Markstrom would have given up 1 or 2 in the first. Vladar has a way of keeping the Flames tied or ahead in most of his games.

This is the key and what separates Vladar so far

he's a very resilient goalie in-game. so while a lead might get squandered, he doesn't let the Flames get any worse than even

also very good at going neck and neck with goalie at the other end, and at 10-4-4 he more often than not saves 1 more than them

Markstrom has a very tough time keeping up with the guy at the other end

he doesn't get the same run support, but he also doesn't inspire the run support by holding the fort

I thought Vladar was OK. He let in a couple of squeakers, but he also made some good saves and also a really solid play to break up a centering pass to chip the puck out when Columbus was building pressure. It showed good anticipation and awareness. It didn't directly set up the sequence for the 2nd goal (Columbus briefly got possession back), but it did allow the Flames to break out of the zone at least.

Keeping in mind that Vladar is still technically a back-up, I think he did a fair job. He gave the team a chance to win, that is all he really needs to do.

Laine-Roslovic-Nyquist was the latest one that worked ok I think, a few games back. There was somebody else earlier in the season too but I can't remember (I'm a goldfish). I'm sure me and our Slovakian friend have written about them in the roster thread (or at least in the GDTs). FWIW I'm not sure if we're saying they've been good/great fits, but they've been able to do things and it frees Johnny to play with others...
