Did you see Gaudreau thump guys in the corner and take their puck away, then pass to the slot?

They have completely different laying styles, though they are both really nice passers. But even their passes are different.

Never heard of Royal Road. But pretty sure Royal Road is about to become the go-to phrase for color commentary displacing "half wall" and "bumper position" neither of which I heard of 10 years ago.

They’re not the same type of player. Gaudreau moves the puck up the ice (in his possession) pretty much better than anyone in the entire league. Huberdeau has never been that guy. They play completely different games.

But yeah, Gaudreau is great - that’s why we offered him somewhere around $88M to stay here only for him to say “nah”.

Huberdeau also set up a number of his teammates for golden chances last night only for them to miss/flub them. If this team can get a better finisher to put on his line - look out.

Huberdeau was never going to be that guy. What I was expecting was a guy who could create a scoring chance out of nowhere with a slick pass. He does seem to set up a wide open whiff at least once a game so either his passes aren’t quite as good this year or the finishing sucks. Probably a combo

Did the NHL watch the same game as me? That was the most hostile dome I've ever seen, and they make it sound like it was an Iginla-esque homecoming. I can freaking assure you that it was not lol.

He's a great player, there's no argument to be had. He was creating chances for his team, and that's what he did for the Flames.

Also want to acknowledge the crown again. They would boo when he'd come on the ice during a stoppage line change, not just when he had the puck. It was almost a playoff atmosphere and it was as good as any high energy Saturday night I've seen.

I even quipped that I wish more UFAs would walk away from the Flames because last night was tons of fun haha.
Even playing for bottom-dwelling opposition, Johnny still made for a more entertaining and fun Flames game.

Apart from the boos and the atmosphere generated by his return, I just miss having a player like that to watch on the Flames.

I think he may be nursing a lower body injury for sure - as his skating has been off all season after the first 4 or 5 games. He looked much quicker last season.

In terms of playmaking though the vision and creativity is still there and the finishing has been terrible.

Last night along I can think of:

-Nice pass to Kadri that should have been a tap in but Kadri wasn't ready
-Pass to Kadri in the slot where he missed the net by 4 feet
-Stolen puck and quick pass to Lucic with no shot off.
-Cross ice pass on the PP where Kadri double clutched and then Korpisalo made a nice save

Think there was one other one too that I can't think of. And that doesn't include a great shift in the first that led to a couple chances, and the actual goal that was scored off a broken play from a pass he made that the player couldn't handle.

I hope he can keep at least a little bit of the physical game he brought last night too though - not sure where it came from but he was using his size more effectively than I've ever seen from him before. That one shift truly was Iggy-esque.

Yeah, that is what lines up with what I was thinking. Feels like he should have at least 10 more points this year and maybe more. His gaffes are more obvious cause his passes aren't getting finished

Yup, was there.

I stood up and cheered for Johnny after the video. How could you not?

Then we immediately booed him. How could you not?

Gaudreau was also a -2

He had some real skin in the game last night but has been floating a lot this season

Adam Fox got a hostile Saddle Dome. I think the fans did it right. Appreciate him for what he did as a Flame. Boo him now, he chose to become the enemy. He is a dynamic player though. Fun game glad the Flames got the W at the end.

It was hilarious Oiler fans come into the thread to talk about Johnny being the best player on the ice when he was almost invisible outside the two passes on the PP and penalty shot, and gave the puck away on the OT winner.

Huberdeau made the same plays as you mentioned and it was either going to Lucic lol or Kadri who has finish but also shoots wide a lot.

He also created some turnovers off the back check that never got converted.

The Laine goal was not good from Vladar. The pass was not fast from Johnny and Vladar was slow to read the play and slow moving across. It was definitely a savable shot by many goalies in the league.

Don’t forget “looks”.

Nothing is worse than “looks”. It’s chances. Has been for 100 years.

One thing I’ve noticed about Huberdeaus great passes is that they are always juuuuuuust slightly behind the player receiving. This is not entirely his fault as the receiver isn’t always well positioned either. But for an elite passer the pass needs to be on the stick at a time when a shot can be quickly released. I’m looking at you Toffoli…

Isn't the Royal Road basically the same as the slot? Why do we have to give new names to the same thing?

I'm sure Vladar would be the first to admit that he should have had that one. He made some good saves and got the W though.
