I know that this is the federal thread, but you all do know that provincial parties and federal parties are divorced in policy across the country, right? The only reason that they carry the same name is an antiquated notion that they can cross-pollinate their campaign resources during an election.
The BC Liberal Party went as far as to officially change their name for the next election, because they have nothing at all in common with their federal counterpart. IMO, the ANDP are idiots for not following suit.

I wonder if the conservatives threw this by-election to try to convince Trudeau to call a snap election. Looks like an extraordinary collapse of the conservatives in this 905 riding despite the favorable national polls.
Or maybe he is just running up the score in solid blue ridings while becoming uncompetitive in the swing ridings.

Is it too early to be calling this a collapse? I'm not paying attention to the results but it looks like it is only 30% reporting and an 800 vote lead.

The conservatives need ridings like this to form government. Harper won it by over 9 points in his majority. It was called for the Liberals before the first quarter of polls reported in.
Could move a lot when the bigger polls come in, but the Liberals won by 6 points in the last election, and are now up by over 20 points right now. If they keep their lead to 10+, this is a big loss for Poilievre. However- he didn't even step foot in the riding apparently.

In fact, Singh's move today seems like he knew this was coming , and an election call all but certain for 2023. Nothing more can be gained in propping up a government that doesn't really want the support any longer. So he is starting his federal election campaign right now, and basing it on healthcare reform.

I think it’s a reflection of the health situation in Ontario right now. Long emergency room waits with Doug Ford not offering solutions will lead to blowback against the federal party.

I don't think so. Doug Ford pals up more with Trudeau and Freeland than he does with Pierre.
Sousa was a former provincial cabinet minister so a much more familiar name than who the Conservatives ran. That is likely 90% of it.
I would also say that being pro-Convoy like the Conservatives/Pollivere flirted with is likely ultra toxic in Ontario and probably doomed them in virtually all non-rural seats - but that's probably projection on my behalf.

Worth noting that Sousa was defeated provincially by a PC candidate by like 13 points in a very similar riding - so its not like he's some kind of unstoppable force in Ontario.

It might just be that Pierre is incredibly irritating, and... well I think this says it best:
Voters might have caught on. I suspect these polls showing CPC gains are all in ridings they already control heavily.

We all enjoyed the conservative OJ scandal many years ago and it is being reported now that on a recent Governor's General trip to the Middle East they spent $1000 on lemon and lime wedges as a drink garnish on their private flights. This was during an 8 day trip between about 30 people.

With the Liberals in power, and the cost of food skyrocketing, this seems about right.
See, they really are common people like you and I , having to pay these outrageous food prices. Lol.

Has nothing to do with the Liberals. Liberal and Bloc MPs were the ones chastising the Governor Generals office and calling for transparency and tighter rules for catering (of which there now are according to Stewart Wheeler).
Helps to read the article before reacting, though I know that’s not as easy or as satisfying as just blaming the libs:

In this case it wasn’t politicians and I think it’s fair to be annoyed by 30 people spending $400+ per day on food.

Loose change, but it’s in our national character to get bent out of shape on this kind of stuff but accept larger structural deficiencies which actually impact our lives.

The catering bill for that trip to the Middle East was one small part of a $1.3 million trip. That's likely what has people upset. The Governor General is an, arguably, partisan, appointed ceremonial position that many feel the country could do without.

It's a big old "yeah but!" from gun advocates, who do not want to talk about places where gun restrictions have been successful.

I am happy to talk about places where gun restrictions have done a good job.
Like in Canada.
