NHL. Never Hungry League.

The way Warrener talks about it, it sounds like the players couldn’t really ask for more. As far as I know, he has never differentiated the Flames from his other two teams as far as treatment to the players go.

Interesting predictions, Treliving moving on to take over the Leafs, Sutter getting personnel control and Treliving making one last trade this year to try to position the Flames for a run.
Yuck. Pretty much worst case scenario in my eyes. Sutter’s player assessment is abhorrent and out-dated. I hope his impact is limited to coaching the team, full-stop.

The Flames put Gaudreau’s family up at a Super 8? Is there some confirmation of this?

After Franklin, who was coasting along here asking the most cliched questions, sometimes twice, for a long long time, I am sure TSN wanted to try and upset the apple cart by inserting a guy willing to stir up crap. He will do it to advance his career and with no ties to the Flames (and an Oilers fan) he has nothing to lose.

There is no TSN Radio here like other markets so TSN doesn't really care about the relationship with the team, and just happy it will get more clicks on the website.

One thing for certain is that the beat writers, certainly here, know a lot more of the day to day and drama behind the scenes with the team than any of us. Now, not everything is known as many things are still guarded by the organization wh protect their players from the media more than many franchises (it's actually a selling point) None of that juicy stuff gets out though, as it would be denied right away and any reporter releasing it would be career suicide.

But a guy like Valji and Francis when feeling a bit vidictive becuase they have been shut down on something, have no problem at hinting at some things going on or making something up, but not for the public, more to show those in the organization that they know what they know and have the power to cause a stir with the info they have.

Why would the Flames be obligated to put Gaudreau’s family up in a hotel anyway? Wouldn’t, you know, the Gaudreau’s take care of that?

If NHL teams are footing the bill for family visits, this would be the first I’ve heard of it.

I could see teams covering the cost of mothers and fathers trips but beyond that, the players and their families should be on their own. These people aren’t foreign dignitaries.

So, fair enough - but “should” is irrelevant.

If one team treats players better than the other and does stuff like putting up the family, then that’s a point in favour of that organization over the ones that don’t do that.

It’s competition. It’s why the Leafs don’t give a #%^* about getting fined $100K if it feels it out them in a better position to win the following game. Every edge matters.

Probably not worth much discussion because we will likely never know which team does what but it seems awfully complicated for the teams, if any, that would do this and even if they do, does it matter?

Let’s just say the Oilers do, as an example. Are they flying the McDavid’s out and putting them up at the Fairmont or the JP Marriott every time they come out? Do they do the same for the Draisaitl’s? What about Derek Ryan’s family? What about the Kulak’s? Do they get the same treatment? If they don’t, do the Ryan’s and Kulak’s feel a little disrespected? How does that work for team building?

Frankly, I doubt there’s any truth to this claim that the Flames, gasp, only put the Gaudreaus up in a super 8. And even if they did, are Jane and Guy that put off by it? If I’m not mistaken, they didn’t have a ton of money before Johnny became a pro hockey player. They probably have stayed in their fair share of Super 8 like hotels driving Johnny to hockey tournaments growing up.

Gross. I can't handle Sutter being the GM again.

Treliving gone would be a blow for the Flames. I haven't loved everything he has done, I was pretty critical of him early on, and he hasn't had the results that would be ideal, but he's good at his job.

How many GMs would be available that would be more capable than him?

Also, a change of GM is something that makes sense when you want to change direction of the team in the big picture, but the Flames are locked into their big picture plans right now to compete for the cup. I don't see another great GM coming in to just follow on Treliving's plans. Sutter might, but he doesn't have Treliving's skill set as a GM.

The management picture for the Flames right now is about as good as we could hope for between Treliving as GM and Sutter as coach.

We know that autonomy is important to Tree, so if he's getting either too much involvement from the owners or too much from the coach, I can see him wanting to move on.
And if he does, I think he will have ample opportunity.
Would be a blow for sure.

Wouldn’t surprise me if they hired someone really tight with Sutter like Lombardi.

Sutter returning as GM would be terrible but I don’t think he wants it. I could see a scenario where Mike Futa gets his first gig as GM as he and Sutter were together in LA. Dean Lombardi is the other guy I could see if they decide to move on from Brad while keeping Darryl.

What Treliving pulled off last summer guaranteed him another job very quickly if he moved on from the Flames. The media out east anointed him an elite GM when those moves went down after Johnny left and Chucky asked out.

I agree and I think this is why Salim's prediction will not come to pass. Treliving has done well and there is still unfinished business. Unless his talk of the Calgary market after JG and MT left was BS, I think he will be back.

I'd be disappointed if Treliving leaves. He made huge mistakes on coaching that basically wasted the last rebuild though. I just like to believe he is introspective enough not to replicate previous mistakes. He would be a pretty good fit in Toronto given his philosophy and general demeanor.

I really hate to think where Calgary would go next with a hire. Thankfully they had the awareness to bring in Burke last time after the tire fire Feaster era, but Sutter ain't it for personnel decisions and building a pipeline. Don't get too attached to those second round picks.

I don't follow the Leafs closely enough to know their organizational management and culture, but would he be likely to find autonomy there in a top role? I've no doubt he could find autonomy somewhere in the league based on what he's shown with the Flames, but less confident he would get it in a bigger and more high-status organization than where he is now

Have you seen Mike Futa talk? There is no chance that guy gets a GM job. Long speculated in the late 2000's and interviewed for so many jobs, but pretty clear why it never happened for him.

Sutter returning as GM would be a disaster (and what I was afraid of when he was hired). We don't need to relive that again.

I highly doubt Sutter becomes GM...seems like clickbait to get people stirred up.

Didn't the Flames charter a plane for the Gaudreau's when he first signed? Also 10.5Mx8 could have covered hotel stays. Flames need to pay more for every UFA or UFA extension they do...cheap seems unlikely.

The dude has an opinion like anyone else.

The disdian he has for both because they don't grant him interviews and other team juicy tidbits is likely driving this clickbait.

The Leafs GM role is one the premier in the league, so if someone around the league in passing (Burke) mentioned that Treliving would be good fit for that role, in theory, Valji runs with it, being able to paint a narrative of Sutter forcing Treliving's hand etc etc and then can play off of this all and the subsequent (non existent) organizational drama to use for future columns.
