistic is that? Not very.

If he would agree to a less than 9M deal in Calgary you do it and figure out the cap...big if

I guess I should have said "at or near" his QO. Less than $9M seems unlikely.

I really don't think I want the team at this point try and add pieces for a run at the deadline. Reevaluate in the off season, the GM situation will/should be sorted and go from there. I'm hopeful that Huberdeau has a massive bounce back year next season. It just really sucks that it seems like this year is a wash.
(god I hope i'm wrong and we can make fun of this post later on)

If you add Meier and Mangiapane is one of the key pieces, it might work. Even if Meier is making $9 mil, Mangiapane is really not playing like he is worth $5.8 mil either. So, you are trading a player that currently is not playing up to his contract which hurts less if Meier is not worth his next contract either.
Problem for next year is your 100% will need to move out a Backlund, Toffoli or Tanev/Hanifin. What prospects are gone with Mangiapane is the concerning part. Guess we could always bring back Lewis and Ricthie.
If Coronato is the other key piece, then I'd consider it. Zary and Pelletier will be needed next year and maybe even this year.

He probably wouldn't be signing with us after a season like this - leaving the team with 3 superstars bailing on the organization in 2 years. The team/organization couldn't do that.
So we'd either be trading him at the deadline, or losing him for nothing...and the Flames weren't rebuilding after Florida put their offer on the table. Maybe they should have, but they weren't...so, this it.
I still think Huberdeau is an elite player. He's just here...on this team, with this structure and it's not working. That's a Flames problem.

Would a Sutter approved gm be welcomed. Not a yes man but a proven gm that can work with Sutter.Maybe a Dean Lombardi type?

It's looking like a possibility unless Darryl really wants to get back into the GM chair. He stepped down in 2006 after feeling that it was as far as he could take them as a coach. He may get the same vibes at the end of this season the way the team is playing for him.

In an alternate universe Tre is receiving some lovely offers for him now.

If this team selects a GM based off whom Darryl deems as acceptable then we are in a far worse spot than I could have ever imagined.

If Sutter does become GM, the thing that would get me excited would be if Iggy became our Head Coach like St. Louis in Montreal.
Sutter oversees the rebuild, Iginla puts the happy face on a few dark years while building the culture.

Would not mind a trade for a good player where we give up assets, but do not touch Wolf

IIRC, sec has shared valid information/rumors in the past and shared their source(s) with a mod.

If you can re-sign him, it's not.
The chances you get a player nearly as good as him in the 20s is slim.
|
Slim, but this year offers the best of the slim chances.
I also don't think he's resigning here. So to answer the main thrust, I see it as maximizing value for the asset.

The team really needs a Dman. The more Stone plays the slower he seems. And Mackey was looking like a disaster again last night. Hopefully Pelletier can keep it up because that might take the heat off paying for forward help.

If Markstrom does want to move on, he better start playing better, or there won't be any takers.
I could see it though. One of the reasons he left Vancouver was because he wanted to go somewhere where he was the undisputed #1, and with Demko coming up at the time, it looked like he was going to have to share to goal more. Maybe he is seeing the same thing with Vladar pushing this year and Wolf coming down the line.
