We could have lost that in regulation in Markstrom doesnt make those saves on the breakaways.
Lose all momentum and put all the wind in their sails?
He's supposed to make those saves, its why he's there. I'd say on an average penalty shot its probably a 50/50 split between shooter and goalie.
On a breakaway the odds are a lot more nebulous, it could be more to the shooters favour depending on where he receives the puck, how much speed he gets and where the nearest defender is.
Or it could be far, far more in favour of the goalie because the shooter has to corral the puck, settle it, all at speed and still have enough room and wherewithal to make a play and get a shot off.
Either way though, the value of those saves from Markstrom cannot be overstated.
I've been as hard if not harder on Markstrom than most, but those saves were clutch.
I've been pretty hard on Markstrom this season but he has been his best the past couple of weeks since the Dallas series.
Flames are 6-3-1 the past 10 now. Prob the best stretch since the beginning of the season. and we got some pretty easy games coming up.

Markstrom was solid, he lets in either of those breakaways and it could have been a different game. A win is a win as they say and thankfully the Flames have been getting a lot of them recently.
The irony being Markstrom was the second best goaltender in that series. Oettinger was something stupid like .950.
The notion of second best goalie etc always seems a little forced to me. Goalies don’t play each other. They play the shooters from the other team. That’s who they have to beat. At the end of the day, Markstrom beat the shooters on the other team in one more game than Oettinger.

I think you are badly misremembering that series, but to each their own. Oettinger made like 100 more saves than Markstrom. Don't get me wrong Marky was great, but Oettinger was astounding.

Markstrom was phenomenal, really liked Zohorna and Rosie’s (Ruzicka) game as well, thought they played well with Lewis. Naz’s snipe was filthy! Great game, never felt the outcome was uncertain.

Mayfield and Aho look terrible tonight already eekkk

true but you could also just say it another way that we have never stopped sucking.. we are in a state of suckitude and this may be our reality for the next two seasons. We have arrived, but not where we hoped to.

a hot mess. even Butch has taken off his homer glasses the last few games.
Time to show some f***ing balls.. I guess our guys don't embarrass easy? I would be f***ing pissed off, time to stir something up.. either that or might as well throw in the towel now.

2020 all over again. Team falls apart without Pelech.

I had shades of that star wars line: "how we doing? That bad, huh?"
I am beginning to wonder how long LL allows this to continue, I don't dislike Lambert but the "lack of communication" Butch is referring to seems to be a veiled shot at the disorganized play/coaching weakness that is readily apparent. They keep doing the same wrong things over and over.

It’s ok everyone. This is all just a dream. Wake up and you’ll find it’s only 8:35pm. Dinner is setting in your stomachs. You have a nice cold beer on your lap and as far as you know Matt barzal is still in the game!

TY for F-ing us over, again Varly. Game should be 2-1 if we had an actual NHL goalie tonight.
Quote:
Name a better duo than Varlamov and giving up impossible angle goals
Hell of a shot though
Quote:
I’m not sure tonight was so much bad start as it was just poor puck management again which also plagues them from time to time. They are a team that really relys on playing everyone and the injuries have put them in spot where they can’t do that. Aho has been ok but he’s playing way to much, Dobson had awful trip, Romanov also as part of that pair also. We need Pelech to get back, Barzal hopefully isn’t hurting long term and Palmieri needs to get back. When Palmieri does return it’s interesting to see if Lane takes Baile or Beau out or if Fasching comes out.

Is there a more bland, boring and mediocre team in the NHL than the Calgary Flames? They have no prospects to get excited about, no superstars on their current roster to root for…just a collection of average NHLers content to get 42 wins a year and compete for a wild card position lmao
It warms my heart they’re too good for the Bedard sweepstakes but not good enough to go anywhere

You are missing the point. It doesn’t matter how great Oettinger was - it has no bearing on Markstrom’s play (and vice versa). Markstrom doesn’t have to be better than the other goalies. He has to be better than the players shooting at him. Whether he is better than the other goalie is 50% out of his control. And in that series there was nothing more he could do.

It was because of his play against us I chose Oettinger in this NHL box pool! Only 12 out of 120 participants chose him. $2800 1st place and I'm 3rd right now!!

This just prove again Oilers fans are beyond stupid. We have no prospects to get excited about? Are they talking about themselves? What prospect so they have? Dumb donkey is dumb!

To be fair they don’t get to see strategic hockey. The kind that is played to fit their roster. All they’ve see is the wonder boys at 35 minutes a night……and that’s been loaded with success

Meanwhile the Oilers would be bad enough for the Bedard sweepstakes if they weren't also bad enough for the McDavid sweepstakes. There's nothing more Edmonton than trying to chirp another team for being too good for the draft lottery.
