If enough republicans left the house could the democrats accidentally elect the speaker? Or would there just be an immediate vote to replace him so it wouldn’t matter.?

There's been a lot of talk about one of McCarthy's concessions being allowing what amounts to initiating a non-confidence vote in his speakership with only a few or one vote rather than the majority so they must have some power in terms of setting the rules for the session, though maybe those rules would have to be voted on too..
But yeah I was wondering the same thing, if Dems voted in a speaker could R's just vote him out and put everything back at square one?
But without a speaker reps can't even be sworn in so yeah until they get one basically nothing else can happen.
Had been reading reports that McCarthy already moved into the speaker's offices which is pretty bold, Gatez sent this letter today apparently lol.

I believe it takes more than a simple majority to initiate a vote of I what I assume is called a vote of 'no confidence' so no not that simple

Former congressman Jason Chaffetz says on Fox the never-Kevin bunch intend to nominate a series of alternatives now.
Cmon Dems, cut a deal!

McCarthy lost another vote this round, with Spartz (Indiana) going "present". I just don't see how and when this madness ends.

I guess even the non-Trump Republicans have decided to keep undermining public faith in democracy as a functioning system.

This is a very good overview of how the GOP got to this point, and a particular breakdown of how/why McCarthy is pretty well ####ed.

The Republican party is nothing more than a clown show when it comes to electing a speaker of the house

OK, I just turned this on, and I am amazed they do a roll call type vote, writing them down as they go. These people have heard of computers, right? The could get through votes in 10 seconds. What an archaic country.

it's the way the daddies intented it to be, and if I've learned anything from US politics, it's that you can never go against the daddies.

Not much different than the House of Commons in Canada when they vote on things with the exception that MPs stand in support or stay seated in opposition. They do also have electronic voting because of the new hybrid Parliamentary system for MPs who are attending the session remotely.

This is what happens when a party is beholden to whack-a-doos and their psychotic, frenetic whims and just cater to the very lowest denominator all the time. This is the result.
