Florida running it back potentially walks 2 key players to UFA where they either sign them to max term extensions or risk losing them for nothing but instead they turned 2 late 20’s players into a mid-20’s franchise winger who plays a rare style of elite player and pest.

I don’t have a problem with their roster moves at all in the offseason but the moves they made giving up premium assets for rentals they had no chance of keeping were obviously terrible in hindsight as they only won 4 playoff games last year.

The truly baffling move they made was bringing in Paul Maurice who is legit the most mid coach out there but seems to always get work whenever he wants.

They have 10-11 million but only have three defencmen and 9 forwards signed.
That cap will get eaten up pretty quickly just to fill out the roster.

This is a little off topic, but what are the main changes in Panthers style of play compared to what they had with Q? I have never paid attention to Panthers that much until this season so I have no idea. I just know that they had the run and gun mentality

It's pretty minor ...

They are generating less and giving up more for sure, but not to the extent you'd think.

Even their team save percentage is pretty flat, which I thought was part of the problem.

Last year they scored more with less ... (GF>xGF), this year that has flipped and their shooting percentage is down a half point.

Most of the differentials suggest they are spending more time in their own zone than they did last year.

Still weird seeing Johnny in a non-Flames uniform

They don't activate their defense nearly as much, this is where they miss Weegar the most. So essentially they try to play more defensively but the defense hasn't gotten any better. So they went from high flying offense and mediocre defense to no flying offense with mediocre defense. Nice job Maurice, lol.

But the biggest thing is that almost everyone is performing worse under him. They lack confidence. Winnipeg doesn't seem to miss him either.

Thanks. I see everywhere people saying that Maurice killed the offence and I've been thinking about what's the difference in the coaching style. I don't see Tkachuk struggling, but on the other hand he is a special player

The last two pages are a massive LOL.

Florida is better without Weegar and Huberdeau? Going from 1st overall to missing the playoffs is better? They didn't trade them because of cap issues they had no cap issues with them this season. The GM is a big dummy and thought shaking up a 1st place team was the answer.

Tkachuk having a bigger impact? I guess one of his patented non-playoff finishes and a nice big regular season?

Hilarious takes.

Flames fans: Get rid of this core they suck we had no elite players.

Flames fans: We miss Johnny and Matthew so much we have no elite players since they left.

Did people want to get rid of the core after we had 2 top 10 scorers, and won the division? It was pretty universal that the team and fans wanted to keep those players.

Florida lost a lot more than Huberdeau and Weegar and I do not think that trade is the reason they are worse. Florida doesn’t have a 30 year old and 29 year old about to start 8 year extensions but now have a 25 year old on pace for the same 108pts he scored last year

Huberdeau is on pace for 61pts per 82 games and this team is 23rd in goals for.

The Flames and Panthers have the same number of wins this year but Calgary has had more loser points and plays in a far weaker division.

The Flames walked Brodie and Hamonic to free agency in a year they were on the bubble lost them for nothing (after paying an absurd price for Hamonic). They lost Gio to expansion in a year they were missing the playoffs when they could have recouped assets. They walked Johnny to free agency to see him leave.

Florida after a massively disappointing playoff saw an opportunity to get a unicorn player. Chucky is not a unicorn because he is the best player but he brings a rare combination of being an elite pest and elite player. They got him for a couple of guys in their late 20’s who were in the last year of their deals, and average prospect and a protected 1st.

Florida has cap issues next year and instead of losing 2 players for nothing they added a long term franchise level player. The Flames now have those guys signed for 8 more years and also have no cap flexibility and are a year out from having to pay 2 more late 20’s players massive raises on 8 year deals in Li dholm and Hanifin.

Gaudreau isn't really one of the most entertaining guys in the league this year though, you are living off memories

he is 54th in points, 114th in goals -16
almost all of it in losing efforts

I think its fair to say CBJ expected more for almost 10M?

(I am aware Flames players are in the same boat, no need to tell me)
Yeah, only 38 points in 44 games. He's boring now, especially when they have Boone Jenner putting up 22 points as second place on their team...

Have you watched him this season? He's still making plenty of exciting, highlight-reel plays this year, and even though he's been cold recently he's still their most dynamic and exciting player on the ice, just as he was for the Flames in seasons where he was below a ppg pace.

TORONTO -- Johnny Gaudreau said he expects to hear some jeers Jan. 23 when he plays at the Calgary Flames for the first time since leaving them to join the Columbus Blue Jackets in the offseason.
Quote:
"I won't take it personally. The Calgary Flames have a great passionate fan base, a great organization," the forward told NHL.com on Friday. "And I get it. Like any sports team, you don't want to see players leave.

"I'm a big Philadelphia Eagles fan. And if Jalen Hurts were to leave, I'd probably boo him too. I get it. Fans are passionate. It's nothing personal. It's part of sports.

"If I get cheers, that'll be awesome. And if I get booed -- and I'm sure I will -- that's OK too. It shows how supportive they are to their team. It's a great hockey city and I wouldn't expect anything else."
Quote:
"It'll be tough on one hand," he said. "I mean, there are a lot of friends and neighbors I had away from the rink that you miss, so it'll be nice to get the chance to play in front of them.

"It was a special place and I'll keep saying it was a hard decision, even if some people don't believe me. I'll say this: It's going to be fun to play against some of my old teammates and have some old friends there to watch. It's going to be a cool experience, a fun experience, and I'm looking forward to it."
Quote:
"The city has been so great to us too. The entire experience has been so amazing on so many levels. We've been embraced and welcomed so much, whether at the rink or in the community. And we've had a revolving door at our home. There are always family, friends, neighbors coming in and out. The logistics of family coming to visit, it's just so much easier here.

"From a hockey standpoint it's been tough. You don't want to make excuses but from an injury standpoint, we've had more than our share. But the fans keep coming and it's been amazing. And for someone like me who's here for the long term, it's great to see some of the kids come up who wouldn't normally be here if not for all the injuries, and see just how promising the future is."
Quote:
"Like I keep saying, it was tough to leave," he said. "But people shouldn't mistake that for me not embracing my time in Calgary.

"People there were great to me and I haven't forgotten."

You said one of the most entertaining players in the league not in Columbus. I don't think that's true this season, sorry.

I don’t see many “ok’s”, “you know’s” and “um’s” in those quotes so it probably helps the writer cleaned it up a bit.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching Gaudreau play here and IMO most of the criticism was totally unwarranted. But I was never very interested in his bland interviews or comments to the media.

They traded them because they didn't want to sign them to extensions and didn't want to lose them for nothing. Instead they got a very young excellent pleayer.

I don't think them taking a step back this year was a shock to anyone.

But these deals weren't based on this year alone. it was based on the next 10 years.

I don't know that Florida is trading either of them if Tkachuk suddenly doesn't come available.

It would have been interesting. Didn’t sound like there was much in the way of contract negotiations.

Doesn't make much sense considering all the draft capital they have given up to win now. If you have the top team in the league take as many shots as you can. Like Tampa, Colorado, ect. All teams that choked in the playoffs after amazing regular seasons

Yeah it's pretty simply just shooting and save percentage regression.

Last year they shot 11.01% - 4th in the NHL and a .904 save percentage.

This year they are shooting 9.07% - 24th in the NHL and a .893 save percentage.

And there are some defensive issues.

xGF from 55.5% to 53.0%

xGF per 60 is actually flat: 3.59 per 60 to 3.59 per 60.

xGA per 60 is worse: 2.88 per 60 to 3.19 per 60

So offensively they are finishing worse (maybe not surprising with the amount of career seasons they had last year), and defensively they are both playing worse (wonder if that has to do with losing a 24 minute a night top pairing dman) and getting worse goaltending.
