Monahan's contract has a cap hit that is $$2.125M more than Toffoli's.
Kadri isn't part of the equation for them and frankly the $2.125M cap hit doesn't come close to covering Kadri's cap hit anyways.
They took advantage of a GM overpaying for Toffoli in the 1st trade and desperately trying to create cap space for a free agent signing on the 2nd one and made out like bandits.
Heck Toffoli's only got 3 more points than Monny this year, let alone the 2 1st rounders!!
Whether you consider it as 2 separate wins or 1 combined massive win it really doesn't matter, huge W for them either way.
Again if the Flames did that you'd all call it a massive win.
Anyways there's no point trying to drill this simple logic into you guys anymore so i'm gonna drop it.
Sometimes i think the Flames fan base and inept organization really do deserve each other.

"From Montreal's perspective"... yeah ok Monahan's contributions push the Habs further and further away from Bedard. So acquiring him could turn out to be a big L for them.
Also... the Flames have Toffoli AND Kadri... that's TWO players... vs Monahan who is just ONE player. Geddit? It's not that hard. That $2.125M difference is irrelevant here since Toffoli's cap hit has nothing to do with Monahan's. Toffoli has been well worth his cap hit and the draft pick traded to acquire him.

It doesn't look like Heineman is going to pan out.
Pitlick was terrible and the Flames had to offload him.
And yes the removal of Monahan's cap hit from the books is directly what allowed the Flames to sign Kadri. No trade, no Kadri. There's no way around it. The two are directly linked.
So no, there was no "fleecing" here. And for you to suggest that there was "cap mismanagement" beforehand is just as ludicrous. Have you seen the sweetheart deals of Elias Lindholm and Rasmus Andersson? (and others)

The other part of this is nobody can really predict what the cap is going to do in the next few years. It's looking very good to go up fast. NBA had this happening recently, MLB seems to be seeing massive increases in payrolls which is dramtically increasing player contracts. Teams that have guys locked up from past years with pre-arb stars are looking very good right now.
The Flames even with age probelms have guys locked in right now. Huberdeau's deal isn't looking great right now but when the cap goes up and guys start make more than $15 mil a year even if a guy like Kadri is older and Huberdeau will be over 30 soon these deals will still be good for a long time when the cap skyrockets.
It was smart for the Flames to lock some players up now. Even if this season is a disaster they will not be in a bad spot and adding a top 10 pick in thsi draft might make a poor season turn out ok. A lot of season left and more than likely this team is in the playoffs but the Wranglers look good and adding a top 10 pick this team is set up still very well. If people are worried about Kadri's age just watch Backlund play and ask if this guy has slowed down?

If Vladar and Markstrom keep up their good work of late they have a shot.
I think their defense is also good enough when healthy.
Forwards and the PP need to start finishing on a more regular basis. That will decide everything. 40 shots and 1 or 2 goals every game is mind boggling.

LOL, im talking about the team as a whole so far. People are just frustrated because the team hasnt lived up to expectations. Clearly should have specified that I guess.

And Hanifin, Backlund, Stone, Vladar....
Cap management is fine.

The bug that’s floating around out there (non Covid)is a nasty energy sucking leech too.
We’ve been battling with it for weeks in this house. Just won’t go away

Yeah I usually shake off these bugs pretty quickly but I'm on day 5 or 6 and still downing Neocitran. It's rotten out there.

Hope you get rid of it soon too
I guess the good news is if it is going through the team, these are élite athletes with access to the best of care
I doubt they spend an absurd amount of time eating bacon sandwiches drinking beer and watching hockey on tv (I’m guilty as charged)

This team will not make the playoffs. Something needs to be done.

If Markstrom plays like he did tonight for the rest of the season, they'll win the Cup lol
That borderline might have been the best game I have ever seen him play?

if Seattle keeps up their season its possible
effort level and smarts have taken a hit since last season and I can't figure out why since it's still a Sutter coached team
sometimes you have only one of the two also
high effort level but a lot of dumb undisciplined ****
then other games they defend well but refuse to go to the net so the goalie gets no run support
I'm hurting just to see a game where there are no ill times penalties against at a key moment .. feels like it's been weeks

On a side note. Man is Phillips small. He looks like a 12 year old out there.
Johnny was small. But Phillips is another level of small.

I tuned in halfway through. Thought they were playing well and competing. But saw the 1-0 score and knew it was just a matter of time until the Habs tied it.
I also knew if they tied it we weren’t winning. Scoring timely goals is not the Flames forte. OT is death for them since they are so slow.
It’s either win 4-2 or lose 2-1 or 3-2.

Maybe I’m too optimistic
But
Over the last 1/2 dozen games I’ve seen a lot of good signs. It’s not perfect by any measure but I’m feeling quite positive in the direction things seem to be going. Are things beginning to gel now?
If so, we could be in for a pretty exciting race to the playoffs coming up.

So you can take advantage of competing teams that are tight against the cap? News flash! Good for them and good for Monahan, but taking on Monahan was definitely a cap dump at the time the trade was made.
