Kind of a weird game. The final score is fitting as the Flames played hard and the Sharks are the worst team I have seen this year. The weird part is that somehow the game was tied with 10 minutes as the score did not indicate the disparity between the two teams until the end of the game when the Sharks just stopped playing. Credit to Markstrom for making two key saves in the 3rd period that led to goals scored the other way. In an 82 game all that counts is the result in the standings. The defensive breakdowns at times are still dogging the team and it's something you just don't expect from a Darryl Sutter coached team. Hoping that in the coming months they can put together some 60 minutes efforts.

As for the Sharks that was pretty ghastly hockey. I will give them props for a very good looking PK but otherwise David Quinn is simply not a good NHL head coach and while the roster isn't that good, it's not the worst but the effort level is by far the worst I have seen from any NHL team this season. I feel bad for fans that are turning out to watch that.

Flames deserved the win and the score was much tighter than the play of the whole game, but the Flames did try to make it interesting with kitty-bar-the-door first half of the third period. On to LA and face a team that is playing some good hockey and not what they experienced in San Jose. This will be a real test for the club and give us a good indication if they are ready to challenge for a playoff spot.

Also Andersson back to back games with a +4. Top pairing has been extremely good as of late.
Don’t get too excited yet. San Jose is brutal defensively.

If they do the same against LA then we start planning parades.

The Flames defensive effort (and I’m including forwards in this) made the Sharks look like the globetrotters. Zadorov and Stone were a straight up nightmare tonight, Hanifin, not good. Huberdeau, turnover central. But it’s all Markstrom’s fault.

Meanwhile Reimer looked like he was the university kid called in on an emergency basis.
I agree the Zadorov Stone tandem isn’t the best. I’ve thought that in a few games.

Lucic had a good game. Will he have another good game? Time will tell. Nice pass on the Kadri goal and another goal. A rookie would have been buried after that brain dead penalty, but Lucic got a second chance and made the most of it.

Mangiapane's best game of the year so far. Great game from Backlund, too.

I think many of us were on to something about Lucic being more useful when being managed properly. Hopefully Darryl will be keen enough to sit him more when is play dips as he's had more energy since his break.

I don't know how the game was, I spent most of the night listening to Millen try and say Huberdeau. One that was pointed out, its all I could hear.

I love hockey and I know for a fact I'd go to way less hockey games if it was 20-25 degrees outside every day.
What fanbase wants to spend big $$ to watch a crappy team.

I remember the Flames pre 2004 run. The sales reps at the company I worked for couldn’t give tickets away.

He's been more or less as advertised. Good advanced stats with the odd costly gaffe. Fans that expected a flashy, noticeable guy may be disappointed. I know he doesn't get on the powerplay a lot but I was expecting a little more out of him offensively although I expect some of that may be due to adjusting to a more defensive oriented system.

Some Canadian fans have this weird obsession with US based teams and their attendance. I feel the Coyotes for example receive so much more attention than they deserve because Canadian fans can't get over the fact that the NHL needs a team in that market for US TV market share. What would the attendance be in the Dome this year if the Flames looked as horrible as the Sharks? Like I said in another post I feel sorry for fans showing up to watch that as they are just so bad. It's not like the Flames were selling out last season with one of the best teams in the league and there's lots of empty seats at the Dome this season. California has so much options with their weather that most of their professional sports teams suffer when losing. It is what it is.

Yeah adding shot location and context is certainly better than just shots (save percentage) because that shows you true chances to score ... the player may suck, or his execution may suck and the goalie has an easy time of it, but at very least it's a stress point.

So the high danger stuff is a pretty decent measure of what a team gives up, and it certainly points to a goalie's ability if all other things are held equal (average of quality of player against, average of players that fan or put the puck straight into the goaltender).

But we've certainly seen opposing goaltenders with easy nights against Calgary this year although they sported a .930 save percentage.

And honestly at his cap hit just be a solid top four defenseman which he easily is.

Good things happen when he's on the ice ... with Tanev or with Zadorov.

Add in that he can play both sides which makes him handy as hell with injuries and I'm honestly not sure the lack of offense bothers me that much.
