Visual sniff test tells me that Mangiapane is getting every shot off about a half second slower than last year which is greatly impacting his ability to do anything offensively

I really have no idea what he is. He might have already hit his career high, or maybe he finds it again. He was pretty good for a sustained stretch, end of previous and first half of last year. But now we are close to a full season where he looks like Mason Raymond.

Yeah, there is just a little hesitation before he gets the shot off, and it is crushing his effectiveness.

I do feel like it's coming though. He has been getting more looks in recent games, so that is encouraging.

That Huberdeau pass in overtime was especially egregious. He just skated through two opposing players. He should have known a no-look behind the back pass was likely going to cause a turnover. He’s clearly overthinking his game. He needs to think less and be more selfish.

Pretty happy overall with the comeback, although disappointing that they lost so much composure in 10 sec of the third period that they HAD to come back. The team played well and hard, limiting chances down the middle, but missing a few checks along the way (see Kings goals 1 & 2).

They are, I think, s-l-o-w-l-y coming along. If they keep improving, they'll be pretty good by the end of the season, if they're still in a playoff position.

Exactly. There was nobody in front of him, and everybody behind him. He passed up a (very short) breakaway for a 1 on 2. Egregious is the word.

But it gives me some optimism, because the problems with his game seem to be in his head. I believe he's working through that as he gets comfortable with this team.

Maybe it’s all his head, but I still haven’t seen any sort of play from Huberdeau that looks like something only a $10m player can do. One spin move in preseason. Otherwise he looks no more special than someone making 4-6.

Even if he is in his head, you’d think after 30+ games he’d at least accidentally do one thing that’s awesome.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this yet, but Rasmus defending that 2 on 1 was atrocious.

Always take away the pass, not only did he NOT do this, he allowed the pass twice.

I wonder if that whole “best passer the team has ever had.” comment is festering in his head. The guy just needs to say #### it, im getting paid for the next 8 years regardless, and just go out and play his game.

I think you are over thinking it. Dude came from Florida with no fans and no focus on defense while driving a Lambo to the rink everyday. He is adjusting and for the most part has been ok defensively. The offense is slowly coming on. His life has been completely up-turned.

Mangiapane with 14 points in 34 games this year

Lucic with 9 points in 31 games this year

Mangiapane getting back to 80% of the player he was last season would be like adding a new player at the deadline, hopefully the Christmas break is a chance for him to reset.

Negatives:

The Flames are the worst team post 60 minutes in the league and it hurt them again tonight. Not an actual stat. Just my personal opinion.

Another Positive:

Beating Anaheim tomorrow will put this team on a 7/8 point roadtrip.
Positive to the Negative:

Neither post 60 minute style of play appears in the playoffs.

It feels like Eat Bread is getting closer to last year's form. No data to back it up, just my eye test. He seems to be getting a little more aggressive at times, and I think reuniting him with Backlund and Coleman can only help, they need to just leave those 3 together for a long time. Wouldn't be surprised if he goes on a heater after the Xmas break.

i think Mangiapane will be fine. He’s a bit of a streaky scorer, so once he finds the back of the net, he’ll probably bag a few more shortly after. Remember, for most of last season, he played with Backlund and Coleman.

This season, he‘s spent the majority of his time with Kadri who‘s a good player in his own right. But he’s also pretty erratic, you never know when he’s going to pass or shoot or drive the net himself, his play is relatively unpredictable and I don‘t think that suits Mangiapane at all.

Mangi is great at retrieving pucks, cycling, checking and etc. I think he thrives when he’s consistently playing the dump and chase game which is the strength of the Backlund line. So as long as he continues playing with Backlund and Coleman, the production will come. If the last 2 games have been any kind of indication, then these guys are ready to pop.

He is 3rd in the league for defensive metrics for forwards...okay might be an understatement

the league not the team

It really does feel like Huberdeau is about to breakout now. If you look at his stat lines this is how he piled up 115 points, a game with 3 assists next game a goal next game 5 points.

It was annoying that he didn't shoot, but at least he is in the position to create those chances I would be more worried if he wasn't creating at all.

His confidence also seems to be growing as he is making some risky passes that when they work they lead to goals and easy chances for the shooter.

What an amazing backcheck by Backlund in OT.
Should make him the Captain.
Leadership by example.

Well yeah but 3 on 3 is a little different...it wasn't a good play but that is usually how OT ends...risk to win at one end and if you miss it's all over at the other end
