People keep saying he was entertaining, one of the best Flames ever which is all true; but how he left surely is part of the equation too, it would be in any other profession.
I don't see how the organization would be any less professional for not giving tribute to a former employee who left under bad terms.
I guess it has become a hockey thing with mandatory fake tributes pretending you want to honor someone everyone knows you really don't.

He left after he was out of a contract, he did exactly as he was entitled to do as a pending UFA. He did nothing to breach an existing contract with the Flames. They took the risk of having him get to UFA, and he did. Yes he was conflicted about his decision and apparently changed course last minute, but it's not like he stepped out on a signed contract or something. Flames owners are shrewd business men, they know how contracts work. He will get a tribute because he was the best player on the team for many years, and he deserves it. There's absolutely no way an organization like the Flames snubs him of a tribute. No chance. I would be highly disappointed if they did.
I fully acknowledge he's going to get boo'd as well, but I still think many people are overplaying the idea that Gaudreau somehow screwed the team. He did nothing of the sort. A pending UFA has all the leverage and he used it. That's how it works. He made a really silly decision IMO, but that's a different story.

No, he got a contract and compensation because he was the best player on the team for many years, that is what he deserved.
Gaudreau played out his contract and was paid well for it. He's a highly paid professional and knows how contracts work.
He was compensated fully for his time as a Flame and is not owed anything further by the organization.
There was no clause in his contract saying he'd get a video tribute.
You're trying to have it both ways. If it's all business, he has been paid and is not entitled to a video tribute bonus.
If you wanna be all business, be all business both ways. Gaudreau did his obligations and so did the Flames.
You're now expecting something extra to be done by the organization and saying you'll be highly disappointed if it's not.
I am not expecting any extra to be done by Gaudreau.

Why is there no "neither, will actively not care about this player" option?

Yes agreed, Gaudreau will definitely get a video tribute, even Tyler Toffoli received a video tribute from the Canadiens organization despite only playing 89 games for them and less than half of them were in front of fans.
I'm also 100% with you on your take. Management let him get to free agency which was always risky based on the potential flight risk. The team should've signed him back in 2021 when he was more than willing to and they failed to do so. That's more of a failure on their part by not recognizing the potential risks and pitfalls. I still believe that the reason why Calgary was even in the mix until the end was because of Johnny, but I don't think anyone else in his camp was too interested in coming back.
In the end, he'll get booed deservingly or undeservingly, but that doesn't change the fact that he left a huge footprint (figuratively) in the history of this organization and it deserves recognition for himself, the staff and his fans. I also think over time, once the wound heals and isn't so fresh, fans will ultimately remember the good things he did for this franchise.

So management should have signed him to a 11 million contract after he looked like he was worth a 1st round pick and a B. Prospect?
Was he going to even sign? We can't force him to sign. People keep saying we should have signed him in the offseason well he has to agree to the contract, and if the flames overpaid to keep him after two forgettable seasons people would have been irate.
Johnny screwed the team in the end and walked. He isn't some hero returning to Calgary he really did nothing for the franchise or city that left a lasting legacy.

Where’d you come up with that number? Why don’t we use $15M then if we’re just making up numbers.
Also, I thought Gaudreau looked great for most of the 2021 season minus that stretch when Darryl first took over where he stuck him with Monahan and Ritchie. So if it was me, I would’ve signed him to something more than fair which is what Jane Gaudreau confirmed in a recent interview where she stated that Johnny would’ve re-signed to anything close to his target amount.
I know for myself, I expected a big 100+ point season out of him in the 21-22 season with the way he, Lindholm and Tkachuk finished. So I would not have been “irate” with a contract extension, I was openly pushing for one that offseason.
Lastly, Gaudreau didn’t screw the team over, he was a UFA, so he owed the team nothing. I blame management more so on not getting it done when they had a chance. It’s their job to assess risk, sign the players and build a desirable situation for players. Although the last part of this statement probably applies more to Tkachuk than Gaudreau.

There is. It’s called not voting. But that can’t be you because you’re in here talking about it so you obviously do care.

Johnny had 99 pts in 2018/2019. From the start of the season until the end of January he scored 73pts in 51 games which had him pacing for 117pts over the full season. He gets 26pts in his final 31 games and follows that up with 58pts in 70 games and 49pts in 56 games which works out to 133pts in 157 games or an average of 69pts per 82 games. That production was for nearly two and a half seasons so when those conversations are happening are the Flames even considering going $9.5M for 8 years? Johnny was always dynamic offensively but had a reputation of being pushed around in the playoffs and being a liability defensively.
Is it really a huge failure after watching him for 7 years to not think he was going to put it together for a full 82 games and score 115pts while flashing a 2 way game we had never seen before under any coach before Darryl? Johnny earned what the Flames offered him but had he got $9.5x8 or more after scoring at a 69 point pace for 2.5 years I think a lot of people would have ripped that contract apart at the time.

Lol I'm sure you thought he was going to get a 100 points might have been the only one. They ended the covid season on a tear by piling up points in meaningless games vs the Canucks.
He was terrible that season and the season prior to that. He also vanished in 18/19 season down the stretch and playoffs.
His family also said if we offered him the same deal he would have signed and of course he would have who wouldn't take 11 million after 3 underwhelming seasons no one knew what the cap would look like.
He screwed us until the last second when he knew all along he was not going to come back.

honestly even though we're not really playing the best, I think this team would be a better playoff team than the last, so I'm not as rattled. This would be a different conversation if Hubey was firing on all cylinders.
Hopefully he catches his stride and we'll all end up being happy with how things unfolded.

Do you remember that reception? It was one of the craziest return reactions in sporting history. The guy didn't even make it into warm up without being mercilessly booed, along with a whole playbook of jeers and slogans throughout the game. Gaudreau will be similar to Tkachuk with likely a little more booing during the tribute and a lot more booing when he touches the puck.

Yeah that was wild! My dad's a diehard Islanders fan so it was extra fun. Agreed it won't be anything near as intense as Tavares. Johnny actually did us worse, so it certainly has reason to be (Tavares at least went to his childhood team he always dreamed about playing for. Johnny seemed like he was desperately trying to go ANYWHERE else), but Calgary just isn't that type of market I find, the same hatred energy level isn't there like on the U.S. east coast.
I definitely think Johnny will get it worse than Tkachuk, and deservedly so. But I still think it won't approach anything close to the hostility Tavares felt. But I'll certainly be booing from my living room just off the Red Mile (after enjoying the tribute he'll surely have).

Not a fan of booing a player who left when it was their right to do so, and played well for us while he was here. Ok with booing a guy like James Neal all day though.
Respect that other people have their own thoughts and that I can't control their actions...but I wish we wouldn't boo him like I know we will.

I voted for booing, not because he left but because he is playing for an opposing team who I will boo.

Boohoo. The dweeb wanted to go closer to home and he didn't. He is still pretty far from home.
Like he chose an AHL club over the Devils and Islanders?? and us?
He has the highest hockey IQ in the world.. too bad it's not very high on the other side.

Fact of the matter is the guy played out his contract, and played well. He was entitled to make whatever choice he wanted and not obligated to remain here at all. You can whine about the choice he made, and speculate as to why he made it but that isn't going to be informed speculation as you aren't privy to all the factors he may have considered.
I wish he would have made up his mind a bit sooner and allowed the flames to plan as much as they could have, but the flames could have also locked him down earlier etc. It is a nuanced process, and strange to get very worked up over a guy playing within the rules.

Not the point of the post but I really can't fathom being as close with my family as the Gaudreaus are.
