A 6-year-old boy is in police custody after he shot a teacher at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia, Friday afternoon, Police Chief Steve Drew said in a news conference.

Drew said the female teacher – who is in her 30s – was shot inside a classroom and added that “this was not an accidental shooting.”

The police chief said there was an altercation between the teacher and the student, who had the firearm, and that a single round was fired.

Apparently the school has metal detectors, but they only do random checks. Imagine being in grade 1 and having to go through metal detectors, even just randomly? It's amazing to me that so many in the U.S. don't think this is a problem.

I'm a lot less worried about a dad like that at least teaching proper handling and trigger discipline (and one would hope proper gun storage) than some deadbeat dad who doesn't pay attention to his kids and keeps a loaded glock in his nightstand

I get this, and morally I agree. But it's America, guns are everywhere and they're never going away. So it's not a choice between a 5-year old with a gun or without, it's a 5-year old with unrestricted access to guns and no oversight vs parents that at least put some effort into educating their kids about them. If that video was filmed in Canada I would find it abhorrent, but that high horse has long been put down and shot in the US

Is that really proper though? It looks like he is teaching him how to reload as quickly as possible for maximum kills. That doesn't seem like a tactic for teaching a kid how to use a gun as a tool for self-defense.

It is ####ing perverse that a 5 yr old should be learning weapons handling.

And it's also perverse that kids need to regularly practice active shooter drills, and that a market for bullet proof backpacks now exists. But Americans seem to value their guns more than anything else, including their children

That's not unique to the US. My kids had regular drills in school as well (Calgary). And we've discussed active shooter scenarios at work as part of our ERP.

Yeah...it sucks. But I'd rather they know what to do than have the thing just be sheer unadulterated panic.

Sad top say that I dont remember which shooting it was, but I remember watching some security camera footage of an armed shooter in a school and some kid just wandering through the halls.

You could see the shooter in one part of the screen and a random kid in another and on that day and in that moment that little kid chose to go left, for whatever reason, instead of right and put himself unknowingly right in front of the guy with a gun.

I'd prefer there to be a system and a valid reason for all the kids to proverbially 'go left.'

I would argue that this is a result of being neighbors with the US and having a front row seat to their carnage vs any actual threats to Canadian schools. The only school shooting in Canada that would have cracked the US news was L'Ecole Polytechnique, and that was over 30 years ago
