Not in this case.
He's on a first of 30 days or 10 games. In the best interest of both the player and the team to stretch that out to the 30 days and give him NHL practice time to assimilate into the roster.
Burn through 10 games and they'd send him down in 2.5 weeks.

Disagree, he is skating with NHL players and earning 5x his minors salary, quite a bit of difference there. He has like 200 AHL games, nothing for him to do there

Is he sitting in the press box currently or back with the Wranglers? Am I correct that he can sit in the pressbox for 30 days from the day he came up?

He looked better than Ruzicka's first 12 minutes this year though, so he's not kicking the door in, but he's not mailing it in either.

Exactly this.
He has had 12 minutes of icetime, and little has happened in that time. Neither a good thing, nor a bad thing - and anyone that sees good or bad from his time so far, is seeing what they want to see.
We need to see more icetime from him. And he has done nothing so far that should deter from giving it to him (he has already earned the call-up). So get him back out there so we can see what he can do!

I would say it's pretty clear from usage that Sutter couldn't wait to get Lucic back out there. Phillips has earned the right to try and play in the NHL, but Sutter is too old school to give it to him.
Not playing him against the Canucks at home was a low class move by Sutter.

How so?
You could also argue that scratching Lucic against the Canucks was a low class move by Sutter.

I figure that the only reason Lucic is playing is Sutter love of days gone by. Phillips is the leading scorer in the AHL, Lucic does not do a whole lot to contribute anymore...should be in the box watching/benched/bought out/put on waivers...whatever.

I doubt there's another team in the league that would call up the AHL's leading scorer because of the need to score goals and sit him in the press box.
Darryl needs to go back to the farm.

I doubt there's any team in the league that would call up "the AHL's leading scorer" and insert him directly on the first line. There is plenty of history to support these vaunted AHL scorers being inserted on the lower lines, especially guys that are D+7. Let's not make this seem like the Flames are sitting on Shane Wright here, or any first or second year pro who has high expectations of being a player. This is tiny (not small) 24 year old who is in his 5th pro season. Expectations need to be tempered here. The Flames know what they have in this player and are handling him the same way every other team in the NHL would.

Teams put prospects in positions to succeed immediately all the time. Cole Caufield. Alex DeBrincat. Hell, Cale Makar was right out of College when he immediately replaced Tyson Barrie on the Avs. We do not lose the Avs series if the Avs had a double standard for prospects.
The way the Flames have handled Ruzicka, Kylington, Bennett, Phillips, etc is pretty isolated to the Flames. Just double standards applied for their mediocre favourites versus guys stuck in an endless cycle of "can't prove it until you prove it but not allowed to prove it because you have not proven it"
And don't give me that BS about Phillips being an older prospect. He's been deserving better since his initial callup back in spring 2021. And that's only because he had a major injury in 2020 just as he was earning a callup.
The Flames refused to play Phillips and Kylington in meaningless games because the Flames did what the Flames do, which is value Nikita Nesterov types for no justifiable reason and write books on players who have never had a chance to even fail.

It feels isolated to the Flames because you follow the Flames and all of their prospects.

No, it feels isolated to the Flames because they are one of the oldest teams in the NHL while not being particularily good.
They freakin treat 26 year old zohorna like he's young

They treat Zohorna like he is a borderline NHLer IMO. The kind of player that passes through waivers unclaimed.

DeBrincat: 3 straight 100 point seasons in the OHL, including 65 goals in 63 games in last season, 2nd round draft pick
Caufield - 15th overall, fantastic pro start at 20 years old
Makar - 4th overall, arguably a generational talent
Phillips - 6th round pick, a very good WHL career but didn't hit 100 points until his final season, didn't hit PPG in the AHL until age 23.
One of these things is not like the other. Phillips has progressed and earned a shot, but you're really comparing not bringing him up to the Avs bringing up Makar, who would assuredly go #1 in a redraft?

The issue with Phillips is obviously his size, but he's not going to get any bigger sitting on the bench.

Damn you have an axe to grind don't you? Phillips is not in the same tier as those other guys no matter how much you want to make it a thing.

Well let’s look at something more relevant than an undersized prospect. Let’s talk about one of our recent first rounders and another teams second rounder.
Robertson on Dallas well was drafted in round 2 and got 47 points in 60 games in the AHL. He got promoted to the NHL for 3 games that initial season and then next season and on full time player in the NHL and never was sent back for more conditioning.
Pelletier had a first year of 62 points in 66 games and never got a sniff of the NHL. Now is in year two in the AHL and doesn’t look like he’s getting a shot this year either. Zary also pretty much got told preseason that in merit he should have made the team but they sent him down for contract reasons. Granteed is right in that we don’t put our picks in position to succeed.

Bobby brink: finish college, straight into the NHL
Tyler Johnson: finish junior, 1 season AHL, then split 2nd year, full timer after that
Cam Atkinson: finish college, straight to splitting time between AHL/NHL
Samuel Walker: finish college, straight to NHL, back in AHL now
Paul Byron: finish junior, AHL 1 season, cup of coffee the next (8 games), traded to Calgary, split time the next three seasons, then permanent NHLer
Yamamoto: made oilers out of camp in D+1, sent back to junior, split the next two years between NHL/AHL, full timer since then
Heponiemi: one more junior season, leave WHL for liiga, 1 season AHL, NHL cups of coffee next 3 seasons, currently in AHL.
Spurgeon: Finish juniors, straight to NHL
That’s everyone not already mentioned from the 5 shortest and 5 lightest players in the league
Teams give their talent a shot, the Flames don’t
Phillips: finish junior, 4 seasons AHL (1 end of season meaningless NHL game), lead AHL in scoring in 5th AHL season before 2 game (hopefully more) callup

Sorry but have the flames not graduated prospects into the nhl several seasons in a row now? Ruzicka/Zohorna this season? I think this has less to do with 'old school Darryl/Flames' and more to do with Phillips just not being good enough. Tbqh it's remarkable he's even got NHL games at his size, that's a win on its own.
People complaining about prospect development either forget or do not know how bad it was even 10 years ago.
