Stone cold handball in the box... hard to understand soccer pen rules. But but it was an accident or the ball traveled too far? Puzzling

I've played soccer my whole life, and I have no idea what is a handball anymore.

It's a Michael Oliver and Man U thing.

That's as bad a dive as you'll see. Oliver should have given a yellow for that..

Explain to me why FIFA can't come back and do a retro yellow for that ridiculous dive?

yes, it was offside.
But if it wasn't offside, ball coming down from behind over your shoulder as you're running, hits your hand, I mean your arms have to be somewhere, you can't run with your arms behind your back or to your sides, and you're not blocking a pass or a shot...
I think that's not handball.

Credit to Croatia showing heart and all, but....how is this any better than Spain? It's pretty much the same thing, nice control of midfield, but absolutely no incision to try and score.

That's exactly the problem with the current penalty/handball landscape. Trying to judge intent, all kinds of ifs and buts.
Man this game needs a goal so bad. 0-0 games and teams bunkering like this are exactly why my hockey only friends rip on the sport.

Playing this way is the only way Croatia has a chance. Not a bad bet to try to take it to penalties with their goalkeeper.

There's so much pressure on these games. I don't think Spain has an excuse, they have the talent but just choose a possession game. In this case of Croatia against Brazil, Croatia are just holding the ball to survive. I'm not sure they have any other choice because of skill level. They're not as good so going forward would just be suicide, especially early. You don't want the game to get out of hand like the Koreans did, although they weren't even skilled enough to hold the ball and survive.
Using an NFL analogy, you want to score with no time left. Goal #1 is to not let the game get blown out and Goal #2 is to sneak a later winner if possible. Otherwise it goes to penalties. Because there is a defined ending, teams can play for it. I wish soccer would go to indefinite overtime, then teams like Croatia would have to gamble at some point or else they'll just tire out.

Oh I know, and I expect the exact same from the Netherlands and Morocco in their matches. But it's why almost all finals and single game knockout matches are so poor now, high pressure + conservative tactics = zzzz.

I wouldn’t be against some rules to open up offense or make shootouts less likely. Maybe 10-10 or an extra OT period. I mean shootouts are marginally better in football than hockey but still a terrible way to decide a game.

And they want more knockout matches! Round of 32 in 2026!
Morocco for sure but I've never seen the Netherlands defend in my life.

I would start with another 30 minute period of extra time and make it golden goal. And add a 6th sub.

I would love to see extra time go down to 7v7 with a shortened field. Would be awesome. Never gonna happen though.
