Oh wow, you're my kind of watch collector. That blingy Seiko of yours made me laugh out loud in the most awesome way ever. That's a fun piece. Nice work...too cool.
I do want something more whimsical for funsies, but I'm not sure what yet.
Yes, this did start with a Seiko 5 for me. My 15-year-old son uses it as his daily driver now and it looks super cool on him, so it's his now.
My daughter (16) daily wears a white G-Shock that's huge on her skinny wrist, but it looks super cool IMO. I don't think she's taken it off since I bought it for her in June.

Whimsical for funsies? What type of feature in a watch would convey that to you?
Seiko Excelsior looks like some kind of metal sinew hybrid.

Citizen has a line of watches that are all Star Wars and comic book themed. Some are full blown eye catchers and others are super subtle.

Hilariously, I discovered that Seiko literally has a whimiscal wall clock. It's really fricken neat.

I’m perhaps a bit contrarian as I get great joy in finding good looking $20-100 watches. I have gotten plenty of comments about some pure quartz dime a dozen movement watches I have. I buy what I like, I don’t care it came from China.
The Hamiltons are great to me.
I’m also jonesing the Pluto Swatch. I just hate the loud Swatch TICK TICK.

I've got a hankering for the Sun Swatch. I dunno why, I just really like the look of that one. But I absolutely will not pay more than retail, and I am a patient man. Any idea when they might be widely available?

I like the seiko 5 streetwear with the orange dial a lot, but I've found with the seiko 5 as I've learned more with watches that the lug to lug is a little small on my wrist in spite of the large diameter of the dial.
I'm not entirely sure what I'll get for fun, so I'm enjoying knowing that I have a watch out there waiting to catch my eye.

Actually come to think of it, a moonswatch would fit the bill perfectly.

I have the Pluto Moonswatch, had a co-worker pick it up for me in Switzerland on a trip there. I really like the grey+scarlet & cream combo

They had the Sun at Metrotown when I bought Mars the other day.
I think theyre only supplying to certain cities unfortunately though & not Calgary.
You should be able to get it online very soon if not now.

I was 100% onboard for the Moonswatch when I first heard about it (I like the Mission to Mercury one). Always wanted a Speedmaster "moon watch" but can never justify spending that much on a wristwatch.
Anyway, once it was obvious these watches were going to be difficult to procure I looked for other options. I ended up ordering a V3 Pagani PD-1701 Speedmaster homage from China (AliExpress).

For $115 all in with shipping, I gotta say I am very happy with it. No, it doesn't say Omega on it, but it is good value for the money. Sapphire crystal, stainless steel case, ceramic bezel, Seiko movement. I'm looking at getting a few others in November during their 11/11 sale!

I was looking at a field watch review that featured the Seiko Prospex Alpinist I bought to commemorate a personal milestone and I discovered there's an interstaller watch made by Hamilton???
https://www.hamiltonwatch.com/en-ca/...E&gclsrc=aw.ds
https://thetruthaboutwatches.com/202...-watch-review/
The Alpinist was just delivered and I haven't have a chance to collect it and put it on my wrist yet and I'm already drooling over this Hamilton. I would totally chat about the movie if I got this watch. The last time I got nerdy excited about a watch was the 007 Aquaterra James bond Spectre watch and it wasn't this level of intrigue.
The Alpinist has a Fricken compass inside it though! I'm still pretty excited!
Edit: there's a Cooper watch too?
https://www.hamiltonwatch.com/en-ca/...date-auto.html
I didn't really think much about it with the steel bracelet, but with the leather strap, it has a little bit of the same aura as my JLC MCM and I quite like it
... Dammit.

Straight up, that movie got me into Hamilton. Their marketing worked perfectly. The Murph is really expensive for what is essentially a field watch (bit more elegant font). My 42mm field was something like $700. The 42mm Murph is $1300. That being said, it's still my plan for my daughter for grade 12 graduation next year since that's "our movie".

I'd argue it's a field watch that was fine tuned to be an more every day dress watch as well give minor aviation nods via the movie influence. I agree that the approximately $500 in premium is a bit high, but the watch was indeed well done. I'd argue that while the watch started heavily on a Hamilton field watch, I felt like the intentional improvement and subtle movie details were done to a significantly higher degree than something like the 007 James Bond Omegas. The morse code eureka on the Murph is nothing short of unnecessary awesomeness. The bond you share with your daughter for Interstellar though, that's priceless. I assume that's why you're not opposed to pay the premium for it to gift it to her.
I'd also go as far as to say that if the Murph ever got to the point it wasn't worth repairing, I'd personally frame it up into a shadow box, especially if you're going to be tying the acquisition of it to your daughter's milestone. It would look really damn cool to a random person and it would hold extra sentimental value for you and your daughter.
I feel like would never be able to do that with something like an Omega. I've been meaning to do this with an old relatively worthless automatic that my grandfather owned, but I never got around to it. He passed away when I was really young and we lived in different countries and rarely saw each other so the connection wasn't really there. It just seemed like something cool to do. Half the pieces were replaced due to the domed glass and second hand inexplicably falling off while hiking by the Nordic Centre years ago, but I feel like that history to the watch after his passing kinda matched the history I had with him. I kinda sat on the project because I didn't feel any specific urgency to do it other than the fact it was cool, but I'm now thinking to finish the project and present it to my dad as a small part of a retirement gift for when he retires.
On a sorta related but also a totally random note, if you get your daughter the Murph, that would be awesome. I saw that many complained about the size on the wrist, but I don't and hope that won't be an issue with your daughter. I met a female engineer once who openly complained that boys got the best toys. She was wearing an 38-40mm Kenneth Cole steel dress watch (Mens) which I complemented. She tried on my Orient Mako Diver (42mm) which I recall was a bit bigger and she commented about how she loved wearing large men watches, how others thought it was weird, but she did not give a damn because watches were awesome. I actually thought it was really damn cool. I think it'd be awesome if more ladies did that.

Not a watch guy but I thought you folks might find this interesting.
Rolex is starting to sell officially certified used watches
Quote:
Last week, the Swiss company launched a "Certified Pre-owned Programme" for watches that are at least three years old. High-flying customers can now purchase a second-hand Rolex through Bucherer, the brand's official retailer, in six European countries, according to a company press release.
Rolex has historically certified its products with a guarantee card and green seal. Now, certified pre-owned watches will be minted with the brand's official insignia as well.

Will be curious to see what their prices are like, considering a lot of their watches tend to be higher used than new.

Gives you an option for selling your watch at a premium price too. Depending the cut Rolex takes.

There's a new Birks opening in Chinook and its advertising Rolex on the drywall. Being in the mall, I hope they will be a less snobby AD experience too.
