I base my top 10 on how many times I've rewatched a given movie and how likely I am to continue to do so in the future

1. Shawshank Redemption
2. Forrest Gump
3. Back To The Future (1 & 2)
4. Terminator 2
5. Airplane!
6. Infinity War/Endgame
7. Die Hard
8. Monty Python & The Holy Grail

This year is it's 80th anniversary and I enjoyed it better than any 2022 movie which is crazy impressive; how many movies released in 2022 will audiences in 2102 still enjoy besides Morbius?

Variety just released a list of top 100 movies and it's much more mainstream but also wild (Bridesmaids over Alien ) this one I've seen 30 films.

That variety list exists for one reason and one reason only: to generate rage clicks by producing the dumbest list possible.

It includes My Best Friends Wedding. Seriously. And Bridesmaids. Like wtf?

But doesn’t include Schindler’s List, Shawshank, Taxi Driver, One Flew Over the ####oos Nest, Rear Window, T2, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Dr Strangelove, Back to the Future, the good the bad and the ugly, Children of Men etc.

It’s a joke. An anti-list designed to be so stupid that people get mad a type posts like this one. If it was accurate, people would just shrug their shoulders and be like “looks good”.

So basically it’s like all the rest of these click bait “lists”.

Huh, 35 films. There are easily another 20 films that I heard of and wanted to see, but never did. The others? Wtf… never even had an inkling that they existed. I’m curious to try a few out to see what I’m missing.

Glad to see Billy Wilder films still getting high praise. He was underrated.

I can't even count the amount of times I have seen Raiders of the Lost Ark over my lifetime. For me no other movie comes remotely close in regards to repeated viewings outside of maybe John Carpenter's The Thing.

Raiders is hands down my favorite movie of all time, and has been for decades now. It still holds up today as the gold standard for action/adventure flicks.

Hot take: I think Last Crusade is the best Indiana Jones movie.

It's perfection and there will likely never be a better action/adventure movie made.

Seen 60, own another 7 I haven't got around to watching yet. And another handful sitting on the DVR waiting to be watched.

I think it's fine to not want to watch most of the films on that list, everyone has different tastes. I dislike the charges of pretension in things like this though as if it's not perfectly valid that people who have explored further into cinema from all around the world (i.e. critics, directors, etc) would have different tastes from the average cinema goer. To use myself as an example, I like a drop of whiskey now and then. I'm perfectly fine with a $30 bottle of Jameson or Paddy's. No real interest in exploring the world of whiskey beyond that. So if a top 100 whiskies list was published and I said "Pfft, haven't even heard of most of these. How pretentious", my opinion wouldn't hold much weight, would it? (or for another example, if I only ate at chain restaurants, my opinion on a list of the top restaurants in Calgary would be useless.)

And that's not a knock on anybody at all. It's perfectly fine to like what you like and not branch out if you don't want to. It's the dismissive attitude that I find irritating as if other people can't possibly like the things we don't like.

Anyway, my list of favourite films...

1. Koyaanisqatsi
2. The Ice Storm
3. In the Name of the Father
4. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
5. Raiders of the Lost Ark
6. Trainspotting
7. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
8. JFK
9. The Revenant
10. Terminator 2

The last half are probably interchangable with any of the following on any given day - 2001, Children of Men, Jurassic Park, The Sixth Sense, The Matrix, Gangs of New York, The Elephant Man, The Shining, Unforgiven, Sherlock Jr., Y Tu Mama Tambien, A.I., and various Tarantinos.

I have a tough time making top 10 lists, but my top 2 films of all time have never, ever changed, and I doubt I will see anything to remove one of these films from the top 2:

1) Seven Samurai (Kurosawa)
2) Dr. Strangelove (Kubrick)

Thinking of some movies I'd have to include: Drive, Planet of the Apes, Terminator 1 & 2, Alien, Scream, Mad Max Fury Road, Shawshank Redemption, Green Mile, Pans Labyrinth, Zack Snyder's JL, Silence of the Lambs, Titanic.

Along with my list yesterday that's 25 films and I feel like I could get 100 and still feel like I'm missing so many.

The Passion of Joan of Arc, When the Levees Broke, The Godfather, Paper Moon, My Life to Live, Days of Heaven Rashomon, The Grapes of Wrath, Spotlight, Mon Oncle Antoine

The Sight and Sound lists are for hardcores, though if you're into classic world cinema then it's usually a good place to go for recommendations. Keep in mind this is a critic's list. A poll of directors chose 2001 as the best movie in their poll.

The Spirit of the Beehive is an amazing film, definitely in my top 10 as well which would probably be in no particular order: A clockwork orange, stalker, the spirit of the beehive, Andrei Rublev, Singles, eraserhead, grapes of wrath, rear window, pi, dr. Strangelove.

Honorable mentions: There will be blood, Hype!, Barry Lyndon, the apartment, the skin I live in… I know im probably missing a lot…

My top 10 in no order:

Dark Knight
Spirited Away
Alien
Fellowship of the Ring
Mad Max, Fury Road
Pride and Prejudice
High and Low
Once Upon a Time in the West
North by Northwest
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

I feel like Dune probably makes the list after a couple more viewings.

I'm happy more people seem to be discovering this one.

I'd say North by Northwest is also my favorite Hitchcock. I Confess with Montgomery Clift is up there too.... set in old Quebec and shot on location.
