I've decided to go players only, suspect that is where the vote will fall
(a non player Rushmore might be a fun 2nd game- I'd be hard pressed between Cliff, Badger, Sutter, Bearcat, Maher, Whelan and Hotchkiss)
anyways I've already made my thoughts known on MacInnis- controversial opinion I don't expect anyone else to share but in terms of on ice performance with the Flames I think the gap is narrower between MacInnis and Iggy than it is between MacInnis and the next tier

Chopper here for me and honestly it should be a no brainer.
Conn Smyth Trophy, 5th all time in games played, 3rd in points, over a PPG as a defenseman in the regular season and playoffs.
37th in the Athletics top 100 - https://theathletic.com/3935794/2022...9-al-macinnis/ (Iggy was 34th - so shows how close those two are in terms of legacy and impact).
IMO he didn't leave on as bad terms as others either. He signed an RFA offer sheet and the Flames decided not to match and worked out a trade. Sucks but really it was just an issue of being a small market team at the time.
Based on just on-ice performance for the team he's the second best Flame of all time, slightly behind Iggy and ahead of Fleury and Giordano.

I am not understanding why Kipper would be voted higher than Chopper and Fleury here. You could easily argue Vernon was a more iconic goalie for the Flames than Kipper ever was. I think this shows that the majority of voting here has nothing to with what the player accomplished for the Calgary Flames as a much as personal popularity contest.

Has nothing to do with what they accomplished?
TIL Kipper never accomplished anything.

I never said he didn't accomplish anything but he certainly didn't accomplish more than MacInnis, Fleury, or even Vernon as a Flame. As Bingo said, people can vote how they want but I am just saying the results suggest this is a popularity contest, for the majority, it really has nothing to do with the actual contributions to the Calgary Flames.

Mike Vernon is criminally underrated. I voted for him, but for me it is a three horse race for the last three spots between Kiprusoff, Giordano and Vernon and I think the first two will get the vote.
Fleury should have been on there for his play, but I can't vote for that asshat!

I wouldn't say it's a popularity contest but I'm sure eras come into it and age.
And that's fair in my mind.
Being old like me gives you access to the entire history with memories, which probably slants me more to the 80s Flames for nostalgic reasons that aren't fair to more recent players.

Fletcher for me as he was the architect of the franchise's glory years and cup win. Without Fletcher there is no cup IMO.
Yes, he scr@wed the Flames over in the Gilmour trade but he delivered a cup and the best era of Flames hockey to date.

Eras and ages are for sure a real thing with voting here.
I myself wasn’t born yet when Lanny lifted the Stanley Cup for the Flames.
But I can certainly appreciate what he has done for the Flames, for the HOF, and continues to do in the community.
He was my second vote after Iggy.

I look at that list and die a little inside seeing how many great players/coaches/managers moved on and are arguably better identified by their post-Calgary careers.

Also makes me think of how Johnny coulda been one of the all-time franchise greats. But chose a disaster Columbus team.

Part of it is a popularity contest and I’m OK with that. Every kid in Calgary probably wanted a Fleury jersey at some point. And then Iginla and then Gaudreau. That counts for something IMO.
When I think of the Flames over the years who first comes to mind? That’s a big part of the criteria for me. Arguably there is a Lanny era, Fleury era and then an Iginla era.
You’d be right in pointing out Lanny was a marginal player in that Cup team. But as a kid who was at the parade and ceremony, make no mistake that Lanny was by far the most popular player and quite the focal point.

these are good points. I'm not saying he should be on Rushmore, but Joey Mullen was a really famous and popular name around town during the cup 'era' on either side of 89 (well mostly the run up I guess)

Fletcher makes sense to me too. I think my choices might be something like Iggy, Lanny, Sutter, Fletcher, and either Whalen or Maher. All to me are iconic in their own ways in Flames history.

I'm surprised it hasn't already been suggested, but you could have Iginla, McDonald, MacInnis, and Kiprusoff for the Mount Rushmore Monument, and then Fleury for the Crazy Horse Monument.

MacInnis appears to be up there on the all time forum misspelling list with the likes of Hanifin, Bouwmeester, McElhinney, and Cammalleri. That has to count for something.
