Yeah, I sometimes do that depending where I am. However when in Calgary or Banff, I’m usually served at a table, with a tab running, and the tip is at the end of the night or at the end of a servers shift.

In the Ireland and the UK, you usually go to the bar to order your drink and pay as you go. The bars are often busy, so for the first drink order, it is an opportunity to enhance service for later visits to the bar, by ‘buying’ the server a drink. Whether they ring in the drink or treat it as a tip, that’s up to them.

Our pub ran a system where we each had our own glasses where we’d put a bottle cap in our glass whenever one was bought and remove a cap when we consumed a drink.

I never said your experience was wrong. But it is vastly different. I’ve never had anyone be snarky, say they don’t have the time, nor have they reckoned I’m hitting on her or him.

Really? When I worked in a pub there I'd be lucky to get a pound total tips in a night. I don't even remember getting a drink bought for me.

Yep, there isn’t that culture here. Which is why when people do that, they’re noticed and likely to get better service. However, the UK government seemed to think barstaff got loads of tips, to the extent our tax codes were altered so we paid tax on lower earnings than everyone else. We’d have to write to the local tax office with evidence from our employer that they didn’t permit tips that we weren’t getting anyways to get our tax codes changed back.

That said, tipping culture is growing here.

I think your premise is pretty misguided.
Jobs performed by POCs and Immigrants. It’s about control. If you paid a fair wage we couldn’t make people dance for us.

I think if you look at the jobs and roles that were tipped rather than salary they are performed by women and POCs.

I don’t believe that any profession dominated by White Males relies on tips as part of income. I could be wrong though

Ouch. On LTD, and I was officially terminated from my position today (as opposed to the other two times in the last four years when I was merely terminated?) But this time I've lost my health and dental after Jan 31

That hurts. Non-group coverage is completely inadequate for what I need (I already have a non-group blue cross). Can't imagine there's any way i'd pass a medical for any of the decent plans. The plan Manulife says I can flip on to with no medical isn't much different than my AB blue cross

Out of pocket medical expenses I filed last year tax time were something between $4000-4500.

Ouch

The system is so dumb, in that you can see a doctor for free and find out what the problem is, but might not be able to afford the medication to correct it.

Also Japan used an insane amount of plastic wrap and bagging. Which was another gear grinder.

Pretty sure the only reason you got tipped was because those customers did indeed want to fata you.

That sounds like two different threads. One very nsfw.

Hey! Vending Machines kill more people annually than Sharks and Cows combined!!

I think your premise is pretty misguided.
I remember when I was an attractive young woman bartending at a steak house, all the old men wanted to do was tell me about the diamond pattern they cut on their lawn the day before. Total power move, talking about lawn care to someone who didn't own a yard.

We are new fur-parents to our fur-baby!

Kidding, hate those people. Anyways, new kitten, I hate scooping. Bought this at Lee Valley:

Just dump the whole thing in the sieve on top of a box, put the #### in the garbage, pour the newly sifted litter back in the litter box. With a plastic bag in the litter box, no sticking issues. Top up with litter if required, done.

I saw enclosed cat boxes like this at a friend's place. It's pretty cool. It looks like someone's crash pad for keys and stuff, but hides their kitty litter.

I don't have cats, but other than price, I honestly don't know why this isn't done more frequently. I bet you can DIY a version for cheap using IKEA and whatnot. You don't even need to enclose it. You just need to have a tall enough side table or coffee table on top to hide it.

I have a friend with cats and I'm tempted to replace their birthday gift one year to buy an enclosed litter box that looks like a fancy side table as a birthday gift to them one day or whatever. Fataing gross wandering past an exposed cat litter box every time I use the washroom when I go to their place.

On a side note, I seem to recall on farms that sawdust helps to get rid of the smell of piss and manure. I seem to recall that most people would mix saw dust or at least sprinkle stuff on top of kitty litter to deal with the smell. I don't think I've seen a cat owner do this for the last decade or two. Why? Is it a forgotten tip/"hack" or something? Why not both litter and sawdust?
