We as fans deserve better than that.Get some people in here that know how to build a winner. This is part of the issue. In the 90s ownership did not want to sign players to big deals and now they just spend it like halloween candy. Now ownership will spend to the cap but will not do a full rebuild unless forced and then they want to rush the rebuild.Other than Sutter they did not want to spend the money on exp coaches or gms and that really hurt the product. Remember names like Button and Gilbert. You have to appreciate that ownership will let the gm spend to the cap but what I don't like is their philosophy of just get in and lets see what we can do when we get their. You want a good competitive team each year. Not a team that gets in a loses all the time.
I blame Tre for the situation the team is in. He built this team. He has had 9yrs and has not even come close to doing enough.I also put some blame on ownership because of their philosophy and unwillingness to do a scorched earth mindset and build this team from the ground up and build it properly with a plan and very competent people. This idea of lets just make the playoffs has only worked once in 34 yrs. As a fan it is very frustrating to see this approach taken year after year and not working. This team is not good enough. The media have been telling us and the org but they have done nothing to show us their are good enough. We as fans deserve a lot better than what we have had to watch. They spend the money on ufas lets put that money towards more scouts, better management team and get some success. Also get some new scouts. Tod Button has been their tooo long.

I don't disagree with a lot of this but your "their"s are killin me man!

I don't love how BT gives up picks so easily. I would not hate it as much if we had a better track record at the Draft. The William Stromgren pick is one example of a pick that really bugs me. This especially after what we saw at the World Juniors. For those who aren't aware the Flames took Stromgren with their 2nd Round pick (45th overall) in 2021. I remember at the time being on Twitter and a number of the more popular Flames follows at the time were emphatically pushing to draft Logan Stankoven. He eventually went to Dallas at 47. Dallas btw has an awesome recent draft record.
My worry with this pick is there was a hesistancy to pick another smaller forward. I know there is hindsight when it comes to the draft but the reality is our draft record is not good. Why do we still have some of the same scouts? Does Sutter have any influence on draft day?
If you are going to trade picks and spend a bunch of money in Free Agency you have to produce quality NHLers out of your draft picks!

I'm 78. I was a season ticket holder till 1993. I've purchased Centre Ice every year since so I can watch the Flames here in BC. As a long time fan don't give me this lack of patience b.s. This team has been pathetic ever since they won the cup. Lack of patience my ass!

By far the biggest problem has been that we always wind up with the wrong brother:
1. Wrong Bure
2. Wrong Stone
3. Wrong Niedermayer
4. Wrong Tkachuk (hmmm...)
5. Wrong Hamilton (wait.... there was another Hamilton?!)

Strongly considering raising my young kids to not be Flames fans. What kind of parent would subject their children to this annual torture?

The 04 team had what, 5 or 6 Flames draft picks on it, not to mention players like Regehr and Iggy who were drafted by other teams but come over as prospects.

Hard to argue with some/most of the posts either. Personally I just don't get all that up or down as a rule. Helps with following this team.

My Rule of thumb for watching the Riders is you can always turn the TV off.
If there are any years that they are extra horrible. PVR the games. Check the score before deciding to watch.
Life changing.

The issue isn't just the start of this season in a vacuum. It's what this team has shown vs where they are in their competitive cycle.
They really don't have much of a chance to get better over the next few years, aside from hoping one of their non elite prospects really steps up and becomes a driving force (And we dont even give those guys a chance)
We don't have any cap flexibility going forward, so we can't really improve the team going forward in free agency or trades
Everyone knows Kadri, Markstrum, Coleman, Hubby, Backlund, Tanev are going to, on average, decline over the next few years and into the tail end of their contract.
And yet here we are, struggling to try and hold onto the last wildcard spot. And not looking anywhere like a dangerous team.
Sure, if we had better goaltending we would be better. But we still don't look dangerous. If I was an opponent I would love to play the Flames in the playoffs. We don't have a single player who can take over a game.
So were an older, inflexible cap, average to poor farm system team thats struggling to hold a playoff spot
Honestly - If there was a league wide draft for entire teams rosters for a franchise going forward (not one season, this is your new team to build a winner), how many teams would you really take the Flames over given their entire player and cap situation.
Now I suppose the Flames could quickly restock their youth and start completely over if they traded everyone tomorrow and took back horrible contracts, but that isnt going to happen.
So we're kind of stuck in purgatory again, until we slowly decline into a bottom 6-8 team, and start the same cycle for another 10 years.

Again it seems like this team is trying to buck the trend of how a championship team is built. Often championship teams are drafting and developing core pieces, constructing from the middle of the ice, then back end, then goalie then wingers. Yet here we are, building a team through trades, free agency and our top paid player is again a winger. We went from Iggy to Gaudreau now to Huberdeau. It just never works that way.

My biggest frustration is not selling when you should be selling. I like Coronato but I still look back at the end of the 2020/21 season and don't get why guys weren't shut down early and why we don't sell at the deadline.
Also, when things are obvious that a shakeup is needed why we can't move on from Backlund type players even if he is a long time Flame.
Signing 4th line vets blocks our AHL guys who are dominating right now in the AHL from getting the call. But if you want to give these guys a real crack, selling some top 9 forwards for picks allows them a real shot and helps us replenish the prospect pool.
This franchise is too afraid to take a step back even for a short period and take a chance they will be even better with youth improving.

Yeah the number of times I've responded and then deleted the post before hitting submit.
I've limited myself to those that just post incorrect information to back up a preconceived narrative.
One thing though has been the Gaskal summaries after Flames wins. Really shows you that fans in pretty much every market are pissed off at their teams and thinking they're smarter than the head coach and GM.

04 team had the following guys that I would consider Flames developed prospects - Iginla, Leopold, Lombardi, Saprykin, Clark, Lydman, Regehr, Kobasew, Gauthier, Montador.
10 homegrown prospects that were regulars.
