It was excellent yes but bear in mind he was invisible for 80 minutes before scoring a penalty and a volley.

Don't know who got it but MacAllister was MOM for me.

Terrible comparison.
Firstly it's international competition, we're not cheering for an arch rival.

Secondly if you want to make an NHL comparison, it's more like Crosby in the final and had Crosby never won the cup before.
Almost every neutral fan would be cheering for Sid.

At least the NHL knows how stupid a shootout is in playoff games.

Hopefully they end it for regular season games as well.

They should have kept playing sudden death.

It was Di Maria until he was subbed. (Terrible sub in hindsight)

Penalties are part of the game. Many goals are scored that way.

The shootout is made up skills competition. Makes no attempt to simulate what happens in a game. That’s what bugs me most about it.

There no other solution. You'd have players literally collapsing.

Maybe another 30 minute period but that's about it.

Penalty shots are also part of the game in hockey but admittedly few of them happen. Regardless I find penalties in soccer to be more exciting for some reason, maybe because you're supposed to score so the pressure is higher.

The other solution would be shortening the pitch and doing 7v7 or something. But never gonna happen.

Well I guess in some respects penalties are ingrained in the sport. A shootout to decide the final is kind of expected I guess.

Can you imagine deciding the Stanley Cup with a shootout?

There were 3 PK goals in this game before the penalties happened. It’s not comparable to hockey shootouts in any way, since it a much bigger part of the game.

I think you could maybe go to another 30 minutes and have a couple more subs allowed, but really it’s a perfectly fine way to end the game after 120+ minutes have already been played.

True but in hockey you can play forever. Soccer doesn't choose a shootout by choice its by necessity.

I think up until 1982 if the final was even after extra time it would have been replayed on Wednesday. Then if it was tied again, a coin toss prior to 82 and a shootout in 82. Luckily, a replay was never required.

Just an epic match for the ages overall; especially considering it took 80 minutes for any competitiveness.
I haven't watched an international match like that in my lifetime, maybe won't see one like it again.

Woah woah woah. Why am I being brought into this ?

So happy with the outcome. It was like a Brady/Mahommes-like game where the experienced vet got his team the win. Should’ve ended in regulation but Mbappe went god mode. He’s the next generational player.

Hands down the best world cup I’ve ever witnessed. It will be very hard to beat this one with the headlines going in for both teams. France gave it to Argentina. It took two different games of penalties for the Argentinians to win their world cup. And Messi deserves it.
