MacInnis, won the Conn Smythe for their only Stanley Cup.
Plus I know his wife Jackie.

How can a guy who wants nothing to do with the franchise and considers himself a Blue be on our Mount Rushmore? Vernon, Giordano, hell even Fleury are more deserving.

MacInnes was great, but he doesn't say 'Flames'.
For Mt Rushmore, I think it should be the people that define the franchise. For that reason, I get the Backlund argument, but he just hasn't accomplished enough, IMO.
I think it has to be Sutter.

Giordano for this round. Second in games played for the team, long term Captain (apparently irreplaceable), Norris winner. MacInnis deserves a nod for his Con Smythe and other accolades, but Giordano being the face for an era takes the cake

MacInnis quotes ...
“Although I live in St. Louis, my home away from home will always be here,”
MacInnis won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP when Calgary won the Stanley Cup in 1989.
“It was the pinnacle of my career and it will always hold a huge part in my career and obviously a huge part in my heart,”MacInnis said.
“I was fortunate enough to play with two great organizations and this night is very, very special for a number of reasons,”MacInnis said.“The Calgary Flames gave me a chance to play in the National Hockey League. They showed patience in a young defenceman for years that needed to develop and needed work.”
“It was the people of Calgary who welcomed me to the NHL, who made me proud to be a Flame,”
Yeah he hates all of us, the city ... the jersey, the team, the country ...

Growing up, there were not a lot of games on local TV, and on radio listened to my local broadcast.
Probably rare a 10 year old kid in Calgary knew of Rod Phillips in the 80's.
I knew of him in later years, of course.
Show his picture and give his name to 1000 hockey fans across North America, and you'd probably be hard pressed to have more than a couple look at it and associate him with the Calgary Flames. Same with Rod Phillips and the oilers.
I just don't see an announcer as "Mount Rushmore" representation for a team.

That may be, but compare that to someone like Sutter, who went to LA and won cups there but chose to come back to the Flames for some unfinished business with this organization, whose home is in the area, and who has been the driving personality behind forging the team's identity for much of the last twenty years.
I respect what MacInnis did as a player, but in a vote between him and Sutter I don't feel much hesitation in voting Sutter.

I think it's pretty simple...he actualized his life as an adult in St Louis - raising his kids there, and continues to be a part of that organization. Calgary was just a different stage of his life.
Frankly it would be weird if he didn't identify more as a Blue at this point.

That was on his Forever a Flame night, right? Did he not say that he did not want his number retired as a Flame? I don't ever hear him talking about being a Flame other than that night. I am not saying he hates the Flames or Calgary. I am just questioning whether he belongs on the team's Mount Rushmore and I do not believe so, but I seem to be in the minority. Loved the player, loved the slap shot, seems like a nice guy as well.
Not everyone on here is negative for the sake of being negative Bingo, LOL.

Yeah, I don't think it's fair to say that MacInnis doesn't want anything to do with Calgary or the Flames. He did play in an alumni game after all, even when he was employed by the Blues.
It's just that he spent more than 600 games with the Blues and is entrenched in the lore of their franchise as much as the Flames. For me at least, in order to be considered a face of the franchise, the association to that one team should be obvious to everyone across the NHL. I think a lot of people outside of Calgary think of MacInnis being a Blue first when they think of him.
Still one of my favourite Flames of all time. The Flames were losing stars like crazy at that time, but he was one that didn't seem like he wanted to leave. When he was traded, it was really the event that marked the end of an era.

For me it's less a traitor thing but more a couple ways of thinking about it
- If you say the name Al MacInnis to most hockey fans, would they think of him immediately as a Blue or Flame
- If he's on the Blues Mt. Rushmore can he also be on the Flames. My initial reaction is no. But then I think there are other examples where they player would be on both. But not a ton. Gretzky would be on the Kings and Oilers Mt. Rushmore. Bourque would maybe be on both the Bruins and Avs (though I would disagree with that). There's probably others but I'm struggling to come up with them.
So that's why I didn't vote for him.
A Flames D Mt. Rushmore is also fun to think of:
Macinnis, Suter, Gio: Slam dunks.
The 4th is trickier: for me it's Reinhart or Macoun. But you could actually make a pretty good argument for TJ Brodie.
These are fun exercises.

Who said that?
Just pointing out the guy hasn't actually thrown the Flames or Calgary under the bus at any time.
He got traded.
Happens to 99% of players that play here.
Also remember him saying to the Calgary guys on the 2002 olympic team that he was jealous that they were going back to Calgary with gold medals to celebrate.

Didn’t CP do an all time Flames lineup at some point? 4 lines, 3 pairings and two goalies?

How bad is it for the Blues that Macinnis is on their Rushmore and his only Cup is with us. Ha ha Blues.
It’s why Lanny is a Flame and not a Leaf. He won it here.
