Default Tough question, please help!!!

Hey boyz(and girls), I'm in a bit of a sitchy and I need some help! Now that another school semester is behind me, I'm setting out today to do some applyin. Only I've got a problem: I started growing a playoff beard the day the playoffs started. It's not out of hand at all right now since it's been just under a week, just stubbly(think Miami Vice ), and Ive kept it off my neck and cheeks. It's at the point where the girlfriend doesn't even mind it still, so it ain't bad. But still, dropping off resumes with stubbly facial hair is of course not a desired idea. I've got almost black hair too, so my stubble's quite dark-looking, and therefore very noticeable.

It's only student summer work, no career-type jobs(I'd of course shave if that were the case). Although a few of the places I'm applying to are in retail(liquor stores), so I'm wondering if I should shave. So I ask you Flames fans, what should I do?? Do I dare shave off my playoff beard only two games into round 1?

Please reply promptly, I have to leave in about half an hour.

As if. Have you seen the calibre of emplyees in the city? There's shops that can't stay open because they don't have staff..... unruly employees with facial hair is the last of their worries.

Let 'er grow. If you have a pulse you'll have no problem getting work.

If it costs you a week's wages- is it worth $400 to keep it?

I have a whack of superstitions, but once money plays into it..........

I think you shave it. Once you've secured a job, you will know better whether or not a playoff beard is acceptable.

Ask for the manager... and be bold. Tell them that when you believe in a cause, such as the Flames, or the place you are applying at, you stop at nothing to do everything you can to help out. If it means growing a beard, so be it. Show drive and a want to be a part of the team...

If you're not ready to do that... shave. Your beard wont help the on ice product as much as the Flames wont help you get the job. What's more important? An improbable run, or a career?

With the labour market in the city, keep the face tickler.

That sounds great...only problem is I live in Edmonton. If I tell them I'm growing it for the Flames, they'll probably kick me out for sure.

btw thanks for all the great opinons guys! I was worried I would have 0 responses, 9 was a hell of alot more than I expected! It seems pretty divided in your opinons, almost 50/50. I'm leaving in about 15, I'm gonna make a game-time decision.

Shave it, even if there is a tight labor market, showing up looking like you don't give a crap about the interview is not going to give you the job.

Every one gets appraised on thier initial appearance, and coming in unshaved will get you negative points. Especially for retail.

You could just start applying on Friday.

You know what? I think I'm going to shave it. At first I wasnt planning on it, even after I started this thread. But the more I think about it, the more I think I should. When I lived in Calgary in 2004, the beard worked great. That was my first time ever growing out a playoff beard(the last time the Flames made the playoffs before that, I was too young to grow one), and look what happened.

But then I moved to Edmonton for school, and grew one for the 2006 playoffs. And what happened? Flames lose in the first round, and the Oilers march all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals(maybe it only works on the team residing in the city I live in?). And now here I am again with it, and the Flames are down 0-2 in the series, and have played arguably the two most one-sided games in playoff history. The beard ain't workin unless I live in Calgary.

...not that I'm supersticious or anything

Maybe you should have started awhile back on a magnificent mullet so that you could really give a great first impression.

Nah theyd probably just think I was Ryan Smyth, and hire me on the spot so I'd have to stay in Edmonton...but I'd probably have to break my nose about 12 times for that to work

Sainters7,

THIS is not a tough question. If you think this is tough, I feel sorry for you and the decisions you will have to make in the future. Frankly, YOU KNOW what the correct answer is. You obviously have a fair intelligence since you are in college or university.
Sorry, I don't mean to sound harsh, but this decision is just a pimple in your life and you really didn't need a dozen people telling you what was the correct thing to do.

I hope you find a job you really enjoy.
