Before I answer, extended from what?
When does his current contract end?
If he has at least a couple years left, then no. If he's on his final year? I'd give him maybe another 2-3?
He should be around at least for the end or near-end of the window that he created.

I believe this is the final year of his contract. Which makes the Sutter extension when the GM hasn't been extended sort of curious.

I think it depends on if they make the playoffs this year, and their off-season success or lack thereof.
When I compare Treliving to his predecessor(Feaster) he is the much better GM. He is significantly better at trading, and signing players. I would argue he is a better drafter, but has a slightly worse record at signing free agents, and much worse record at picking coaches.
That said, I think Treliving has a lot he can improve on. The Flames haven't been drafting enough in his tenure, and the Flames became one of the oldest teams in the league. I'm glad we were able to pick up some quality young players like Vladar, and Zohorna from other teams, but our top draft picks don't seem to make the team(Sutter effect).
Let's face it we were in a terrible spot this off-season. Treliving managed to stir clear of the nearest iceberg, but he might have just signed us up for an 8-9 year window of mediocrity. I guess at the end of the day it depends on the amount of blame you assign Tre. I would love to have an upgrade at the position, but change for the sake of change doesn't seem that appetizing, especially once I look at all the EDM GM changes, or the mess VAN is in.

I wonder if he's grown tired of ownership and wants to test the waters. His results have been mixed but I think he's pretty well regarded around the league because of how hard he works. I also wonder if his results would be better with more hands off ownership.

I have no idea how this season is going to go. I have mixed feelings about BT, but I think his early mistakes won't be repeated.
What I do know- Is I hate the idea of a GM having no contract at the trade deadline. I really don't want to see a all in sell the farm trade of a desperate GM.

I think the owners want BT to stay on long term and wonder if he may be moving to an upper position to make room for someone to take his spot.

I feel like BT is better than what we could potentially end up with. Ownership needs to let the guy rebuild.

I doubt they rebuild until shovels are in the ground for a new building.

Well if the alternative is Sutter I think he should stay 100%.

I'm indifferent. He's probably top 15 in the league. Helped the team go from bottom feeder to contender and back down to mediocre. Low balled our franchise player into playing his last season here without an extention. Made 3 very poor coaching hires and generally overspends in free agency. For those reasons I wouldn't be sad if him and the flames parted ways, but would also welcome him back as he is at least adequate at building a good team

Average gm with average, at best, playoff success during his tenure. Has done some good signings but also some head scratchers. UFA deals have been on the poor side. But, we're a small Canadian market so who knows if we can get someone better. And, if ownership forbids a rebuild then any GM's hands will be tied.
I'd guess, unless he wants to test the waters, he'll get an extension.

No. I really commend him on swinging for the fences with the situation we were put in with JG leaving and MT announcing he wasn't going to stay long term. But he seems to follow up smart choices with dumb ones quite often. Extending Sutter before they had any time with his shiny new toys was a major miscalculation. Now we have a high paid coach for 2.5 more years that our incoming players dont seem to jive with and we are at best a middle of the pack team so far when with the roster we have on paper this should be a team in the running for the division/conference.
I dont buy the "we dont have enough skill" BS. Huberdeau set their assist record for a LW last year on a second line. Kadri was at one point in the lead for points mid season last year before injury. Weegar stepped up HUGE when Ekblad went down last season on the presidents trophy winning team. Unless we are the unluckiest franchise ever acquiring all 3 of these guys on the exact year their downtrends all began there is something more to it.
I think the realization Sutter isn't the fit for this roster will happen soon, and it will also mean the end of Treliving. Who despite me feeling like he needs to move on, I will always respect his willingness to swing for the fences when cornered. I just wish he had better long term plans for the team rather then knee jerk reactions when situations get dire. We never make moves ahead of an issue, always when the issue can't be ignored anymore. That's not a good GM to me, even if you pull rabbits out of the hat from time to time.

Reason: put Barkov instead of Ekblad originally

Yes he does.
If they let him leave and do what they did when Sutter was fired the options are scary. Sutter 2.0 at GM, Don Maloney, Bob Murray.

I lean towards yes, unless there is someone being considered who would certainly be an upgrade. I don't know who that person would be though, and we could do a lot worse than Treliving, even if he had his fair share of misses too.
I think he eventually gets extended though. If the owners thought he was heading out the door, I don't think they would have let him extend the coach beyond a year. A new GM will probably want to bring in his own guys. Unless the person targeted was already approached and wants Sutter. Or unless that guy IS Sutter, lol.
To be honest, I don't think Sutter was as terrible of a GM as most. It's just that Phaneuf trade... woof.

As a pretty harsh critic, I have definitely come around.
I'd like him to be extended to see this generation of the team before the next rebuild is upon us.

I think yes. He has proved he can handle high pressure situations and come out looking good. He handled the Peters fiasco as well as he could have and he was extremely impressive this summer when he made all the major moves.
As far as this franchise has gone under him it has to be one of the better eras of the team (not saying that much). 2 division banners, 2 trips to the second round, decent draft record, impressive blockbuster trades.
If he wants to stay I say we keep him.

It’s very weird to have a lame duck GM heading into the trade deadline
It lends credence to the thought process it’s BT who may be looking to leave / has already informed the team this will be his last season
