point remains a lot can change in the next couple months...Flames are fighting for a divisional spot as much as a Wildcard. What they do depends a lot on how things go for the next while

A lot could change, but right now it looks like Edmonton, Calgary, LA fighting for a division spot and a WC spot.

I was curious so I looked it up.
After 33 games last season we were 17-10-6 with 40 points and 104 GF.

This season we're 15-12-6 with 36 points and 104 GF.

Bizarre that we're only 4 points behind last season and we ended up with an amazing record. Goes to show things aren't as bad as it seems, I can only speak for myself but at times this season has felt like the sky is falling and we can't score, yet we are almost at an identical pace as last season.

If we turn it up like last season, I wonder if we do another Toffoli type deal at deadline. Difference being we don't have as much flexibility and I'd hate to give away assets.

On a side note the Oilers on the other hand are at the exact same record as they were last season after 34 games (18-12-2).

I'm with you.

Last year seemed a bit different. It felt like we were always in control of games and the effort was always consistent. Likely felt better last season because the 1st line was executing at such an elite level that it always seemed like we could get back in games on any given shift with those 3 players. This year has been a bit more chaotic - whether it be giveaways, bad goaltending, or inability to generate scoring chances - it just leaves me with less confidence in the team.

Everything clicked perfectly last season, and this season it certainly hasn't (...so far).

I think they’re one of the most underrated teams in the NHL simply because of who they are. I can see them easily in second.

Certainly a factor is missing Tkachuk's play down low and around the crease. He was elite down there as a finisher and playmaker. Feels like they aren't getting those same kinds of chances.

Seattle is definitely still in the race with everyone else...also both Wild Card spots are in the mix IMO

considering how must of the team is playing before expectations the fact they have the exact some goals for as last year is surprising.

If they had the .920 goaltending of last season they would be ahead of last years pace probably...likely by quite a bit.

How much is scoring up overall though across the league. You have to normalize for that. If they are flat and the rest of the league is up, they are basically down.

Markstrom cleary cost us games in the early part of the schedule. Imagine if we were sitting on the right side of some of those 1 goal games. 5 more wins puts us up by Vegas fighting for top spot. Such a fine line and really does not feel like we are as bad as we have looked.

They have allowed more goals this year...that is why the record is slightly worse.

Not all but a lot of that is on the goaltending...especially early. Now last year the Flames also had a 10 game win streak so that remains to be seen. Only point is they are RIGHT THERE.

I think its likely they play better than Seattle and LA the rest of the way...wait and see I guess

The team has faced adversity this year and come through it ok. The over reactions and calls to fire Sutter were sure something else. Season isn't even half way done yet. I'm excited to see what this team brings in the playoffs.

Look at the Seattle and Edmonton games early in the season...should have been sure wins

give the Flames 4 more points and those two teams 2 less each. Flames are looking pretty good.

Hopefully both goalies are on more often than not for the rest of the year

Another factor is the Flames had zero injuries last season (sorry Ritchie)

What would the record be if Kylington, Tanev, Lindholm, Huberdeau, had never missed a game?

Last year was the exception to the rule I am well aware but if we are comparing

Only part of Tkachuks game I miss. He was always camping out around the net or taking pucks behind the net and creating some chaos in the slot area. Was also good at tipping shots.

Dude was also amazing defensively and was awesome at puck retrievals/break out passes. He’s elite.

Worth mentioning that Johnny really finished well last season too. Think of how many Chances Toffoli has had and put Johnny (or Chucky’s) finishing ability in that spot (and that’s no shot on Toffoli, just different tier of players). Johnny and Chucky were lethal.

In general I’m not overly concerned about this team making the playoffs or not - I think they will. I just have trouble believing they’re anything “special” come playoff time…time will tell, but I just hate being a team in that 10-16 spot league-wide. We’ve spent so much time in that range, with it usually being closer to 16 than 10. It felt like at the end of last season we were finally establishing ourselves as a top team and then the rug got pulled out from under our feet and we’re right back into that mushy middle.

I think Seattle makes the playoffs, never said they are a lock for 2nd.

For the record I think the Flames pick it up in the send half and get a 2/3 spot.
