I actually don’t believe those people. There’s a certain machismo to being okay with the cold, which is easy to fake when your embrace with thirty-below is limited to the chill that cuts through your Patagonia parka during the walk through the parking lot from your pre-warmed, heated seats, heated steering wheel truck to the also heated sanctuary of the liquor store where you need to blow a bank note or three to convince yourself it’s really not that bad when you stare out the window of your heated house at tomfoolery of people trying to walk their dogs.

I believe some people actually would prefer this weather, but I don’t believe those people are office workers who spend time on CP. Maybe like, Siberian hunters and the Inuit I guess.

Man I love +30, I could do it for a long period of time with no issues. I agree, you'd have be insane to prefer this #### weather instead. Heck, I don't even like under 0 degrees anymore. Can we trade Alberta to the US for California? San Diego is my retirement plan, haha.

Under 0 is fine, heck even up to -15 is fine. If it never went below zero we'd never really get to do any winter activities, outdoor skating, that kind of stuff. But this windchill -40 stuff... it's not much fun.

I knew I should have saved one more week of holidays for the end of the year. This would have been a good one to just stay home. It's really cold out there today.

Really? This is perfect working weather. Assuming you don’t work outside.

This is not perfect weather for anything other than dying of exposure.

Waiting for the "I'll take -30 over +30 any day crowd to show up".

I'm not in the "I'll take -30 over +30" crowd, but I do take a perverse pleasure in being able to still ride into work. Fully covered with no exposed skin, slower due to all the extra resistance. Arrived sweaty except for my feet, which were feeling the chill by the end (42 minute ride).

Which is very different from the people in this thread who talk about loving +30 and all have AC, lake access, or just like drinking beer outside at 10pm when the sun has finally gone down.

Okay, I'll raise my hand and I'm not doing it to be a contrarian. I legitimately prefer this weather over +30.

For me, this summer was miserable. I hated how hot it was. I just sweat and sweat. It drains me. I hate riding my bike because it's too hot. I hate sitting outside. I hate the sun beating down on me. Sitting in my house with AC is fine and all, but like anybody else I prefer windows open with a cool night breeze washing through the house. It was impossible this year.

This weekend, on the other hand, was great. Was in Canmore and Banff and the streets, stores and restaurants were fairly dead because all the pussies stay home. We walked everywhere - just wore long johns, a toque and - not sure if you I've mentioned I own one - my Canada Goose parka. It was glorious.

Today I woke up in Canmore and it was -30. Looked out my window, remote started my car (which I had queued up to full heat when I parked it the day before) and had a cup of coffee. Wandered outside to my toasty warm car 20 minutes later and off I went to Calgary. It was awesome because the sun wasn't up yet and I could drive in darkness with my music up. Sunrise just started as I was approaching Calgary. Like, I don't understand what could be better than that. It was one of the best weekends I've had in forever.

I've said it before and I've said it again...proper winter clothes and a remote car starter erases anything bad about winter.

I'd like to be a reverse snowbird when I retire. I'm going to run away from any temps above 25. As far as mild temps go, I do love around 18. Sitting on a patio in a hoodie is super fun, so it's not like I want to go live in the arctic or something, but I really enjoy this time of year and this weather for the few months we are prone to super cold temps.

One thing I don't understand about the people who complain so vocally and passionately about how much they hate the cold, though, is why the fata don't you do something about it? It honestly can't be that hard to figure out how to move to California or Arizona or Florida or somewhere with warm weather. I get if this is your first winter here and it has caught you off guard, but if you're over 18 and bitching about the cold year after year just STFU or move. It's really on you if you haven't figured out that it gets warmer as you move further south.

I'm not sure +40 and global warming in Vietnam is much better. Unless you're in Da Lat.

I'm one of the heat seekers, but I don't have to plan to move to where that is. despite these dumb arctic vortexes, the heat is coming our way year over year and there's nothing the weirdo polar bear people can do about it.

My youngest was at the bus stop for 20 minutes this morning and his bus didn't come. According to my wife he ran home crying. That's just not going to happen in +30 degrees. There is nothing remotely redeemable about this weather. Nothing.

Sliver: Your youngest is weak!

Kidding aside, the bus not coming is a bigger problem with this city than then the weather.

I HATE the cold, I'm nicknamed "two sweaters." But I choose to live here.

-30 sucks, but the average daily high for this day of the year is -1 Celsius. That means it's almost as likely to be above zero as it is to be below zero... and this is for one of the coldest days for the year. If you take November-February as a whole, the typical daytime high is actually above zero.
