When Sutter took over this team in 2021 he coached the team to a .500 record over 30 games and they took off for 111 the next year. Swapping out Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Gudbransen, Kylington (for now) with Hubderdeau, Kadri, Weegar, Stone/Mackey/Gilbert basically had this team back to square one.

Players had to figure out where to fit and who plays with who. Lindholm is back right near ppg, Kadri had a great start and recent solid stretch sandwiched between lackluster results. Huberdeau has had a hard time adjusting but has started to collect points in almost every game.

We are 33 games in and hopefully this team is going to start to take off. Mangiapane has been a big disappointment but Toffoli and Dube have stepped up huge. With the Mangi-Backs-Coleman line back together the need for a top 6 wing remains at the top of the list and if they can get that the top 9 will look very strong. If Markstrom can get on a consistent roll this team will be one of the best over the last 50ish games

An ugly W is still a W and just like our bench boss we sure do like Ws.

Power forward Lucic, who would have guessed, credit where it's due big Looch, great game.

Solid win! Just what the doctor ordered, b2b wins against a division rival and a team they are supposed to beat. Good to see the offence break out recently.

Really really hoping this means the Flames are moving and they can avoid taking a few steps back. Would be nice to gain some ground in the standings.

Some great saves by Markstrom too. He's looked much better recently and hope he can carry it forward.

That actually reminds me -- I'm pretty sure I had a dream last night that Weegar was somehow playing for the Sharks and ended up scoring his first goal of the year... against us.

I'm not sure what that says of me or Weegar but I'll be glad when these 8:30 starts are over...

I am less concerned with the forwards / offense and more concerned about the team defence and attention to it. Seems like they give up a lot of high quality chances but I wonder what the fancy stats say relative to the rest of the NHL.

I'd like to see more HQC from Calgary as well. The high shot volume is misleading. Lots of outside shots (last night being an exception due to the fact SJ sucks).

This is a very good sign! Glad he found the groove.

Flames are 8th in high danger chances against, 8th in regular scoring chances against and 8th in xGA60.

So a top ten team defensively.

Issue is the other side ...

21st
20th
12th

Another interesting stat ... the Flames have the 2nd best high danger shooting percentage at five on five.

Good for Lucic for having a good game but obviously it is not the long term solution for who to play with Huberdeau.

If I had to guess, Phillips will slot in for Lucic on that RW on Friday against the Ducks, I bet Sutter told him to see how Hub - Kadri play and see what he can bring to their line, where the open ice is etc.

Lucic now has same goals and more points in less games than Poolparty. Oh and a better +/- too

He's doing it so "quietly". Is this what we're supposed to expect from him? A lot of points but not looking like the guy who carries the team on his back? I expected to notice him as a dominant offensive force who carries the team's offense. He's not looking like that but has been getting points the past few weeks.

I think that you're setting yourself up for disappointment.

He's always been an assist guy, especially his big year last year. I don't know that he's known as a flashy passer - just a really effective one - good at making plays from the wing - and that meets my eye test.

He was second line in Florida, which might support your thought that he is highly productive but not the go to guy. It’s kind of strange to think of your top scorer (assuming he ends up being that) not being your top offensive guy though, unless he’s not getting primary points or scoring at clutch times.

Ya probably... but this is a way I can justify Sutter putting Lucic in the top 6 and Phillips not playing for what like 5 games now?

Sutter clearly has some sort of a plan, I am just trying to guess what it might be haha

I think he's pretty noticeable ... he tries to create something every time he gets the puck honestly.

If anything I think he's trying too hard ... needs to just shoot the puck more.
