Goaltending effects gameplay, confidence, momentum, etc. of the whole team. If Markstrom makes a big save instead of letting in the second goal (or whatever), the game could completely change direction.
I don't think it's as simple as saying "you can't win scoring one goal" after their goalie let in three in the first period, completely crushing the energy in the building and sagging the team.
The whole team sucked, not just Markstrom. No doubt about that. Just sayin'

This is 100% on coaching. I don't have a major issue with Darryl's overall philosophy, but he is incredibly rigid and he forces guys like Huberdeau to completely change their game to fit his system and philosophy. Like a good soldier, Huberdeau is doing what is asked of him, but it's not taking his strongest attributes into account and this is why he doesn't look like a "100 point player" here. It's a severe lack of imagination on Sutter's part.
Seriously, some of the quotes in this thread I want to save and throw back in people's faces regarding Huberdeau. You can tell who watches games other than Flames' games and who does not. Just some embarrassing posts to read that will definitely not age well.
Also, who the hell wants to get rid of Weegar? He's easily our best defender at denying zone entry. Just so effortless anytime the puck comes to his side of the ice. He takes it away and send the puck the other direction.

100% on coaching? Come on man, what is up with CP always blaming the coaching for everything? I’ve probably said it a thousand times already, but Darryl isn’t forcing guys to “completely change” their game here. Darryl just puts a stronger emphasis on checking for chances which all teams do to a certain extent.
The work on the defensive side of the game is also very task/detail oriented, but it doesn’t mean there’s no room for offense. Tkachuk and Gaudreau played the exact same system last season and were dynamite night in, night out. Huberdeau has the same type of opportunities as the other guys did to create on the rush and he gets tons of Ozone starts to play in the offensive zone.
Ultimately though, what is causing Huberdeau’s decline in offense this season has more to do with how the opposition is defending him this season rather than Sutter IMO. How an opponent decides to defend you pretty determines how your offensive game can unfolds, for instance, if a team decided to deploy the neutral zone trap all game long, then odds are, you’ll probably be dumping and chasing all night while generating very little on the rush. Conversely, if a team opens up against the Flames like the Sharks did earlier in the season, then rush scoring chances likely increases which also happened to coincide with Huberdeau’s best outing this season (3 points), go figure.
One major criticism I will say about Huberdeau this season, is he’s been really poor with his decision making under duress. He’s been guilty of all kinds of turnovers because of soft plays, being easily stripped off of pucks, blind passes, passing into coverage, passing instead of shooting and etc.
He’s made a lot of poor decisions in this department and it has cost him some ice time because the coach can’t trust him out there. That’s very much on Huberdeau or possibly his teammates, which is possibly a roster construction thing which is a conversation for a different thread. But in terms of the coach, no, Darryl isn’t asking him to turnover pucks, blindly throwing pucks into bad places and not shooting in the grade A areas he’s found himself in.

How much less would Hubby get on a 8 year deal at this point ?
We miss signing JG and MT early , and overpay Hubby and (maybe) Weegar to lock them up before a down year
Such is life as a Flames fan

He wouldn’t have been on the Flames. So depends on where he ended up and how he performed there. I’m guessing still 9

He would if he wanted the 8th year - which after a down year is even more important

They weren't worth paying an All-stars wage after the 2020-2021 season, alot of Flames fans wanted them traded. JG and MT had two great seasons with Calgary, they were mostly invisible in the playoffs and didn't have the next gear to make a difference.

They would’ve traded him in my opinion, No way they walk another player to UFA if he refused to sign.

A balls to the wall rebuild is much more fun than watching an old core try to chase the last playoff spot.
Change my mind.

Yep, I was in the same boat last summer. I was begging for a rebuild.
The biggest fear I had going into the season was that this team would be be mediocre and end up in 9th place just narrowly missing the playoffs. Well, it looks like that fear could very well be reality.
I did hold on to the hope that if the Flames did indeed stink, that we could at the very least trade Huberdeau and Weegar as rentals for even more picks and prospects and then tank for Bedard. But then Treliving re-signed them both to franchise record contracts…and Sutter re-signed as well……

I think they Oilered it. eyes lit up at the name recognition, scanned the stats page on nhl.com

I doubt they were ever scouting him because he was never thought to be available, in league circles, or even within Florida, according to JH

Do you seriously think they sit around, doing nothing, waiting to be told to go scout this player or that player? Do you not understand that it is their job to watch pretty much every game, and have a book on every team and every player?
JFC
And this actually got thanked a couple times.

I would guess they didn't scout him in particular as an ask from Fla. But obviously a pro scout knows him and his game. It's Jonathan Huberdeau. A great passer like Gaudreau, but bigger and stronger but less of a puck carrier (and the same age as Gaudreau). A PPG at the very least for the previous 4 seasons with all kinds of linemates.
Then look at the offers coming from other teams. All inferior.
Yes, he's paid a lot. He was meant to take JG's place and he's making the JG salary which was offered. Honestly - I'm not sure Gaudreau's contract will age any better. He's got 10 points more or so, all based on ES, but he's a big minus number. JG's bigger offensive numbers also come with more TOI because his team isn't as good.
