Then why do the Flames play it all the time? I figured if it was played at hockey games all the time it had to be fine.

It is neither in their mandate nor in the power of Consulates to intervene. It's up to the Canadian citizen's own lawyer to advocate for serving their sentence in a Canadian jail, and it's entirely the sentencing government's choice if they want to allow it or not. Consular services will help with a list of recommended lawyers if requested and may provide advocacy in circumstances where someone's human rights are being violated, even though they don't have a legal obligation to do so either. Unless it's a special case, Canadians should expect that if they break the law overseas they have to deal with the consequences of the legal system in the host country.

I've dealt with a couple of federal (its pretty much always federal) inmates doing their offshore time in BC, they all seemed to have some consular help to allow it, they were from European countries though none from the states

FWIW when I was in Micronesia I met this guy from Atlanta who basically travels the globe non-stop for work, more than anyone I've ever met. And he takes his cannabis vape with him wherever he goes. He said he's entered North Korea with it, Singapore with it and no one ever checks it because this particular model looks innocuous. Not that I endorse what he does--it seems dumb to me--but the point is this guy who does several laps of the world every year has never been called up on his cannabis vape.
So it seems to me the Russians knew they had someone high profile in their grasp with Griner and no doubt put in extra checks to find something, anything to detain her. I'm sure it's a combination of her being extra dumb and the Russians being extra motivated.
Now we have this situation where a true monster has been set free as a result. Well played Russia.

I’ve seen it before, smuggle something once and get away with it and think you will always get away with it.
College athletes get treated with kid gloves, guess she figured it also applied in Russia.
Wish they would’ve traded the arms dealer for Ukrainian prisoners instead.

I really doubt that she was trying to pull a fast one. What she did was like if there was a country where alcohol was illegal and someone had some beer cans with remnants of beer left in them left in their bag from before they left. It was a big mistake.

Help with finding lawyers, providing some information, and facilitating communication with the Canadian government are all normal, but intervention to arrange extradition is definitely the exception even though extradition treaties exist in lots of countries. The rule is to respect the host country's sovereignty in their legal system.
Grimer's case is obviously one of the exceptions to the rule, on both the US and Russian sides, because of her public profile. If it happened to you or me, it wouldn't be the same.

How does she even have a public profile? Is women's basketball that popular that anybody even knew who TF she was? Plus she brought drugs into another country. I just can't get over how that outraged Americans so much, yet they'd punish anyone bringing drugs into their country, too. It's all so fataing stupid.

I have always wondered what kind of sway either her parents, family, heck even the team's owner have with the higher ups. Someone somewhere was pulling strings to make this happen.

I was surprised yesterday that Canada is currently 12th in the world on military spending, up from 13th last year. The way people talk, it's like Canada is cheap or something. I have no idea if that includes aid to Ukraine or not. Ukraine is currently 20th. Ukraine obviously doesn't have the wealth Canada has of course, so I assume their spending is proportionately a lot higher compared to their GDP.

Would be interesting to see spending as a ratio to the area of the country, or kilometers of coastline and national borders. Canada has an awfully large space to take of.

Yeah 12th in spending and 39th in population. Pretty decent if you ask me.
Edit: Also, if I'm the CAF, I'm looking at every dollar spent in Ukraine is a dollar that negatively impacts the Russian military that inhibits future encroachment/aggression in the Arctic.

Not that anyone cares - but the reason she is semi-famous is that she is 6'9 and was viewed as potentially changing the woman basketball game by being so tall and good. She would also dunk at times which is rare for woman's basketball.

You could say she is to women's basketball what Viktor Bout is to arms dealing.
