Thanks for the responses guys.
One last question, I noticed Alberta ebike regulations state you can't have a motor over 500w. This may be a dumb question, but is that something that is strictly enforced? Like if I get a 750w motor will I be public enemy number one with enforcement or the bike community?
Thanks again.

Been ebiking for three or four years and I've never been stopped for a motor check. Also, the 750w hub motor I have was basically a plug and play into my 500w housing so it wouldn't jump out at you at all. I think it's a pretty safe upgrade.

#1: Pedal assist stops at around 35. There's no help. Motor stops running. So if you want to sustain >= 35, that's all on you. Getting to 35, the motor can help you.
#2: I get passed by people on regular road bikes even when I go 35. Like they blow right by me.

Your underestimating . Some Group rides can maintain 40kms plus. Before my knee injury I could average 38 kms for quite some time . My fastest sprints were 48 kms an hour .
Most that can do #### like this tho are definitely enthusiasts.
Now that I'm not on flats like Victoria and moved to Nanaimo I'll be going back to an ebike more or less full time. Knees absolutely fine on flat and being able to out put high power but once I hit some hills the knee gives out to the point I cant walk on it. I've had to many crashes and my body is not recovering from them .

I am making a general claim about what a good number of road bikers might average on a 5k flat with no wind involved. And I said the more advanced riders would be quite a bit above that. Obviously there are plenty of times when any level will be able to go considerably above 30. I averaged around 50 on a 10k stretch on hwy8 a few weeks ago when i turned and had a crazy wind at my back. And ya, an advanced road rider will be averaging awesome speeds even without wind. Some of these guys are pretty darn good.

Thanks for the responses.
One last question: is finding service difficult? Will any bike shop repair them?

Thanks Chemgear!
That's actually a phenomenal deal. The bikes are an extra 50% off once in your cart, so the rear hub one is actually just over $500 and the mid drive is just under $800.
You could sell the parts for way more than that.
Edit: referring to the Quest bikes above

It’s the basic one. Figured I couldn’t go wrong for that price.
Do your own investigation though. It’s not the strongest motor out there.
Yes, it’s a peddle assist bike but if you get real lazy you can just turn up the juice. Ha!

We are so fortunate to have so many great places to ride in Calgary and surrounding areas. One thing I read that I find interesting about ebikes is that they are “Climate change proof”as you can easily change your tires depending on what the weather and trail conditions are like.

I would get a straight bike if you want to lose weight, an e bike is like putting a gym in McDonalds

F'ing ebikes. Guys with jeans flying by you uphill without giving an audible or ringing a bell, awesome. Pretty soon the city will have someone monitoring the pathways handing out "speeding" tickets to everyone.

I must disagree with you. Evidence shows that those with an eBike ride more often and further. It’s also good for getting your heart rate into an aerobic zone rather than spiking or going into an anaerobic one.
Plus it helps remove the excuses like when it’s windy. Wind is the most soul sucking thing to ride into and riding an eBike is like riding with a tailwind that you can control.

I ended up getting two of them. One for me and one for my wife.
Can't wait to try it out in a couple months. LOL

I know someone that's been slapped with a $400 bike speeding ticket .. it's already happening
you got a problem with jeans? this is alberta after all
jeans > dumbass skin tight spandex
hopefully ebikers provide even a fraction of the annoyance to regular cyclists as cyclists do to drivers
taste of their own medicine

Why would you cheer for a chosen transport method to be annoying to another? Did you have to move over a meter once to go around a cyclist? Did it slow you down by 8 seconds? Or do you just pass as closely as possible because your ego is fragile?

Meh, I get passed by lycra clad Tour de France wannabe's all the time without a bell or call out. Funny enough those champions of the pathways seem to disappear from them this time of year and hide in their basements on zwift or some such nonsense.

Can't we all (cyclists) just get along? Everyone rides for different reasons. No need to be snippy or condescending to people who ride for reasons other than your own. Didn't your mother teach you that it's actually easier to not say anything at all, than to be jerk?
