Default How to fix the PP

I think one of the issues with the PP comes from not having a lefty on the first unit who can one time the puck. Huberdeau usually played the left point on PP so that he can fake a shot, shoot or pass without moving his body so it is seamless, it results in him making great PP passes for a one timer or set up another player that opposition can't read. That is how he assisted so much on PP previous years.

Right now Flames are playing Toffoli on that left point due to his one timer and his preferred shot location, but this leaves Huberdeau to play on the right point. Lefty playing on the right point can't make seamless passes east-west without changing his body position. There is a delay in how fast that pass can be made so it is easier for opposition to read it thus intersect it. The other option is to have your body facing the left point but then you are not so much a threat for the shot so players move a bit to intersect the pass and the goalie can cheat. If he is facing the left point to make a pass, he can still shoot but your body is not properly positioned and you can't get as hard of a shot off

I think Hubedreau should play left point as that is where he excels at, and Flames need to figure out who can take one timers on that right point. But, if you remember last year Lindholm has that amazing quick release on right point, so I think we can use that unless somebody can get a shot off quicker. My preferred positioning would be, Andersson qb, Hub left point, Kadri net front, Lindholm right point and Ruzicka the high middle player. Ruzicka has a great shot and probably the hardest shot out of our forwards so I think he is the perfect player for Hubedrau to feed him passes so he can take shots in the middle from the top circles.

I like Toffoli on the PP but he is just the extra player that limits our PP potential, we have 2 players who are shooters on PP1 and both of them are righties. You need a lefty and the best option is Ruzicka imo.

The best PP player we have is Huberdeau and we should be structuring the PP around him

I actually thought the powerplay looked better last night despite not scoring. They were at least trying east west and not just point shots.

Keep Kadri in front of the net. He’s very good at deflections. I have no idea why he got moved from that spot

I thought it looked better when it was a 4 on 3 with the 4 forwards.

I think they need to try some different configuration and players. What they are doing is not working.

Looks like they have some practice time coming up with a few days between games so hopefully they can work on it a bit. It's been a very busy schedule.

I think they had Huberdeau net front recently which I do not think makes much sense at all

Yeah same IMO. Rasmus should shoot more and doesn't. So give it to Stone who not only likes to crank it, it has enough power that he puts the fear of god in PK forwards when he winds up in space.

Huberdeau - Half wall guy on the left
Kadri - Bumper
Stone - Point Clapper
Toffoli - Net Front Presence (maybe he'll hit more nets and less posts from in tight, lol)
Lindholm - Half wall guy on the right

Coaching, practice and therapy first. It's often mental or emotional issues getting in the way. But once that's out of the way, you just gotta practice lots.

If the above fail, you either live with not scoring as much as you wanted. Or you make the difficult decision to bring in a new stud who is able to bring it many different way and knows how to finish. A guy like tarasenko can blast clean, hard shots in from the half-wall, or sneak his way into the dirty areas for a backdoor tap-in. You have a guy like that and there are no PP problems. I guarantee it

my ideal pp would be weegar qb, like the way he has been playing recently and the speed he gives off the rush. Kadri in front wreacking havoc, Huberdeau left point with lindholm right point and ruzicka as well to shoot off the top circle.

I don’t think Stone should be on it. For as big as his shot is, he seems to have little control of it. Too low skill. Removing Andersson is a fine choice, but our trigger men should 100% be Lindholm and Toffoli.

1. Net-front: Kadri
2. Post-position for close one-timers/net-front (left-side): Toffoli
3. Right circle: Lindholm
4. Left side half-boards: Huberdeau
5. Centre point man: Weegar

That’s your 5 in my eyes

PP2:

1. Net-front: Coleman
2. Post-position for close one-timers/net-front (right-side): Dube
3. Left circle: Mangiapane
4. Right side half-boards: Backlund
5. Centre point man: Hanifin

Effectively flip the deployment on PP2 so you’re heavier on opposite sides depending on which unit it is.

I think the power play would be better if they scored more power play goals.

Stone has a big shot with zero control he just shoots doesn't matter what is happening around him.

I think we try Weegar and Mangiapane on the top unit you don't need someone blasting the puck just needs to get through.

They haven’t had a bonafide LH one-time threat since Dion was here.

I know it’s very in vogue to work it down low and bump to the slot, but there’s a simple elegance to moving it around the horn to open up a bomb of a one-timer.

And don’t tell me it can’t be done because of how other teams defend - OV is about to shatter the goals record and he’s been scoring the same goal since he got here.

I don’t know how much handedness plays a role, but I would be perfectly happy to see Stone as the man up top on the 1st unit.

Weegar has 8 career power play points. It looks like he was rarely used on the PP in Florida, just like here. He may not be that guy.

They need to shift the attack point from high in the umbrella (current look with Andersson) to behind the net or from the corner with a forward that can manage the puck, use the easy outlet (back up the wall) but be looking for the seam pass.

That breaks down the box.

Keeping it at the tip of the umbrella with two wall feeds is too easy to defend.
