A profile of the shooter begins to emerge . . . . . as is often the case, we may wonder how this guy wasn't flagged earlier.

If he's not an American citizen, how is it he's able to legally buy a gun in the United States?

An examination of media coverage yesterday:

I heard on the radio that he was naturalized or whatever its called? In that he has been living in the US since he was 8 or something. His sister apparently graduated from Princeton not too long ago, and his parent's run a drycleaning or laundry business or something like that?

And it starts... oh, and washingtonpost? um ya... Microsoft doesn't publish it.

While it's "reasonable to assume" one person carried out the shootings at Virginia Tech that killed 32 people on opposite ends of the campus, police say they are not ruling out the possibility that there was more than one gunman.

"The evidence has not led us to where we can say with all certainty that the same shooter was involved in both instances," Col. Steve Flaherty, superintendent of the Virginia State Police, told reporters Tuesday.

Oh great. They're probably going to re-examine the video game debate. The way they describe Counterstrike makes it sound like it's the most politically-incorrect, violent video game, when really it's the most popular multiplayer game in the world next to World of Warcraft (which by the way are pretty damn tame compared to other games out there)....

Well, let me tell you... if some crazy chick runs into a building and starts shooting at stuff but missing it all... you can totally blame me. I suck at FPS games. Seriously, how many millions of people play those games? How many become deranged killers? That they think at all that they can blame video games for this type of thing is totally wrong. Who hasn't played an FPS game in their life?

Taking out the politics while also admitting that I'm pretty good at Force Recon on PSP, here's some scientific evidence of a relationship between video games and violence:

I always have trouble shooting a real gun because I can't find the mouse for it. And all the guns I've tried must have been broken because they were missing the reticle. How am I supposed to aim with such crude mechanics?

Personally, I blame paintball. Now there's something that will actually get you ready for a mass killing.

Apparently there were red flags before the incident occurred. He was in counselling at VT after his English profs were worried he was writing about twisted massacres that were going to take place. This was reported by CNN.

In retrospect of course all these little things ad up. But what can you do? You can't lock someone up for writing crazy ramblings in essays or on myspace. And you can't force someone in to psychiatric care unless they show they are capable of harm to themselves or others or they commit a crime.

Oh I agree. You can plan all you want, but if someone wanted to do what the shooter did yesterday, sadly there isn't alot to prevent it. That in my mind is really scary. It just takes one person who has personal problems etc for a tragedy like this to occur. I can't fathom the mindset of these individuals who do things like this but I guess that's why i'm me and they are them. VT Campus is three times the size of Central Park. It's pretty hard to watch every square inch 24/7.

Hmmm. I play alot of BF2: Spec Ops, and I'm an expert with the G3 Assault rifle and the SVD sniper rifle, oh and there was lots of simulated bloodshed involved. Someone please, lock me up before I mistake my computer screen with my open front door.

Oh, did I forget to mention I have a university degree, a good job and no criminal convictions?

:S

I think issues like the one presented go a little bit deeper than video games, bu that's just me. They're an easy scapegoat, but there's more deep-rooted social issues to be analyzed here.

I don't like talking about the shooter as it's not about him but it's about the victims but there is new information being reported. Apparently he set a fire in his dorm, stalked women on campus and wrote essays abot a terrible massacre that was going to happen. Some of his fellow students had talked about the possibility if he could be a shooter.

Playing hockey on PS2 makes me more violent because I suck at it. It makes me angry. I'm liable to pull a Brad Richards and throw my controller/knock the controller out of my opponent's hand.

I'm afraid that I can't see there being enough controls in that particular experiment. I mean heck, there are violence 'genes' found in males... should we do DNA testing and make sure all those with the gene can't play such games? Did that experiment take into consideration upbringing and other factors? So people get agressive... isn't that a natural reaction when your desire is to win?

That's a link to two of the plays the shooter wrote.

That's what they write in University? Those are pretty crappy plays.

haha, im the same way...

Im not an angry person, but I blow through so many controllers because of that game.. I just can't stand it when you get a cheezer and you can't defend against it.. luckily, i'm really good at cheezing, so i can usually give it right back.. sometimes.. not so much.. and $30 later, i have a new controller. lol.
