Sorry if already posted. Stan Fischler had similar sentiments in a piece posted in the THN yesterday.

I love reading Sportsnet’s Mark Spector, especially since he’s a no-nonsense journalist. But the other day, Spector wrote something that I felt I should – in all fairness – challenge. He called Connor McDavid “The Best Player in the World.”
Of course, that’s easy to say, especially since a lot of people agree with that assessment – but that doesn’t mean that they’re right.
Frankly, they are not.
What McDavid happens to be is the most spectacular player, which is not nearly the same as being the best.

Idiotic take, frankly, however much you dislike the Oilers and McDavid. The argument is basically he hasn't won a cup and his plus minus is bad - he's not a "winner". We've heard the same tired garbage for so long it is honestly painful to see it again. His editor should have rejected that and said "we are simply not paying for this trash. Write an actual piece, not something you copied and pasted from an article about Steve Yzerman written in 1994."

Spector a no-nonsense journalist?
Sorry, that's a typo... it should say, "Spector? No. A nonsense journalist."

I believe McDavid is the best one dimensional offensive player in the world but that’s not the same as best player in the world that has leadership intangibles and gets it done at both ends of the ice and has won championships.

I read the article as he doesnt really act as a "leader" for his team and doesn't play a full 200-ft game, the type of game required to win Cups. Which is why he picked Robertson over McDavid currently when Robertson doesn't have a Cup either. It's not well-written either way.

Steve Yzerman was McDavid until he committed to playing a team game. McDavid has yet to commit to being a leader and playing the right way. Perfectly valid IMO.

It's almost comical. Watch Lindholm and Backlund in our end and then watch McDavid. McDavid either IS floating high OR just does not "get" when he needs to be that "3rd defender" in front of his own net.
Backlund and Lindholm are so effective in our end and the difference from McDavids backchecking is stark.

Great offensive talent, best in the league. Deeply flawed defensively, integrity, and leadership. The guy is a great talent, but he isn’t the best player in the game. Why does this upset Oilers fans so much?

I love reading Sportsnet’s Mark Spector nonsense, especially since he’s a no journalist.

I think one day he may become the best overall player like Crosby has been but that won’t likely be until his post-Oilers years. That organization is so deeply flawed there’s not a single player that can rise above.

A periodic reminder that when you re-arrange the letters in Mark Spector, you get: Tsk, more crap.

No, the argument is valid, and well evidenced. And a lot of knowledgeable hockey people agree. You can disagree (as a lot of people do), and you are free to present an opposing argument. But to simply dismiss it as 'plus/minus' is lazy and wrong.

Nonsense! McDavid comes down low to help out.
He helps out with dirty crosschecks that rarely get called.

Current Top 10 scorers with PP points in parenthesis:
1. McDavid - 66 (34)
2. Draisaitl - 56 (26)
T-3. Robertson - 50 (19)
T-3. Thompson - 50 (22)
5. Kucherov - 49 (20)
6. Pastrnak - 47 (22)
7. E. Karlsson - 46 (13)
T-8. Kaprizov - 43 (18)
T-8. Crosby - 43 (10)
10. Rantanen - 42 (17)
McDavid is nothing but a power play specialist, especially this season. He is only 10 away from tying his career high in 44 PPP’s, which he accomplished last season.
Subtract the PPP’s and you’ve got Crosby and E. Karlsson leading the way at 33 ESPs and Robertson tied with McDavid at 31. Yes, McDavid has more PPPs than ESPs.
Haven’t even looked but I’m positive the Oilers draw a lot of penalties and are top of the league in that thanks to their PP specialist.

You'd think the All Star Game would be the kind of game McDavid would shine. I guess when he has to share the Power Play time, he doesn't do as well.
