Updated Dec 12th 2022 with Craig Button's draft list. There's a definite top 4 that has emerged in most lists but it seems broken with Craig pushing Michkov down another spot to 5. All of Bedard, Fantilli, and Carlsson are putting up generational level statistics at D-1, while many in Russia believe that Michkov could be the most talented goal scorer of all time.
Not pleasant to think about, but if the flames continue to perform middle of the league, there are still some extremely intriguing players that could add a ton to our franchise that may be available mid first round.
My favourite potential targets:
Nate Danielsen - 6'1 185lbs RHS C from Red Deer. Captain of Wheat Kings and 37 points in 31 games so far this season. FC Hockey has him the highest at 9, but most have him in the 17-21 range. He's 21 on Button's list.
Calum Ritchie- 6'2 190lbs RHC C/RW from Brampton. Assistant Captain for Oshawa Generals. Bit of a disappointing season so far, with 25 points in 27 games. Turned heads at the Hlinka where he put up 10 points in 5 games. Generally ranked right around #10 but the aforementioned slow start in the OHL this year has him falling. Button has him at 19 in the rankings.
Riley Heidt- 5'11 179 lbs LHS C, from Saskatoon, Assistant Captain for Prince George Cougars. 42 points in 29 games. 6 in 5 at the Hlinka. Firmly in the 15-20 range across the board, Button has him at 18,
Koehn Ziemmer- 6'0 194 lbs RHS RW from Mayerthorpe AB, linemates with Heidt on the Cougars. 42 points (19 g) in 29 games. Heavy on the puck and laser shot.
These are the 4 I would be looking at hardest in our potential range, unless someone unexpected starts falling. Yes, 3/4 are prairie boys but some loyalty is ingrown that way. All having pretty excellent offensive seasons, all heavy and hard on the puck.

Eduard Sale at 4 feels like a Button special. Either way, Michkov dropping out of the top 3 would have been seen as insane only a few months ago ... but hard to argue with the non-hockey factors. If you're drafting at 2 and can have a stud like Fantilli, why take a risk with Michkov instead?

This is where Draft rankings and Draft predictions will come into play. Mitchkov could still be ranked 2/3/4 but predicted to go 5+.

Does anyone have any opinions on Andrew Cristall?
MyNHLDraft has him going 13th, and the Flames have the 13th worst point percentage.
Cristall is 5'9, 163 lbs, and has 55 points in 28 WHL games.

Connor Bedard is 5'10", 185lbs, and has 64 points in 28 WHL games. Bedard has more talent to work with too.
It would seem like Cristall is a hair behind Bedard in all categories-speed, skill, size. He's still a very fast and elusive skater, good at finding the open spaces, and drawing defenders to him. Not as fast as CB, but he has moves of his own, and can change direction quickly- making opponents look silly. He's not afraid of traffic, and can even play a physical style. He's known as a playmaker, but he's got a great release and an accurate wrister that can find the tiniest holes, so he's really an equal threat to dish or score. He can pull out any pass you like-backhands, through traffic, saucers, etc. He might not show up on the nightly highlight reel, like Bedard, but there's not a very big gulf between them.
If there's negatives, one would be his defensive play, which isn't necessarily bad, it's just at a junior level- he cheats like most offensive players his age. The other negative might be the fact that he's going to need to bulk up quite a bit, and get stronger (I have seen him listed at 5'10" btw).

If BPA (best prospect available) is out the window at our pick, assuming there are warts and strengths/weaknesses, etc for our pick, is it better for us to take a forward or a defenseman? Surely there will be a faller when all is said and done, but is there a deeper forward or defense group out there?
After losing Tkachuk and Gaudreau I think it makes sense to draft a top end winger with lots of offensive upside. Doesn’t necessarily have to be a solid two way player, we need someone that can get on the scoreboard.

If Michkov falls into the Flames lap, who cares if he's going to be available after 2026 season anyway. Our window will have closed by then and we'll be right into a rebuild. It'll be good to get him then.
But I doubt Michkov falls below top 10.

With the way this draft is looking, rest assured-we will be getting a fantastic player with our first this year (hope we keep it). This draft is very forward-heavy in the top round, and everyone in it is awesome. I think we could use a blue-chip D to fill the cupboards, but as they say- BPA.

If everyone in the draft is awesome, the only teams we'll be gaining an advantage on are the ones that don't have a pick.

Okay. The only time the draft is advantageous is when you can draft a player better than others. If everyone's getting Sakic or Yzerman or Jagr or Lemieux, then...cool for hockey, but no advantage.

Well, at the end of the end of the day, these kids are only 17-18, and nobody REALLY knows.

True. It just truly doesn't matter if it's a horrible draft or the best draft ever, if you have a pick you can keep up with the rest of the league.
