I've tried doing that here, but stopped because I think it was just sending the wrong message. More often than not I just got a snarky response from the server/bartender, my guess is they assume you're hitting on them and are actually asking them to come sit with you and drink

You Know What Really Grinds My Gears? Now with 3x more gears...
The only time tipping makes sense to ensure good service is either by tipping up front (like the sample a few posts up about tipping the Maître D for a good table, or the bartender with your first drink) or if you are a repeat customer (where I suppose your last tip “at the end” of the meal essentially becomes a tip up front for your next one)

How about in this thread, when a page after a topic was starting to get stale and was finally moved on from, someone brings it up again (and doesn't have anything original or new to contribute that hasn't already been discussed) and sets off another four pages of round-about conversation that we already just had...
Grinds my gears.

Fair enough. Old men do have a very strange sense of entitlement when it comes to service staff.
In those cases I would definitely agree it’s about control. Their antiquated views about women are off putting. However I’d be hesitant to apply that logic to tipping on a wider scale.

That could only be a possibility in a pub that is dead. In the pubs I worked in and go to, staff are full on serving at a rate of knots and don’t have the time to sit with customers. I’m talking about trying to get served quickly when the bar is three lines deep with customers trying to get served.

Plus if they want to be separated from their money to feel better about themselves - whether on onlyfans or an attractive server - let them . More money for the server /staff
And it isn’t just old dirty men . Old dirty ladies do the same thing .
At least if they are tipping your aren’t tolerating it for free ! They would still be old creeps either way

Oh I know what you mean, and this must just be a cultural thing, but in those cases then you just get a "Sorry, I'm too busy"
It definitely just has a different meaning here

How do the “pro tipping” crowd feel about other things with hidden charges. i.e $600 flight with $300 of taxes, fuel charges, etc?
I don’t mind tipping, but I’d rather it just get build into the price up front, just like I’d rather the flight was just listed as $900.

I would personally prefer no tipping with the associated increase in prices. Everyone tips differently and the stigma surrounding giving a good tip is toxic. Further, tip creep is real and every business is now doing it.
Also, the idea that tipping promotes good service is practically non-existent today.
Have the government outlaw tipping prompts on card machines (or something). With the lack of cash transactions today, tipping would slowly die out

It’s not to have a drink right there and right then.
When I had drinks bought for me, I’d have them at a time that suited me, which was never while working.
You’re making it far more difficult than it actually is and describing scenarios that haven’t happened in over thirty years of visiting pubs, here or in Calgary.
They either ring it in and have it later or take the value of the drink.

I know exactly what you are trying to describe, I'm saying in my experience, it doesn't work or do what the intention is. They never ring anything or take the the value of anything, they walk away with a weird look on their face

I don’t get you. You describe a bunch of scenarios that are somewhat odd, like they think they’re being hit on, or don’t have time to drink it and getting snarky responses. Things that have never happened to me in over 30 years from both sides of the bar.
I’m not saying it gets the desired service enhancement ALL the time, but it gets a better level of service enough of the time to make it worth my while and it sure got a service enhancement from me when I was working in pubs.

I know and understand the intent, like I said I used to do it too, but stopped after too many awkward encounters where I think it sent the wrong message. That's all I'm saying, so I'm not sure why you were getting upset with me like I'm trying to argue.
Sorry my experience was different than yours I guess?

I think it's just the phrasing you'd use for that is different. Here you should say "keep the change" when handing over a $20 or "ring in a $10 tip with that" to accomplish the same thing.

No ####, that's the entire reason I brought it up to attempt to have an interesting discussion about it. No idea how that turned into an argument and somehow being told my experience was wrong
