you play that many minutes you are gonna have the odd turnover...Tanev himself had a brutal one that led to a goal in SJ
Feels like Brodie/Jaybo hate with this guy...why we can't have nice things
Zadorov said Weegar is the best dman he has ever played with

I'd like to see JFresh do one for Hanifin. I have really been impressed with the way his game is coming along. This California trip has opened my eyes to the strides he's made.

I agree with the Brodie/Jaybo comparison.
I also think Tkachuk got dumped on too for “being too cute” with the puck. Give me a break - dude was making high skill plays in tough areas of the net - and puts up the points he puts up - that’s not being cute, that’s being skilled. Now everyone is trying to critique Huberdeau as if Huberdeau isn’t one of the best offensive players in the league.
I feel like some fans have this weird fixation with mistake-free/safe players - and that’s not how you win hockey games. Get out there and make a play! That’s what I see Weegar doing night in and night out - the guy wants to push the play up the ice at all costs.

I have to admit he has an uncanny ability to flub cross ice passes like no other player. Just a split second lack of focus and execution of what should be a very basic pass.

I really want Zadorov and Weegar as a pairing. We need Kylington back (at this point I wonder if hockey is still for him) or someone better than Stone.

Agreed he looked his best with Zadorov. We can get rid of Stone and get Tanev a left handed partner if Kylington is out for the season it would really help.
Also his turnover the puck went on edge right before he went to pass it, it was a fluke play.
Once he scores I think his offensive game is going to come around.

Weegar has looked off a bit lately. Some really bad turnovers. He’s not terrible though.
The Flames need one more reliable dman and a winger who can finish to make up for kylington and Mangiapane’s drop off.
Best case is we get both back in the second half. I don’t think Stone or the D from the farm will fill Kylington’s void. Not sure if Zary, Pelletier or Phillips are the answer for Mangiapane.
It would be nice not to have to bring in a rental. But this team has a big finishing problem. Their shooting percentage has to be the worst in the league. It’s the biggest problem now in my mind.

Huberdeau and Weegar are two of the best defensive players in the league this season...not my stats, player cards
Sutter has already had a massive impact on both and it should only get better

Yup. I don't think people (myself included) account for just how hard it is to teach poor defensive players to evolve their game, but also how not every NHL player has the ability (or desire) to commit to what's needed. It's a big deal that Huberdeau and Weegar are among the top in the NHL given their history on that side of the puck.

an not to pile on but Gaudreau seems to have totally abandoned his defensive game...Sutter got the best out of him on both ends IMO

It also takes time to adjust and get used to playing with different players and learning their tendencies. As a fan base we should be patient and hopefully be rewarded for it.

Huberdeau also has 15 points in his last 15 games. The offence is coming...oh, and also - he's playing with Milan Lucic.
There hasn't been a great fit for Huberdeau line-wise yet either, as the team is just outright missing a top-6/top-9 winger. Even with that gap in the roster though he has been elite defensively, has 15 points in his last 15 games, and is generally just playing well. If this team can acquire a proper top-six RW to play on his line, I'd expect his line's production to take off. We really need Mang to sort his game out because our cap-structure is just a disaster with three $5M 3rd line players (Mang, Coleman, Backlund), and one $5M 4th line player (Lucic).

Dude...I understand that, I do.
But Weegar and Huberdeau arent spring chickens anymore.
We can commend Treliving for his off-season work and acquisitions, but he went all-in on this group that are largely in their late 20s and early 30s.
Time is not on their side. They've got to get their poop in a group and they've got to do it fast. They do not have endless windows of competitiveness.

I don’t think Gaudreau has necessarily abandoned the defensive side of the game, it’s just that he’s playing for a really awful team and awful teams have a way of sinking your defensive game.
Gaudreau was never elite in his own end anyway; although he was terrific in Darryl’s system in the way he could back check and support the D so they could step up and make plays at their blue line. I also think Johnny misses Tkachuk because he really helped to mask Johnny’s biggest weakness which was along the half wall area.
But really, I think it ultimately speaks more to how good Darryl’s system is than anything else. The way Sutter positions his F3 and the way he attacks the points is a thing of beauty. So personally, I think Darryl almost has a way of artificially elevating player’s defensive metrics.
Even just looking at how Gudbranson and Gaudreau’s numbers have tanked and how Huberdeau and Weegar’s numbers have skyrocketed despite their occasional shoddy work in their own end speaks to that. Also, just comparing the way San Jose defends and how Darry’s team defends is another example of how good Sutter’s system is. He just makes it a lot easier to defend as a 5 man unit. The support through the neutral zone, they way they pressure in their own end, it’s really quite impressive.

90% of Weegar's goals in the past 2-3 years were scored off the rush by either leading the rush or coming in late as the trailer. He hasn't been really been doing those things since his first few games in Calgary.
Is Darryl telling him not to be as active on offense or is it just the system? It does feel a bit like the Jaybo situation where the offense dried up when he came to Calgary.

Weegar needs to find his offensive game. Paying $6.25M for a shutdown Dman from age 29-37 is not ideal

Actually it's not bad. There are similar dmen making similar salaries in defensive roles.
And the offense will come. But even if it doesn't, 6.25M will never be a disaster of a contract for him. If he ends up being over paid, it'll be by $500K max.

Isn’t that kind of the problem though? The Flames aren’t really a strong rush scoring team anymore. Last year’s top line were the ones who excelled in this area with Gaudreau and Tkachuk leading the charge, but obviously, they aren’t here anymore.
I think I saw Weegar walking the line pretty well in Florida, so maybe he could be an asset at some point on the PP. But it doesn’t look like Andersson and Hanifin are ready to give up their respective spots on the PP any time soon.

The cap will go up. Pretty much an extended Tanev deal.
