Like I said earlier: Tkachuk didn’t want to stay so I don’t care if we lost the trade

Been a while since I posted. But if Huby doesn't get close to PPG by end of this season or if the Flames miss out. The lynch mob will come out for Huberdeau, any player making that type of money is expected to be a driver etc.

I really hope you're right but I just don't see it. Lots of excuses being made for Huby (new coach, new system, different linemates). At some point he needs to elevate his game. What drives me nuts is that his contract means he should be an elite player (yes, the raise starts next year) but to date he has shown very little.
This has the ability to cripple the team as $10 million dollar players have to be game breakers. It's just the reality of the salary cap and Sutter says it all the time "Our top players need to be our top players." Lots of people disagree and have mentioned that he doesn't have to be that type of player but I strongly disagree. Whether it's fair or not, the type of money being given means he needs to be on a different level.
We don't really have many options at this point except to ride it out. Would definitely be a pleasant surprise if in games 42-82 he turns it around but there has been nothing that I've seen so far to support that theory. I'm not talking about marginal gains but rather his ability to be one of the top point producers. Expectations are high and that can cause pressure for the player but it is what it is when you sign a contract of that magnitude.

8 points in his last 8 games and a +3. To me it seems like the signs are there of him beginning to turn things around. He's an easy target right now because of the penalty he took in OT, but I think he will continue to improve as the season progresses.
Having a skilled speedster on his line would help him quite a bit I think. Trying Mangiapane or Dube instead of Toffoli on the top line is probably worth giving a shot. Or, you know, that other skilled speedy guy...

According the Athletic
The proposal included Vladimir Tarasenko, Marco Scandella and a high draft pick

I really didn't like this trade when it went down. I know Tkachuk had to be traded, but a lot of people really down played how good of a player he is. I warmed up to the trade after the players were extended, but mainly because so many people called it a steal, I just figured I must be wrong. Seeing the early returns, I am back to not liking it.
Something about Huberdeau's playing style just bugs me. Even watching his Florida highlights, he would get a lot of points, but never really looked that impressive.
Honestly, if it were possible to trade him right now before his value plummets completely, Treliving should do it. That contract is going to be an anchor as early as next season, and will only get worse as he ages. There are probably teams where he can play without pressure like in Florida and rack up points, but I don't think it is going to happen here.

Yeah, people complain about the Huberdeau trade, look at what St Louis offered. Is Tarasenko better than Hubey? Who's gonna set up Tarasenko? I don't follow the Blues, but who is this Scanella guy? And a high draft pick? So a second?

Ya it's hard to be overwhelmed with Huberdeau's performance up til now. He definitely does not stand out when he is playing. Hope he can improve.

I wish we had a player as talented as Matthew Tkachuk. He’s the best winger in his age range in the league. Full 200 foot player.
I was way more disappointed to hear Chucky’s news than Gaudreau’s.

Yeah same. I was saying before the season ended that if it came down to keeping only one of them, I would take Tkachuk easily. He is one of the most fun and entertaining players to watch.

The Canes were the rumored 3rd team. The other two teams on the list (Lightning and one other I can't remember) had no cap space to make such a deal.
There's been zero rumors on what the Canes would have offered. Necas would have been amazing, but I doubt he was in there. But I struggle to piece together what their deal would have looked like.

Carolina tends to hang around the bargain bin. Their offer was probably putrid. Like Kotkaniemi and a 4th

For some reason, I thought I heard Nashville was one of the teams interested.
I think the trade we made was the best one available at the time, and possibly the best that would have been available, at least on paper. I didn't think it was going to be an automatic win on the ice though.
Still lots of time though, but I am losing optimism.
