Gaudreau is one of the most entertaining players in the league. Why would any franchise wanting to sell tickets buy him out?

They won't buy him out unless he totally fell off a cliff
retain and trade maybe
Gaudreau isn't really one of the most entertaining guys in the league this year though, you are living off memories
he is 54th in points, 114th in goals -16
almost all of it in losing efforts
I think its fair to say CBJ expected more for almost 10M?
(I am aware Flames players are in the same boat, no need to tell me)

It's not that surprising they are poor, even if that is a wash they lose Weegar and others mentioned. Seemed obvious they would be way worse.

Disagree, Tkachuk has been more impactful this year than Huberdeau last. He scores more goals, plays a great two way game and is a pest, Huberdeau brought none of that.
Also the entire roster is under performing, that's on coaching. They've lost a lot of their offensive mojo under Maurice. The defense isn't that much worse without Weegar although they do miss his minute munching capabilities.

Its pretty tough to say that
Huberdeau had 30 goals, 115 points and was a plus 35 for them last season
Tkachuk is a +5...he will get more goals but likely less points
There is no way you can tell me Tkachuk is an upgrade on what Huberdeau/Weegar did for them last season...did you even watch them last year? Huberdeau was their leading scorer by a mile.
They will probably be 30 points worse this season...its not all the coach.
Huberdeau set an all time assists record there last year for a LW...ALL TIME! He had more primary assists than McDavid, I think you are downplaying how good he was there based on his year in Calgary thus far.

This year was always going to be a retool for them because of their cap situation. And they were expected to be worse although given how Huberdeau and Weegar have played this year I don't think the gap is that big compared to what Tkachuk is doing on his own. And the next seven years is where it is at for them obviously.
It's not all coaching, it's also been goaltending for them. But like Belichick said: good players can't overcome bad coaching and Maurice has been a horrible fit so far. Literally every player is playing worse than last year maybe with the exception of Forsling (and Tkachuk obviously). That's not coincidence.

Well now you are moving the goalposts a bit...you said Tkachuk more than replaced Huberdeau...his points and plus minus are worse though
losing an 85 assist player is certainly a factor in other players underperforming
I still think it was a puzzling move for them...they had the best team in the league, I would have taken a few shots with that. Now they are a bubble team with no high draft picks. How are they getting back to the top of the league? I don't think Tkachuk gets much better than this.

No way Huby would be putting up those numbers under Maurice. He probably would be underperforming like all the other former Panthers. That's why it's been even more impressive what Tkachuk has done so far, he hasn't gotten much help.
I personally would not have wanted to give eight year deals to Huberdeau and Weegar, even when they were still with the Panthers. Also Tampa has owned them for years now so they needed a shake up. Hiring Maurice was the real mistake imo.

well they got their shake up...to 10th or 11th place
Tampa won the presidents trophy and got swept in round one, they were smart enough to run it back
Most teams who are ridiculously good in the regular season have a bad playoff or two and then win it all, we will never know how it would have gone but I don't see how the Panthers get back to that level in the next 5 years or whatever. They have no draft capital, no cap.

any player that sets an all time assists/goals/points record for a player at his position obvious has something to bring to the table
it's virtually impossible to fluke your way into something like that
I think most are of the mind that huberdeau will settle back into his former ways next season, and is basically building himself back up to that this season in his new surroundings. it could also help not having a grinder on his opposite wing full time (as good a few games as looch has put together in the recent stretch).
I think the fact that Tkachuk was looking for the change, while Huberdeau had the change unexpectedly thrust upon him absolutely plays a role
probably a lot of mixed feelings suddenly getting shipped up here after his whole career in FLA. Tkachuk had moved on already. don't think there were any mental blocks for him

Its also easier to play in Florida
Tkachuk doesn't have an angry mob with pitchforks and 10 reporters after him for making a bad play in OT

I doubt Huberdeau gets back to the lofty point total’s considering the style that the Flames play. Maybe if Sutter gets the boot.

Huberdeau definitely is starting to feel a little like another high profile player we acquired from Florida more than a decade ago who had shown a strong offensive game but lost it completely once he started playing for a Sutter. When the Flames brought in Bouwmeester he was coming off 15 goals and 45pts. He became a shutdown average Dman in Calgary until Brent Sutter was replaced with Hartley and all of a sudden he was back to being a more dynamic player.
The Flames are more invested in Huberdeau than Sutter so I can definitely see them making a coaching change in a couple of years and Huberdeau explodes offensively again

Olli Jokinen didn't play for Darryl (was the GM) but there's definitely a history with offensive Panthers players flopping with the Flames.

Good point and to a similar extent Weegar’s offensive game is appearing to trend the same direction as Bouwmeester. Outside of some very noticeable errors with the puck he has been extremely solid defensively but the offensive game he showed in Florida has not translated to the Flames.

They have a ton of cap starting next year?
They are better off in the long run, that was the whole idea of not signing Huberdeau to an eight year deal. Huberdeau or Weegar weren't the reason why the Panthers had a great regular season last year, both have spent their whole careers there and the Panthers have been bad most of the time. It was coach Q and his systems / attitude which are unfortunately gone mostly now.

Are you asking if they have cap or saying they have cap?
The only players of any cap size expiring is Gudas and Hornqvist.

Yes but also Yandle's dead cap coming off the books. They have somewhere around 10-11 million cap space next year.
