I think lines won't change except 4th line will be Zohorna/Lewis/Phillips.

I truly hope Phillips can establish himself this season, would be a story for the ages.
It’ll be interesting to see if he can take the next step, having done well in juniors and the AHL. Hope it isn’t just a cup of coffee for a few games in the show. Otherwise, lets hope he is Martin St. Louis, rather than a Brad Moran (slightly taller), or somewhere in between for NHL success and games.

This sort of stuff has really derailed this thread. I wish we could just go back in time.

I have said for years that I believe he can be a Cam Atkinson type of player in the NHL. You don't need to be MSL/Gaudreau tier to be really useful to your team.

How could anyone mind Phillips on the 4th line. The alternative was probably never getting an NHL opportunity and moving to Europe at the end of the year.
It gives the 4th line a different kind of player. Right now this is probably the least effective 4th line this team has iced since the McGrattan-Westgarth days. The most productive thing it does is flip the puck out and go for a change. They are directly causing goals against with bad giveaways and getting hemmed in, even if it doesn't happen when they are on the ice they tilt the ice against us. This has been going on going back to the 7 game losing streak. If Phillips is this year's version of 2018 Mangiapane that's a win to me. If he's not effective who cares. Then welcome back Rooney or Zohorna or probably Walker Duehr.

He could be a Cam Atkinson, and that’s my hope, but he could have a career more like Guyle Fielder.

Yeah my guess is fourth line, but at least a rebuilt fourth line as Sutter seems to be fed up with his bottom unit of late.
If Zahorna is up with the team and playing I would assume it's Lewis and Lucic is a scratch. Lewis too key on the PK right now.
But that gives Phillips and Zahorna something to work with. Now it's up to them.
Flames are a very different team if it works to some degree.

Sutter having to choose between Lewis & Lucic? It'd be like him picking a favorite child. I say he goes with Ritchie. No one gets hurt.

Cam Atkinson has had seasons of 35 and 41 goals...I hope Mangiapane with a bigger contract can score like he Atkinson did at that age. If Phillips is Paul Byron lite..that will be found money.
I'm glad he's getting a shot, and hopefully it amounts to him being able to carve out a NHL career. Even a short term jolt of energy for this road trip might help this team claw its way back into things.

It's interesting that the Flames called up their two highest profile pending UFAs from the farm. I've seen some commentary that this is a callup for the future, but unless both sign extensions, it's a showcase for every other team in the league as well. May not be much of a futures callup and really is focused on getting the bottom of the lineup going. I think the futures players the Flames are waiting on are Zary, Pelleter, Corronato, Kuznetsov, Poirier, and Wolf. Would be nice for one of Zahorna or Phillips to step up, be a player and force the hand of the team to give them another contract.

I'm just really hoping Sutter gives Phillips a real shot. I don't want to see him play 7 minutes a game.

Honestly, the fact that he is even getting NHL games at this point is found money.

Every player has to start somewhere. Phillips's situation is not much different from Mangiapane's when he was a rookie, and he made the most of it, but it took time. I hope people are patient.

For sure. May as well see what you have.
But these AHL UFAs really don't have a huge amount of leverage unless they completely light it up on the recall ... in which case the Flames would be winners anyway.
Doesn't work ... likely out of the organization
Really works ... Flames will have to pony up
Moderate success ... potentially retain one or both

Does he though? I've heard from interviews with the coaching staff that he's great at getting into the tough areas and plays a fearless brand of hockey relative to his size.....all things this team needs a lot more of right now.
Maybe he's a puck carrier as well, but I wouldn't necessarily expect that to be a major strength of his.

Sounds like there won't be a Sutsie's Choice. Ritchie sits.
