If Ovi can pot 50 this season, then

2023/24 (38yo) 35G
2024/25 (39yo) 25G
2025/26 (40yo) 20G

That will put him at 910 goals and breaking the record during the 2025/26 season (Final season of his contract). Could even do it the season before if he puts up just a few more. He's going to get there.

Will there ever be another 800 goal scorer?

I think Auston Matthews, with a long healthy career and no work stoppages, is probably the only one with a reasonable chance.

ohh! I'm actually in DC this week for work AND catching the caps game tomorrow. Maybe he'll power out another hat trick so I can witness the Howe tie, and him passing it.

Mathews has the best chance, but we will see. Ovi is just cut from a different cloth and scores as much now as he did at 26. Most goal scorers slow down rapidly. Not to mention you can probably count on one hand the number of games he's missed due to injury. He's a durable ass Russian.

The Russian Machine has missed 44 games in 17 seasons. And the google says only 24 of those are due to injury (whatever that means).

He has had a few suspensions and such. He took personal leave when his grandfather passed or was passing.

Otherwise he rarely ever misses due to injury. My theory? He's a caveman.

Barely flinches

I can't remember the last time a player has been so nonchalant after getting a puck in the mouth and losing a tooth. The guy is a beast.

Making me feel a little old. My first years really getting into hockey were when guys like Ovechkin were getting drafted, now he's got 800 goals lol. Incredible achievement -- on pace for a 50+ goal season at 37 years old. Seems like a foregone conclusion that he'll catch Gretzky.

Made even more incredible by how physical he plays.

Yeah, there's not going to be many guys out there who can match OV's power, accuracy and longevity. I thought early that Laine might be a guy, but obviously not. Matthews is the best shot now, I'd agree. OV is a phenomenal player. Really hoping he breaks the record!

Judging by his physique, he's not a PED guy.

He looks like a Russian villager.

Matthews started his career a year younger than Ovechkin and scored 40 goals in his rookie season

On the one hand, it gives Matthews 1 extra year to score more goals

On the other hand, Ovi was already past Matthews by the middle of his 2nd season so...

800 is A LOT of goals

I think no to the ped's also. But...you never can know or tell. Could have been on some ultra secret Russian vitamins his whole career which has helped him to be so injury free.

Anyway, doesn't matter anyway because he wouldn't be anywhere near the only one in the league to do things to get an advantage. I'm cynical, but I believe that most professional athletes will do almost anything to be better or keep their jobs.

800 is A LOT of goals
Matthews goal scoring has taken a hit because he misses games every year. When healthy he has shown he is a 50-60 goal guy.

Problem is you can't just be good, you need to stay healthy. 800 goals in 20 years and average 40 per. If you play less than 20 years it becomes very difficult especially if you miss 5-15 games a year.

Stamkos early on was on the same trajectory as AO. He's coming up way short even though he seems to have recovered and putting up big numbers again, he broke his leg and ruined any chance he had.

Others must be suspensions (missing all star games) and probably taking the last game or two off before playoffs.
