Boneheaded Things You Have Done
I am going to put myself out there for roasting, but I admit I can be pretty flakey at times. Just today, I took a pair of socks out of the drawer and after putting one on, I couldn't find the other one. I was going bonkers looking for it and it was driving me nuts. I couldn't understand how a sock could just disappear out thin air. Eventually, I had to cut my losses and just put on another pair. When I was taking off my one sock, I realizing that I put one sock over another on the same foot.
One of my more recent favourites was about 2 weeks ago. I have a big jug of Frank's Red Hot that has been in the cupboard for a while. I took it out to use some, but it is really old and I noticed the colour wasn't quite as vibrant anymore. I opened it to give it a smell and taste, it seemed fine. I thought, I better check the internet to see if this stuff actually goes bad. Sometimes things that have a "best before" date don't actually go bad, but it is more about how the product looks over time. Given how acidic hot sauce is, I figured that was probably the case here. I went to the computer to look it up and got sidetracked (likely on CP), but eventually got around to looking it up. People were saying it was fine to consume, but just to shake it up well. I went back to the kitchen and grabbed the jug and just started shaking it like crazy. Like in a really violent and sarcastic way. It was after the 3rd shake that I realized that I didn't put the lid back on. I was covered in hot sauce, there was hot sauce on the floor, on the ceiling, on the appliances, on my phone, on my VR headset that was charging near by. Two weeks later, and I am still finding splatter in areas. To make it worse, my wife just happened to walk by when I did it and she thought that I was going insane or something.
A really minor one, but recent. I lost my house keys for a couple of weeks and eventually found them in the freezer. My best guess is that when I got home, I was in a rush to put the groceries away (likely because I wanted to check CP), and still had them in my hand when I started putting stuff away and just dropped them.
Anyone got any good ones? Please tell me I am not the only one prone to being a bonehead.

Yeah, after getting ribbed on CP about drinking a cooler for about 20 Years I'll wait for a few more responses.

I was at the gym two Saturdays ago, doing some deadlifts, and decided for a split second to look at the mirror to my left to check my form; that split second I went off-balance, twisted my spine and absolutely destroyed everything in my lower back. Dropped the weights in extreme pain. Couldn't walk for two days after that, and have been limping and in pain ever since. Feels like my back has stopped healing at 60% of how it used to feel.
Life tip: don't #### around when deadlifting, that #### will ruin you.

Knew my wife's summer tires were getting to end of life. Didn't change them in time for -25C in early Nov and she drove through Bankview and going downhill slid into a parked car.
Double points for me coming to get her and telling her after she resolved with Police that I would drive car home. To which I slid into second parked car.
The best part is she said we should tow it after her accident and I was being a man, and thinking I could do it in the face of reason.
Super boneheaded. I am just thankful no one was hurt.

Oh man, I could write a book on mine...my mom pretty clearly has a strong case of undiagnosed ADHD, and I seem to be growing into it more and more every year. The amount of dumb stuff that's happened because of only half-reading something is extensive. Also Murphy's Law moments are a constant in my life, it's funny how quickly new people I'm dating notice it and get a kick out of it. Being a veteran jazz cabbage performer isn't helping, but at least it keeps the growing ADHD at bay.
I just have to pick a story to share now, there's too many...

Once I was sitting on my back steps, having a cigarette on a nice day. Looked down on the steps and saw this white, greenish blob. I thought thats weird, what is that? I picked it up, wondering what it could possibly be while rolling it in between my fingers. Strange, I thought.
That's when I realized it was bird ####.
Good times.

My ongoing stupid moment that happens frequently is that I like to send myself emails to remember to do certain things or what not.
So I will pick up my phone and email myself.
I will then set the phone down which at that point it buzzes.
So I immediately pick it up to see who emailed me.
And of course it's just me.
idiot.

I did a similar thing as the OP about a week ago.
While packing away some delicious leftover borscht, I lifted the container up to about eye-level to wipe away any potential staining drops from the bottom and sides of the container. Unbeknownst to me, while tilting my head to inspect this container, I was also slightly beginning to tilt the boscht. Borscht left the container, and as gravity would have it, made contact with the granite counter top resulting in a splatter. It splattered across the counter, appliances, floor, myself, walls, etc. as well as my mostly white dog.

I bought a soup a few months ago for the next day's lunch and when I got home (late at night), put it on the counter then went straight to bed. Forgot to put it in the fridge.

And we had a season's pass to West Ed Waterpark, I'm wearing a blue Oilers jersey in my I.D. pic
We moved to Calgary a year later. Between that, and discovering I was actually born in Calgary (I always thought it was Edmonton, for some reason where you're born was a big deal to me in terms of who you cheered for), and that was that. My relatives were sickened to see me in red the next Christmas...and every Christmas since then.

Haha. I've done that. Or losing your phone and immediately thinking, oh I know, I will just call it and follow the ring.

At one time I had a collection of 300+ vinyl records in mint condition. They all had plastic sleeves to protect the jacket cover and angel sleeves to protect the record. I gave up thinking there would ever be a market for them so I sold the lot of them for $100 and threw in a vintage Dual turntable and a pair of Bose speakers back in the early 2000.

Similar for me. Spent a few hours and $$ in ingredients making a large batch of meat sauce only to watch TV while it's cooling off on the stove, forget about it, go to bed. Wake up in the morning and it's still sitting on the stove.

I dunno. I’m sure you will find guidance online about throwing out anything that has been out 2 hours
Theoretically, spores of Clostridium perfrengins (a common culprit in food poisoning) could survive cooking, particularly for short periods of time, and at some point could germinate and then begin to multiply.
In this paper, the authors deliberately introduced spores and observed growth rates
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/art...202611/?page=4
Nothing in the first 150 minutes. (Conclusion being that cooling for 2 hours, it was still safe). And that is with deliberately introduced new spores, which are not exposed to cooking temperatures for sustained times, only introduced then starting cooling
For practical purposes, if it was simmered for a long time and then left overnight, then after bringing it back to a boil and simmering, I would expect you are unlikely to be at risk
I have, countless times over the past few decades, cooked meat sauces chili, and stew, things that simmered for hours, left them out overnight, reheated the next day and not once have had an issue.
Edit: this is not advice, of course.
