I think they Oilered it. eyes lit up at the name recognition, scanned the stats page on nhl.com
saw the 115 points and did a victory dance/lap
I doubt they were ever scouting him because he was never thought to be available, in league circles, or even within Florida, according to JH

They need to take more risks. Huberdeau, Kadri, Lindholm, etc all really seem to be showing no real creativity this year.
Its "Hit the blue line, dump the puck in, retrieve it, work it back to the point, point shot, hope for a rebound"
No royal road passes, nothing cross ice, everything is behind the net, back to the point, point shot.
Also Lucic, Ruzicka, and Duehr were all poor tonight IMO. No reason that Pelletier shouldnt get a look next game.

Agreed but he won't do it so the best option is to fire him.
Look at the past champions they don't play this grind it out slow game. As much as Darryl wants to say Tampa changed how they played they remained a top offensive team and goals against remained low. They just added some harder players. Kucherov wasn't paired with Goodrow and Coleman.
Right now we are being out coached by a wide margin. Team isn't ready to start games and I don't care about first period goals. Starting games means the opening faceoff the first few shifts creating momentum and it's just not there.
Faceoffs and important faceoffs are a massive concern as well.

Just thinking out loud but is it possible Sutter's lost the room already?

Ya I never would have thought I would turn on Sutter but I think I’m done with him as head coach.
And I thought he would be the perfect head coach for the Flames for eternity.

Last year wasn’t just strong stats. He looked damn good.
And he is a damn good player
Not sure why it’s not working here

Yup I think you have summarized exactly the extent of the due diligence that was done.

The guy doesn't even know the proper stats of his own team. He could hardly put together a coherent answer about thr team unable to create slot chances earlier as well.
He can talk about analytics all he wants but it seems like he really doesn't understand them and implement it. Just shoot lots corsi yay.

Playing scared, just is trying to be defensively responsible. Understandably that lessens his offensive impact when he’s trying to play a sound defensive game to stay on coaches good side.

It kind of reminds me of the end of his GM tenure. He acted like he was smarter than everyone else. I think the team needs a new coach. I like Treliving but I doubt he has another coach hire left so in the offseason clean house. New coach and GM.
The 3 year extension is a big problem, maybe that kind of security made Sutter too bold. Not sure Edwards would want to eat a 3 year deal.

To be fair to Sutter though, he's working with the roster he has. I know this forum has extremely high expectations on the players in the farm that they're gonna perform better than the top 9 players on the roster currently, but that's just not realistic.
Faceoffs and lack of finish being woeful is the responsibility of the person who's assembled the team. The blame for the current mediocracy of the team is on Treliving. There's a significant lack of offensive talent on the roster. He tried to salvage something after his two important players left the team this offseason, but the results so far indicate that it wasn't enough to replace their production, and the team is missing it significantly.

In an alternate universe this team is 18-18-12 with two or three first round picks, a blue chip prospect and a ton of cap space.

Sutters done nothing to earn any good will from this fan base this season
the holier than thou approach and refusal to allow any youthful talent to permeate the nhl roster
overplaying bottom 6 vets
overplaying markstrom and then lying about why it's justified
awkward defecating comments about your new superstar
the ****ed up 4th line dispersion tactic after starting 5-1
maybe Sutter needs to look in the mirror here and reflect on the rigidity of his decisions and approach so far

This team is in really, really big trouble for the next number of years with how they've painted themselves into a corner with bloated contracts for the wrong types of players.

I don't think there have been many games this year where Huberdeau was noticeably the best forward on the ice let alone the best winger. Granted, you can cut him some slack because he's adapting to a new team but we may not see him look dominant in Flames silks until next year.
