This sort of contract has worked for a few other teams, so the Wild hope this works out for them as well. Eventually some of these contracts will come and bite back. Total potential based contract. Boldy has not had a very productive sophomore season so far

58 point pace for a sophomore slump isn't the worst.

I'd rather take this risk than have to pay him $8-9 if he blows up next year for 90 points.

Not me. If he proves he's a 90 pt guy, I'll pay him like a 90 pt guy. But taking risk like this and losing, can really sink your cap flexibility.

I don't think it's prudent to take big risks, trying to be a hero with the cap. If you remain prudent, don't make big mistakes, and have a steady influx of ELC contracts, managing the cap shouldn't require large gambles.

It’s also much easier to trade and retain on a younger player than an expiring vet. I like this sort of gamble.

I think this is the way contracts are going to go, lock up the 20's and the traditional pay me for past performance, career ending deal will start to come down in value. Pay guys in their prime, not their declining years

Even if he tops out as a 60 point guy, 7 million is hardly an overpay these days, especially with the cap increasing.

Points aside, any time I happen to catch Wild games, he always seems to be really involved and a center point of the action.

It's risky signing a player with little track record to a long deal like this, but I guess they are betting on him.

I believe many said the same thing when Thompson got signed to his deal.

Boldy is a very good player who likely will only get better. He's been scouted extensively by the Wild since well before he made his debut.

They are presumably confident he will not regress.

This is a decent gamble.

The bigger difference is that teams can largely choose not to lock up young players to 6-8 year deals.

But you either sign (premium) older players to long deals or let them walk.

Now, you are not incorrect, but if you are going to shy away from long deals for older players, you need to be trading them before they reach UFA. Like what Florida did with Huberdeau and Weegar.

i would think that trying to trade a 20-something year old player who is overpaid might be more robust that trading for an overpaid 35 yr old

I'd say this is the most prudent move a good GM can make in today's NHL. Paying a guy like Boldy $7M in 3 years (if he's producing at a 90-100 point level) could easily be the difference in the team being able to pay another meaningful talent on the roster.

They've probably seen more than enough to hedge their bets that he's at worst turning out 65-70 point seasons, or something to that effect. It's always a risk/reward role as a GM, but as many fans know all to well, kicking the can down the road another 3 years often ends up costing the team and it's way better than investing that money in an overpriced veteran.
