The Swimmers was good - the first half is harrowing.

The strongest TIFF opener in years, harrowing and inspiring by turns. Sally El Hosaini’s real-life drama of Syrian sisters Yusra and Sarah Mardini, who fled civil war in pursuit of an Olympic swimming dream, was the fist-pumper we needed to get the festival party started. It’s also a potent drama of the global tragedy of refugees; an aerial shot of a beach littered with abandoned life jackets will take your breath away.
Glass Onion - just ok for me. I thought Peg did it because she had no other reason to be in the movie.

Good point. Without the hype I wouldn’t be nearly as harsh.

Babylon is a wildly uneven mess of a film. The first ten minutes of this 3+ hour movie feature an elephant opening its ####### to spew diarrhea into the camera and over its owner, a woman pissing on a guy's face and a crazy drug fueled orgy. After a while the cartoonish shock scenes just become tedious. It's a pity because there is some good stuff here but it's just tonally all over the place. Has a laughable unearned final scene too.

Sounds like the opening of the Motley Crüe film “The Dirt”

My favourite thing Aubrey Plaza has done were her two stints as host of the Film Independent Spirit Awards. She put more effort into her skits than most Oscar hosts.

Rewatched Signs yesterday, and IMO it's still a great film, and the 2nd best film from M.Night Shyamalan. Sixth Sense is obviously #1 , it's crazy the same person could make 6th Sense and Old

I think Signs is Shyamalan’s best work. Greatly overlooked. On the flip side, I actually think The Sixth Sense may be overrated as it’s too dependent on the twist.

I’ve always preferred Unbreakable personally. But M Night did used to make some decent flicks. It’s crazy he keeps getting films greenlit after The Happening. Dude should have been permanently barred from Hollywood after that debacle.

but then the masterpiece that is The Visit would've never been made

"Yahtzee!"

I liked Unbreakable way back when too. thought it was a fresh take on the superhero genre. but apparently it doesn't age well. watched it again with people prior to Glass and everyone that hadn't seen it were thoroughly unimpressed, and I could frankly see why. it's painfully slow but not in an interesting way, and pretty goofy at times. Shyamalan is a master at creating unrealistic interactions between characters and drawing out moments that do not earn it

I think overall signs and split are his best work. split works because his bizarre, unconventional dialogue meshes with a character who happens to be juggling 23 personalities. you actually expect the disjointed craziness

The new Hellraiser reboot is aggressively boring. How do you screw up razor chain wielding hell demons?

Yep it was a disappointment. The story was pretty stupid, acting bad, and in the original two movies Kirtsy was likeable while the characters in this one are totally annoying and unlikeable.

Yes trust me for what ever reason I was clear about 'the twist' about 15 minutes into the movie, the film was all but unwatchable from then on

As long as his movies keep bringing in 10-20x their budget at the box office, he'll keep getting them made no matter how bad they are.

Bullet Train was a fun ride. Humourous and packed with action--reminiscent of a Tarantino movie, but dialed up. My only complaint is that the movie took a bit too long to get going. Once it did though . . .

Definitely worth seeing.

I loved Babylon. It was absolutely incredible. The frenetic pacing. The excess. The music was incredible. Margot Robbie was amazing. I loved the incredibly elaborate set pieces. The first opening scene was madness. The scene with Tobey McGuire's character was one of the more memorable I have seen in a theatre in a long time.

It's about Hollywood in it's early primitive years, though not much different from today where it swallows up and spits people out. Essentially a foil to Chazelle's La La Land's ode to the sweetness and magic of Hollywood, where this is a nod to the dirty, grimy, insanity of it all. I thought it was highly original and incredibly ambitious. Give me more movies like this rather than green screened avengers multiverse tripe.

Seconding.

Bullet Train is an effective patchwork quilt of references to other films and pastiches of other directorial tricks. It's not high art, but entertaining and has a surprisingly excellent cast. Way better than I expected when my wife put it on over the weekend.

Watched it last night. Definitely a fun movie, but you really have to suspend logic and go along for the ride.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive talent was hilarious. A great way to spend some time.
